As they are currently, drones are basically free guns that don't use cap, ammo or any fitting requirements on the players ship and when deployed in large groups are devestating to any class of ship. They are also a largely no brainer weapon, drop and attack, essentially forget about them since the only real problems with them stem from bugs.
I've thought about it alot recently and really can't decide if how they are right now is fine or whether they should be developed into a full on weapon system like turrets and missiles that requires dedicated loadouts like any other ship.
So I'm asking how do you feel about them?
Ideas for developing them into a dedicated weapon system...
Nerf drones current stats ALOT so you can launch them and target close objects but not much else.
Add new high slot modules that... - Increase the fire power of a given size of drone - Increase the speed of drones - Improve yeilds of mining drones
Add new midslot modules that when active... - Repair drones hull and armour when in the cargo bay - Recharge the drones shields when in the cargo bay (they may already do this now, I'm not sure tbh). - Increase the range drones can be set to attack a target
Add new low slot modules that... - Allow advanced commands to drones such as "protect target", "return and repair" and so on. - Increase the size of the drone bay (alot like current cargo expanders) - Increase drone shields, armour and hull hit points - Increase number of drones that can be controlled
With the above arrangement a drone user has the ability to customise their swarm to a limited degree by enhancing the size, speed and/or strength of their drone fleet basically making drones a weapon class in it's own right rather than just supplimentary firepower.
Would you consider this a fair trade or would it be too heavy a nerf on other ships?

Drones are not overpowered at all. Honestly they arent. Gimme one ship apart from the dominix that can really use them effectively?? And whats wrong with just kicking em out the drone bay, saying attack X and having em go and do it?
What would be cool are 1) webbing drones 2) target painting drones 3) warp scrambling drones and 4) a "repair bay", prob a low slot BS module that you could fit to repair drones while they are docked.
and if you nerf drones then make people fit modules to use em the ship they are launched from is going to be so weak in defence and offence it will be like comitting suicide.

Overpowered?
I would hardly say that. When I see a ship spit out a crapload of drones I don't fear anything but the lag they cause.
Unless I'm in a frig I just let them come and do their damage while I rip the launching ship apart. A domi full of heavies is about the only drone ship I avoid in anything less than a BS, but I'll happily take on a rax with my cruiser or BS, heavies or not.

This is true, I guess as a frig pilot I see drones as a bigger threat than other pilots would and this would be a heavy influence on my post above.

Blah balh blah ... nerf the drones..
NO ! Drones do not need modules, they are a different type of weapon, that don't need modules to work. That's the whole point of drones, I don't want another kind of turret.
And please, DO NOT nerf drones, as they already underloved as it is right now.
And NO, drone are not free guns that don't use cap, they are 70k $ guns that you lose often in combat and are a pain to replace, to manage, and to get them to remotlely obey orders.
Again, NO, I don't want my Dominix to become a big useless brown mass of... |

The frigate pilots have had every ship in the game nerfed to make them stronger. Now drone need to be nerfed for them better to. Why not say what your really want, for frigates to replace all other ship classes.

*sighs* Actually my thoughts with these modules was to make drones alot more powerful than they are now, it just requires some dedicated setups to get that extra punch from them.
No I do NOT want drones nerfed, I don't like them certainly since I get them used against me alot, but in general I don't like guns, missiles or anything else that can blow me up, doesn't mean I want them nerfed.
Idea for the modules was not that you had to fit all of them to be effective but rather balance them up with tanking modules or whatever to make them a fully independant means to kill your enemies.
But nvm, think im getting a good idea of how people feel about em

The problem is if drones get played with they will either..
1) nerf the launching ship if the launching ship needs modules to make them effective. The launching ship needs to be tanked to hell and back to let its drones do the business while it sucks up the pain.
2) if they get to much love then they will make the drone carrier (eg dom) the ultimate bs.
So leave em as they are but lets get the bugs out and maybe introduce some variety?

What I'd really like is a 'Collector Drone', with something like a shuttle sized Cargo Bay. You could target a Can and send it off to empty it, mainly of loot. Instead of 'Attack' or 'Mine' as a drone order, you have 'Collect'....

problem with nerfing drones as you suggested above means that the dedicated drone ships get badly nerfed in their DPS. I can understand lowering the dronebays of non-drone dedicated ships, and possibly introducing some of the modules you mentioned, but those modules should be liike the cloak and gang modules, requiring specific ships to mount them properly (i.e. change the domi 1st bonus from damage to cpu/grid reduction on those mods).
The other problem with drones atm is the costs involved. at around 1.5-2mil a pop for t2 drones, they are an expensive ammo that can be: a) destroyed quite easily and in large numbers by a single large smartbomb b) left behind when fleeing a fight c) run away from quite easily -----------

If all ships are given significant dronebays, why not. For example, the Deimos is one of the best ships in the game on it's own, and gets 100m¦ dronebay (which gives it access to all 4 damage types, btw), while a Cerberus or Eagle has no dronebay at all.
Otherwise, a boost for drones would be a boost to Gallente which already have amongst the best ships in the game.

BINGO!!! I've now seen all four races accused of being far too weak, and all four races accused of being far too strong. __________________________________________ I tried strip mining, but I lost; and it's cold flying around in space naked. |

I like drones but people are already complaining that they are too powerful in some cases. So any drone enhancements would have carefully balanced. Truth is drones are just fine as is.
Drones are good. But they arenÆt some uber weapon that needs to be nerfed. There are a whole lot of ways to counter them. (IÆm sure frigate pilots do have a problem with being swarmed by a bunch of relatively cheap small targets that their guns have trouble hittingà ThereÆs a certain irony here.)
Eve sure doesnÆt need any more skills to train right now and I wouldnÆt want to see any more added.
I like some of your ideas particularly the mid slot drone repair module Drone shields repair on their own and it seems like they repair really quickly in the drone bay. IÆve been using a high slot remote armor repairer for the armor but thereÆs nothing that repairs hull. The module shouldnÆt work very fast either (perhaps 5 minutes to fully repair a drone) so it would be more of a logistics tool than a tactical tool.
A low slot 25m3 bonus dronebay would be nice too I think. Just about any ship could still be turned into a drone carrier if they were willing to sacrifice a few low slots to do it. Dedicated drone ships (Dominix, etc.) would still have an advantage in the number of drones they could control so they wouldnÆt be made obsolete. Maybe that would stop some of the ôNerf the Thoraxö complaints too.
Collector drones that fetch loot cans. Great idea Marcus. ItÆs so good that they should have put them in the game yesterday.

I really hate the idea of scrambling and webbing drones, you'd be webbed AND scrambled from quite a distance and had no means of escaping other than to fit a ****load of stabs. As it stands now, the stock scramblers can scramble you from 20km and webbers web from 10km. Imagine warping to your enemy that just had drones out to scramble you from 40km out.
Also, that addition would make a domi the killer of frig fleets, just think of >10 webbing drones and medium sized guns on that thing..
Ok, this feature might not ever see the light of day but it really scares me as a frig pilot.
