I'm 28 now gettin old .
Back in my day if you where a gamer you where nerd. At the very minimum an unusual individual. I remember playing a game to finish whas actually hard, and sometimes near damn impossible.
These days everyone plays 'games'. With highest player numbers on games like angry bird or farmville ... One of those more challenging games out there for the mass i'm sure :-p.
So why the skyrim generation?
Well Skyrim is still today heralded as one of those epic games. Though pretty good game no doubts. But overal, i call it 'morrowind for special needs kids'. Oblivion whas a little in between.
I realize i'm going to get allot fanboy crap about this but then ... given that those people failed to read/understand the post i'm going to have to send said posters on their merry way with a nice shoulder pat and direct them to the angrybirds booth.
Another thing i noticed whas how humanity takes credit for the few's creativity. It's like how people don't seem to realize what college is for ... it's something invented to make dumb people do smart peoples jobs. Yeah i said it. I've been there, i know. One can hardly consider itself one of the contributing group if all your information has to be given to you by other people.
A few question i'm hoping to get answers to from random people:
Anyone also fear this may just get worse and worse and the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?
Has the dumbing down process has begun?
Also do you think eve needs a dumbing down?
What effect would it have on you if it would be? |

Never played Skyrim, but recently I started Oblivion again. I like the voice acting, especially Khajiit and Argonians sound awesome. And the dark brotherhood questline is still the best thing this game has to offer. Please don't feed me. |

you have not playe skyrim untill you played it on a pc and modded and that goes exactly for oblivion and morrowind aswell and because the game can be so heavily modded to your needs it will stay one of the best games of the last 5 years and pretty much deserved and that is because of the fans not bethesda ( needless to say you wouldn't even recognize my skyrim anymore ) back to your question
maybe your use of skyrim generation is wrong , a better word would be console generation
the need for instant gratification and the need to win in society is what i blame

Last year when I was at my parents house for Christmas I dusted off my old PS one to play same games with my older brother. My 15 year old nephew (who is just as compulsive a gamer as we were at that age) tried some of the old games and after 10-15 minutes came to my brother and said:
"Dad... this is too hard." "Put it on easy then." "It IS on easy. Its too hard"
So yes... from this example you could say the quality is sliding. He also hates FPS games as older gamers have honed their skills and got banned from CS for hacks. I know this because his laptop got a virus and I had to fix it and found them. I formatted the drive to teach him a lesson.
That said, there's the other side of the coin. I know one lad who plays EVE who is still in secondary school and talking to him you'd think he was 30. He's erudite, well thinking and doesnt complain about plotting long term goals. Likewise I know one guy from work is just as bad as the 13 year olds on Xbox Live. I went over to his house to play some gears of war and every second word was pretty harsh.
I've met a few eve players in their 30s / 40s who are "mature adults" who act out like little babies if they cannot get their instant gratification. A couple of years ago I used to play WoW with some guys who also played eve. I wont name names of these people but they were "hardcore pvpers" in eve. And you should have heard the complaining on comms if their roams had come up fruitless and they would just go on and on and on....
So long story short. No, dont dumb down EVE. But age isnt a factor in complaining about games getting easier. There's plenty of adults who act like kids and plenty of kids who act like adults. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --įKenneth O'Hara

You know you make a good point i think i do mean the console stuff in disc and play generation.
I did play on pc. And pointing towards mods sort of backs up what i'm saying. It may have not kept me intrested long enough to get me to put on mods. After a certain amount of slashing and do have to say some nice cinematics it sort of just ... i went back to eve :-p
But yes you're right i do mean the console generation. |

well if you do start modding have a look at the nexus and like another poster sais start small with small mods that enchances the overal feel of the game plus there are plenty of tool s that help you to sort out your mods and make them work even better with minmal performance loss or CTDs you will not be sorry i m runnung 150 +¦ods with little or no prblems and tht is not including all the individual amor and cloting mods
this dumbing down as been going on for a long time now and lettle we can do about it , thank whoever is up there that there are still plenty of smaller independent developers and publishers who can still bring quality games on the market that are a challenge I do not agree with what you are saying , but i will defend to the death your right to say it...... I think my first "people are stupid" quote on a forum was back in 2001. And the situation is basically the same today.
But it would be too easy to just call other people stupid. In fact they are not, they have just been let down, and influenced by a ****** system that rewards inane things and triviality. People have in essence been blinded by greed, and greed has made our values and society worse.
And it is our fault. Me, you and the rest of us. We are at the helm now, and if we see stuff we do not like it is our fault. |

