Look at it this way, if it pumps out enough lava to warm up the waters, Iceland could become the "Hawaii of the north". would definetly do a huge number for icelandic tourism, (maybe even encourage the building of larger venues for conventions so we can start getting more people to fanfest) |

Confirmed: Gates of Hell opening; fallen angels and damned souls attending FanFest.
nb: Krakatoa generally has two explosions: The smaller one reduces the cone to sea level. The bigger one hits when high tide floods the caldera and there's a titanic steam explosion. Judging from the map, the odds of that happening with Hekla are nil, especially since Hekla has a regular and frequent (constant, as far as a geologist would measure it) eruption cycle.
Also, Mt. Rainier in Washington State is especially terrifying because it has no structural integrity. If it erupts, there will be almost no warning. A huge wall of boiling mud will erupt from the same side of the mountain that it always does, and fill the same cone-shaped area that it always does. Seattle, at the end of that area, will have about 40 minutes' warning.
Hekla sounds cool as, er, hell, but not nearly as dangerous as some of its peers. What would be scarier is if it stopped venting. Nobody wants the supervolcano to blow.

And i'm living about 700 km away from Hekla. That's in +àlesund in Norway.
When Eyjafjallaj+¦kull erupted in 2010, we was sitting in the middle of the ash clouds here in +àlesund when the ash moved over Norway. And yes, i was smelling the sulfur gas pretty good here.
And this was just from the little Eyjafjallaj+¦kull volcano.
Now, imagine if Hekla would erupt with the same type of gasses and ash type as Eyjafjallaj+¦kull had, And imagine if the wind took the ash from the Hekla volcano towards Reykjavik if the volcano would be like 5-10 times bigger than Eyjafjallaj+¦kull?
110 km from the Hekla volcano is not directly safe if Hekla shows it's true power and if the winds are going towards Reykjavik then. Reykjavik would be covered with many meters with ash on the ground.
Yes, this is the worst case scenario though. But i believe it wont be this bad if it actually erupts.
Anyways, the icelanders are used to those kinds of things, so i'm sure everyone will be fine and will be prepeared at all times.
EDIT: If you want to get news about earthquakes and volcanoes from Iceland, then this blog is nice: http://www.jonfr.com/volcano/
