Edited by: Denrace on 29/08/2005 01:00:03 Hey there!
I make sigs, and so do a lot of EVE players here so now heres something fun to do:
This thread will be purely for the benefit of sig makers, helping them to learn how to improve their skills and to learn from others. I am going to aim for a STICKY here, as this will be an educational thread helping all sig makers. I will try put some fun events on here and some nice competitions, with some nice prizes too
The 1st Stage will involve you sig makers making a sig out of some pictures found by me (the winner will then choose the 2nd Stage pictures, and so on...)
Here are the images you MUST use:
Image One
Image Two
Image Three
Feel free to edit these images in any way/shape/form, colours, size whatever... BUT YOU MUST USE AT LEAST PART OF THEM ALL!! This is why its a challenge
Other than that - feel free to use any other images or other brushes you want in the sig making process.
Focal point MUST be the fancy CELESTIS cruiser shown in the above image (i.e, cut it out and USE IT). As for the tech palette in IMAGE THREE, you must use that tech only, no other tech brushes are allowed.
If you need help, or would like any suggestions, please feel free to ask here - this is where sig makers come to have FUN!
SO GET MAKING NOW!! YOU HAVE 5 DAYS!!
>>>>>> 20 Mill ISK prize to the winning sig >>>>> 10 Mill to most original design
[Any donations to the prize fund are very welcome]
Winners will be chosen by me. I will do some designs and submit them here, but I will not choose my own to win, they will be for helpful hints only. The winner will choose the second stage pictures to use and the winner will judge the next competition too.
1st Stage Competition finishes September 2nd at 20:00 EVE Time
GET GOING!!

Edited by: Blatent Alt on 28/08/2005 21:43:44 Interesting idea, and I think I might join in. But I have a few problems with it.
Those 2 renders, will never really look that good together.. imo it should be that we have to choose one of those renders, and try to use the tech brushes (though again the choice doesn't work very well imo)
Change the tech and only require one render and I would imagine that the sigs would be a lot better.
(btw thats a serpentis ship not a normal celestis, not that it matters if its desaturated anyway but whatever.)
*sorry for this being an alt btw, damn forums :/* --------------- ------ ---

Nice, but technically disqualified as you can't use it as a sig. (too big in dimension and file size)

Vanamonde, thanks for the info, i know it is technically too big, but I always preview my sigs at full quality and size. It wasnt intended to be used as sig anyway
Now - lets start seeing some more sigs from other people! If you cant make them, SO WHAT! Make one anyway. Use good ole' Paint if you have to (*nods to Mr. Floppyknickers*), or draw one on your monitor with your own blood
Get the creative juices going!

Shanzem I suggest you make your own thread in these forums to get a sig made. More people will respond to it there and you won't be hijacking this thread .
Denrace nice looking sig, but where did you put the second image? I thought we had to incorporate both ships as well as at least 1 symbol from the 3rd. -----------------------------------------------

Edited by: Denrace on 29/08/2005 00:57:17 Symbol from the 3rd Image is at the FAR LEFT (the weird black looking tripod).
As for the 2nd Image, its there.
> Its the background image, with the colours inverted and the opacity (or visibility) lowered to around 13%.
I can send you the master .psd file if you dont believe me
As for Mr. Shanzem - start your own Thread and make a sig competition to make one specifically for you.
My own Sig Request List is over 30 people long currently
A chunk of ISK may get you bumped to the top though

Edited by: Kedo on 29/08/2005 01:19:04 Why not just make it 0% opacity . . . it will still be there . Yea I thought it might be in there but it sure don look like a ship more like a texture layer on the background -----------------------------------------------

The images must be used: but i didnt specify HOW
Use/edit/transform them anyway you see fit, it also helps to post how you made the sig, in order to help other people improve their sig making skills. I will post a detailed guide on how I make some of my siggies very soon

Edit: Nice sig btw...forgot to say that...also if u dont mind revealing..what font did u use on that sig? ("Sig Competition") I got a decent sig ready but it needs a "eve" like font and yours is the closest I could find.

The font I used is this one:
Linkage to Font Download
As for the tech, just use whatever tech you like, seems a little limiting to have only a small sample.
Remember, simple is better and use the colours effectively. Green and whites go nicely!
Don't be afraid to use different filters on photoshop, SPONGE and CUTOUT are very nice for a cartoony/anime feel.
Similarly you can bring out the edges of certain images by:
1) Duplicate the layer, name it "Edges" 2) Apply the "Find Edges" filter 3) Invert the colours of the new layer 4) Set it to Overlay/Soft Light or just lower the Opacity
This is quite a nice effect to use on sigs when done right.
Please post your ideas here too!

