Originally by: DigitalCommunist Good post. Usually the people asking for such things as quick advancement are probably not in a position to comment on the game, period. People like that are generally used to the grinding and leveling treadmill that exists in other games where bigger numbers = win, hands down. Sure, there are 30-40mil+ skillpoint players but half of them are lab rats who can't even shoot a gun.
Its true about the specialization bit. I got away relatively easy because I trained only Caldari and Gallente. Did most of my pvp in Caldari ships for the first year. There was no such thing as armor tanking, and shield tanking with relays and hardeners with no stack penalty was insane. And early on I decided to specialize.
You'd be surprised how many of the "old school" m0o players or other well known pvpers have garbage skillpoint layouts. Like.. battleship 5 in three races but no tech 2 guns? Early on in the game, Tachyons beat any other battleship gun hands down.. even at 4200+ grid and 90 cap per shot. Hence I now have small medium and large energy turrets trained to 4 and I don't fly Amarr ships. Then it happened with projectiles, when 2x1400mm 6x heavy arb was the "hot" setup on a raven. Now I have small medium large projectile skills trained to 4. I haven't fired a large projectile on this character ever.
I used to get by on EW lvl 1, and torps lvl 3 like the rest of EVE, now that things got specialized I won't see any use out of my Caldari skills for a very long time, if ever. Also found out the Caldari/Gallente combination of pirate ships is the Mordu's Legion which have none available to players. The only thing that matches with Gallente is Minmatar, and as I type this I've just completed Minmatar Cruiser lvl 1. So if I want to even use my hybrid specialization to its fullest I need a Vindicator, and yet another 1mil skillpoints invested.
Then frigs started being viable in pvp around Castor, and more recently cruisers in Cold War, which makes having big bship skills trained up relatively moot as they're no longer guarantee a victory.
Also, no such thing as advanced learning for a long long time (or any implants above basic available readily). Skills that used to take me eight goddamn days now take me three and a half. People complain that starting fresh means no pvp for a year.. wtf? Vigil + mwd + scrambler = 5 days. About how long it takes just to figure out what half the UI does.
Then theres the fact that skillpoints mean absolutely nothing in larger fights, and even if you're fully specialized in tech 2 frigs or HAC, a tech 1 cruiser or tech 1 battleship with the right setup will totally molest you.
People need to get a clue, and play the game. All that time spent whining could have been used in perfecting your tactics.