That's true, not that i know what to do about it other then to raise my son and possible future children diffrent.
I really like your way of thinking but even you can't deny that the majority doesn'l think that way. I mean pointing fingers happens too fast (it's always someone else's fault). As i say it i'm doing it. I'm aware of it.
But i dunno voicing my opinion is perhaps a useless attempt to swing some things in another direction. At the minimum it's a start. |

Indeed, one got to start somewhere, and its not an easy problem to tackle.
For the sake of gaming, I see great promise in things like the guys behind say Torment: Tides of Numenera, they say they want a deep rich story, and they want to make a game they like to play, no pandering to the "mass market" or "monetization" of the players, just what they want to make, and that happens to be a story rich CRPG.
The same goes for games like AI War: Fleet Command, Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, LIMBO, FTL: Faster Than Light, Braid, Primordia, Endless Space etc (to name a few) and other smaller "indie" games. Some with new creative mechanics, and some with deep rich story telling (not always by the way of words) and some just hard and fun designed to be a challenge. With the exception of Minecraft these games tend to have only a small audience, but for that particular audience they may be the best games in the world since they do not really focus on the lowest common denominator.
So there actually exists quite a few interesting games, but they can be hard to find among the myriad of crappy games and dumbed down AAA games.
And that is just for games, for society in general... there are some new emerging groups that aim to try and shift things towards a better way. Still small, but growing. And maybe it is just my imagination, but it seems to me more people are becoming more vocal against all the crap in society in general, so there seems to be growing dissent. Guess the thread will be locked if I keep on going down this road...
Regardless, open discussion, being vocal and trying to involve yourself is the only way to get what one would like to see. we affect each other, and if we can convey a better way of doing things, rather than just point a finger and say it is bad, that is one small step at least.

Games have been watered down because "easier" games have more appeal to the mass market than "harder" ones. For most developers, and by devs I mean those that work for people like EA and Activision, it's now all about how much money you can screw out of the consumer, initially for the game and then for the DLC that should have been part of the game in the first place. They've purposefully made the experience shallower with less challenge and rewards that are easier to obtain, so that people get bored, go out and purchase another game, ad infinitum.
In short games that are hard to beat hold the players attention longer and thus are less profitable than constantly churning out pretty games with less challenge. It's all about profit and less about quality, much like every other industry in the world.
I prefer games that are a challenge, I'd much rather play the original MoH and Wolfenstein games, than any of the newer FPSs that are on the market today, despite the dated graphics, purely because they are a challenge to beat. The same goes for pretty much any game produced in the 80's, 90's and early 00's.

Definitely a negative trend, and in general it is a combination of console-itus and publisher focus on graphics over gameplay that is to blame. Game developers no longer depend on gamers' imaginations and younger gamers and movie-goers seem to have much less imagination. |

I had ADHD and was pretty unmotivated about life for reasons that exist beyond being a teenager that I won't go into. I was pretty obsessed with spaceships and wanted instant gratification, hyperactive and the like. Also poor at maths now I think about it.
Then I saw a friends older brother with this spaceship game called "Eve", mining in a condor on the day after the Boxing Day Tsunami in 04. One family pester later, I was in the game and took the name of a side Charecters from a Phillip Pullman book. I got my arse handed to me pretty swiftly, but kept at it.
I will say this, Eve has been a brilliant educator because of its approach to it. It exists as an open laboratory to be disected and analysed which kept me at it, I was picking up mathematics from corpmates and later on leapfrogging my classes. I put this down to a school system that doesn't engage with people, learn an abstract theory then apply it later, wheras I need the damn situation in front of me to relate back to the theory, Eve provided me with ample data to analyse for Mathematics, Business, English and Physics.
I now plan years in advance, study Engineering and judge games relative to how much of a ride they give you. Starcraft 2 and Mass effect 3 have the right approach as single player experiences, you paid for the content so there's a easy easy mode to get the story you paid for, and a Brutal difficulty for people who want a challenge.
Not quite sure when my response turned into what it did, but thankyou CCP.