Another thing I like to do is bevel and emboss. It gives a 3 dimensional feeling to whatever it is applied to, making it stick up so to speak. On my signature for example the border is bevel embossed and so is the background hence why it looks like it is sticking up. I have a relatively high lvl of bevel and emboss on the background in my sig but even a small one has a nice effect. -----------------------------------------------

Edited by: Finraer on 29/08/2005 17:28:54 Hmm, slightly lacking in high-powered graphics tools here so the following was done using Paint, Microsoft Image Editor (came with Office) and Powerpoint to put it all together.
Not ever going to win but wanted to show what was possible without shiny tools to edit with (and yes, I know the font is crap *grin*).

With a bit of experimenting I came up with this.
Oh, and how do you make your signatures not to be completely rectangular (like all I've made) and more like Kedo's.
Always wondered how to do that but never quite figured it out

Edited by: Denrace on 29/08/2005 21:11:56 TUTORIAL ON ROUNDED CORNERS - For Adobe Photoshop
STEP 1:
Open your document of 400x80 and make a quick image. Here's mine:
PHASE ONE
STEP 2:
Merge all layers together and then create a new layer above your base image called "Round Edges". In this layer create a rounded rectangle (using the "Shape" tool) and position it just slightly inside your back image as shown here:
PHASE TWO
Stage 3:
Make sure the rounded rectangle area is selected (CTRL+Click on it in the "Layers" tab) and then click the Back Image layer (just click it, dont select anything from it). Now press CTRL+SHIFT+I to Select the Inverse of it. Then just hit DELETE. This deletes all your back image outside the area of the rounded rectangle, giving you nice rounded edges
PHASE THREE
Congrats! You've just made some neat rounded edges on your sig! How cool was that, eh?
Here is a comparison:

Start out with a rectangular shape. Make whatever type of shape you want and the parts which u dont want to show make them transparent.
So Kedo's sig is infact rectangular, but the stuff outside the trapezoid is just transparent pixels.
Hope I've made sense.

Devil really nice but you spelled his name wrong hehe. If you are planning on putting a stroke outside border might I suggest 2 things that will spice it up from just being a plain border. First is to do a gradient overlay of it, grey to black or white to black will make it multi colors or any other combo you see fit. Second is bevel and emboss it, which will make it stick up like it is a 3d border, it adds alot of depth to the signature. Now if you just put a stroke to the signature and hit bevel and emboss it will do the entire sig, because the stroke is part of the sig, you have to get it to be its own layer, Denrace might know a quick way to do that, I usually start my sigs and all my templates all do this:
1) Draw the shape of the sig (the border) using lines/squares/circles/rounded corner squares. On the top the one setting lets all drawn shapes be thier own layer I do this so it is easy to move thing around.
2) Then after you have the design merge all the layers, delete any edges or pieces of a line you used to get an edge that extend beyond the sig and apply a style to it. I save many styles I make so its easy to bring em back, usually consists of bevel/emboss, a drop shadow of 1-3 pixels, and a gradient overlay to give it some color.
3) So now you have the entire outside border done, left with transparent pixels on the inside of the sig and outside its time to add a background. Put one on, put it behind the border layer and use Denrace's method to trim it so the background now ends up being inside the actual borders and all overlap is gone.
4) Now if you are cropping an image or avatar to use cut it out by hand I generally suggest as magic eraser can get pretty ugly unless the background color and whatever is being cropped are exremely different shades. Resize it, put it where you want on your sig.
5) Add any fonts you want again I suggest you do a gradient overlay/bevel, emboss it to get it looking like a piece of art. Just play around with blending till you find something good.
6) With the sig done, save it as a gif or png not jpg if you want the sig not to be square (to have transparency). If you want a perfectly square sig then save it as jpg as the quality is better then the others.
7) NOT done yet, if the sig is not square and was saved as a gif or png we have to look for any outside small errors that might show up. The quickest way to test this is open the GIF up, add a layer of black to the background or white if theres black fuzz and manaully use the eraser to delete it, the background will let you easily spot the errors. Then do a final save and your al set to go.
