I think the term came from a moron but I can't confirm it. I think character is a better description. This post was loving crafted by a member of the Official GoonWaffe recruitment team. |

It comes from the ancient greek word "kharaktun" which had the meaning of dress-up doll appealing to kids.
In latin it was later divided to "character" and "toon", which respectively denoted dolls for boys and dolls for girls.
I prefer avatar myself. It's from a movie by James Cameron, where people incarnate some 3D animated intelligent life-form.

The term is definitely pre wow. We used that term in everquest years ago. It is probably pre everquest too. Earlier MMOs often had cartoonish graphics. In everquest it was not unusual for the women in game (and yes there were actually real females who played the game) to pick their armor and equipment based upon the color coordination they had in mind for their "toon" instead of the statistics given by the piece of equipment "oh these pink boots go well with my wizard's robe!" |

I find it hilarious that your link to google (you obviously couldn't be bothered to "actually" google for the answer yourself) gets the top hit for this very thread. The others are also very speculative to the origins of the word Toon as well, meaning this isn't something you can just google and get a definitive answer for.
Being that Toon was definately not used "back in the day", its almost certainly something that has been imported from other games. Where it first started though, is anyone's guess. Post with your main, like a BOSS! |

Jill.
The term Avatar to describe a character controlled by someone else was around way before that movie, why do you think he called it "Avatar" in the first place?
Two of the defining characteristics of a carebear are wanting other players to play the way the carebear wants and whining on the forums for the game to change when they don't. Yet I see more threads on these forums from gankers than I do miners whining about wanting the game changed to suit them. |

I disagree, a cartoon is just the media used to portray a story. The content of the story is what determines the target audience.
Try showing a cartoon version of The Human Centipede in between episodes of Tom and Jerry and see what happens. It's so much fun watching the "serious" players getting their pixels in a bunch over people using "toon" that many people use it as a taunt, as well. http://www.mud.co.uk/richard/hcds.htm Richard Bartle: Players who suit MUDs |

Hah mid 90s, lucky guess on my part!
Oh, and yes, we used "toon" in Everquest quite often. We also used "alt" and "twink", since not everything was untradeable like in WoW, we would use our "mains" (hardcore raiding groups) and the "crap" tradeable items, or very expensive items that were overpowered, we would trade to a lesser skilled/leveled "alt/twink" to pimp out.
Easiest reference for example would be if you had a miner/industry main pilot and decided to outfit a blingy machariel to a pvp pilot who didn't really have the skills to afford to mission run his way to get one himself.
Or faction fitting a smaller cruiser or frig etc, you get the idea. "I say tomato, you say tomaCCP BAN ALL TOMATOES THEY ARE HARASSING ME I WANT TOMATO FREE HIGHSEC."-á -TheGunslinger42 Proud enforcer of the Code, see http://www.minerbumping.com-á for details. |

Actually the word "char" is just ridiculous and sounds ********, and that's why nobody uses it. Character is too long and cumbersome, hence "toon".
And it's misleading, if I claim to sell my char the first question I get is if I was talking about my toon or a charon. There's nothing a million chinese guys can't do cheaper. |
