Where did the EvE Term "Toon", short for character, come from? I see a lot of people don't like it. Yarr |

I believe it became popular with WoW, its cartoony graphics might have had something to do with it.
For the sophisticated gentlemen here, those who braved the MMO market before WoW, the term char (short for character) seems much more familiar, appropriate and, as some might claim, less gay. |

People say that, but I had never heard of it until WoW became popular. I played UO back in the stone age, and everyone just said "char" - same with Diablo. Had friends who played EQ, didn't appeal to me, but they still said "char" when talking about it.
So I think WoW did it with the cartoony graphics, and people just like to say that it wasn't WoW, because they say "toon," but hate WoW. |

It is a 4-letter word and therefore quick to type. If players had found a 3-letter word then they would be using it instead. I prefer "char", but I often spell it out. Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling. |

Actually the word "char" is just ridiculous and sounds ********, and that's why nobody uses it. Character is too long and cumbersome, hence "toon".

WAAAY before WoW. WoW was not the birth of MMO's. Hell the people who helped design WoW were badass avid Everquest Guild Leaders for a number of years before being leeched to Blizzard =).
I do believe Toon came from around Baldur's Gate time if I remember correctly. Maybe around the original Neverwinter Nights but I think that was too soon.
Atleast, that was when I started using it; early/mid 1990s I believe. Before "avatar" became popular (chat forum/virtual chat program name). The term comes from the early days of online play and the limited graphics at that time. Doom was before the Internet, and the graphics were cartoon-like compared to what we have today....Hence..Toons.
The single biggest danger to EVE is the proliferation of ALTS! Kill an alt today!

Hi,
I've been here since the beginning of EvE when mains and alts in EvE were still just called 'chars'. There was no term such as 'toon' in the early days of EvE, the 'chars' were not even distinguished into mains and alts in the general talks about and in eve back in those days.
The first time I ever heard the term 'toon' used in conjunction with eve's 'chars' was when a rather big influx of Earth and Beyond refugees arrived in EvE when that game was announce to become abandoned. Those refugees banded in rather large groups of unskilled pilots in EvE (I believe to recall them being called CLS, THEMM and the likes)
This banding together as low skilled players should have happened even before the Goon movement coming from Something Aweful.
The term 'toon' got to to be as widespread and accepted within EvE when a second influx of players appeared from StarWars Galaxies, bringing with them their terminology for characters to play with.
Hope it helps. Libertina Vice Admiral Support, Training And Resources Interstellar Services Department |

I'm a former Earth & Beyond player (SWG too for that matter) and i can confirm that we referred to player avatars as "toons" in both games.

The term toon was popularized sometime after Ultima Online and probably some time during WoW.
In the WoW beta test I don't remember people using the term toon though.. so it may have gone mainstream after WoW started up fully. I didn't play a lot of Everquest although I had friends who did but they never used the term toon. So my guess is that it crossed over into common vernacular in WoW.
It may have come from another MMO and just grew in the WoW environment or maybe someone just thought it was an easy way to refer to their characters.
EVE's community has always been fairly resistant to the term 'toon' and there's a pretty quick and strong negative reaction any time someone uses it so it's use in the game been limited which I like.. since I never liked the term toon.

It was used rather extensively in The Realm (1996), so it predates UO as well. Of course, in the case of The Realm, the term is rather appropriate. Vote Malcanis for CSM8. |

Nightcrawler 85 is correct. The term was first coined in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It was in use in the early 90's on social gaming networks such as Sierra Online.
Also, nice to see an Earth and Beyond fan here. I worked in support for that game.
Oh, and not to nitpick with a previous poster, but Doom was not around before the internet. It was around before the web. We were playing Tradewars 2000 on ascii BBS systems long before Mozaic and the first web protocols. |

Alt. There, was that so hard? Apparently booking your flight & accomodation to Iceland BEFORE you buy the tickets for the convention which is pretty much the only reason you wanted to go there in the first place is popular. |
