I'll argue this point. A lot of people think that within the swarm there is an "All or nothing mentality" whenever we go after someone. This simply isn't the case. Unlike many nullsec alliances we don't have "RED PEN LEVEL 5 CTAS" where if you are caught doing anything but the op of the moment you are kicked out of the space guild.
One poster wrote "because they hate that we are free" and that's largely the truth. The space empire could be actively sieged from all sides and if I chose to spend my time station trading in Jita... exactly 0 people would care.
The comment that everything is a dull grind kind of ignores all of the programs we have running. Sure the average PVE carebear goon that only shows up to major fleet fights will be doing the dull grind. But we have a blackops group, a blackops hotdrop/interdiction group, as well as a small gang squad who are active during most timezones and allow our players to do things OTHER than bash structures. And because we're free to do whatever the hell we want, they are often out bothering someone while someone else is bashing structures.
I can't speak for too many other coalitions but I do know that TEST alliance and the HBC has it's own squad programs similar to our own, tight knit communities within the larger community that have specific skillsets and goals, and that they are largely free to do whatever the hell they want as well. |

Oh I didn't mean that it was a dull grind for Goons, your higher level of organization brings more opportunity and choice. And better support for those choices.
Rather as Alavaria said, its a grind for the people who end up at odds with such a machine. This kind of dichotomy exists in most hobbies and games. People play for different reasons with different goals and levels of commitment and time considerations, and yet the playing field is the same for all participants.
The easiest way for a player to buffer oneself against loss to a superior competitor is to demonize them and to tell oneself that had all things been equal (time to practice, equipment, coaching) it would have been a fair fight. The mental landing point of this apparatus is "Goons are cheating bastards."
Its just one of those things that is easy to believe and so people do, nothing to do with the truth.

What's funnier is their requirements for mics. Apparently in all that intelligence gathering swarm they don't understand USB mics are horrible. Which is why the pros (MLB+ gamers) use plugin mics for their Astro preamps. I was going to type in an education lesson on the ap form why the Sennheiser PC360 with it's plugs is superior, but I couldn't stop laughing and quickly exited the form. It told me all I needed to know about the swarm -- dumb, dumb, dumb.

Because they have their pets do the dirty work. The basic reason is because they actively search and exploit any and every aspect of the game they can. They feel they require special attention and consideration. Should you ever have the displeasure of being in their voice chat this question would be answered.
On a good note, they do give people someone to despise, so this could be considered a community service. |

Though I've never had any interaction with the Goons in Eve, I've played on the same team with them in other games (never been a SA member because.. you know... tenbux) and like any large organization some of them are real jerks but for the most part their main concern usually seems to come down to 'are we having fun?'. Yeah, every once in a while they seem to be overly negative about certain things and can occasionally throw a tantrum or two, but overall everyone I've played with has been a good guy.
As for how 'serious' they are, I think one of the main reasons they do as well as they do is the freedom that they allow their members to do what they want. A lot of guilds/corps/whatever end up tearing apart because different people have different expectations of others and feel slighted if they don't feel like they are 'pulling their weight'. This leads to burnout and a lot of drama. Goons enter in full well knowing that members are allowed to do what they want, and seem to thrive on the drama.
I know personally that, due to RL commitments, I will never be able to join most super serious spaceship groups even though I would like to experience it someday. It's nice to know that there are some new person friendly (even if it is only for forum members new players, it's not like it's hard to join if you really want) groups out there that still let people have fun playing the game without having to devote their life to it.
Anyway, this is from the perspective of other games (notably GW2 and PS2) |

personally i don't like them because they make ****** posts on forums. It's very rare occasion when someone from goons posts something smart and useful. Here is an answer, but it concerns all of the large alliances:
When you post on these forums alot of people will judge your post by what alliance/corp you are from.
Your post will probably be viewed with Bias depending on the standings of the readers own alliance with yours and/or whatever reputation your corp/alliance has in eve.
Ill go even further and say alot of people will also concider others *insignificant* if they arent from an established community. Because of this, threads like this will be very skewed and biased and it will be impossible to get a straight answer.
Note: these are not my personal views, nor are they the views of everyone who visits this forum. Its merely something that Ive caught on within these forums. |

I am sure goons are not the only alliance to do these types of things, but here are a few things I've either seen myself, or was able to see via API keys and such.
Mild to What the?
1) Camp in the enemy, then have contests in local to see who can come up with the most creative, txt based ****/***** to post in local chat.
2) Make a link and call it something someone would click on like "Kill report" or "enemy fleet composition" but have the link actually be to the most horrific images imaginable. Everything from a 90 year old woman naked and being "simulated I'd hope" gang raped to a splatted body of someone that jumped out of skyscraper.
3) Recruitment scams. You apply to join. They say, okay, we need full API. Then, once they have that they say, if you awox, we have to pay, so wee need X million... usually about 10%-20% of your net worth... as an insurance policy You have 5 billion ISK, they need 500 million to a billion. As soon as you pay that, they have you hooked. You are NOT going to want to walk away from that investment.
Your next email will be, something like, director balked. We need another 1 billion and you have to give us a carrier/dread. Do you walk from the 1 billion you gave them, or fork over another 2 billion?
Doesn't matter, because if you fork that over, the next email will be for another 2 billion ISK worth of assets. This keeps going until they have everything you have... which they know what that is since they have your API.
AND, once they have bled you like that, well, you can pretty much forget ever getting in, because the last thing they want is a corp/alliance mate that is VERY angry for having been forced to hand over their entire net worth to get in.
4) Like the above, but they actually accept you into corp. They have you set up currier contracts with no deposit to move all your stuff. As soon as the currier contracts are up, they accept them, boot you from corp, and just keep all your stuff.
5) Another one I saw. Real life co-workers. One is in goons and one is with a rival. The rival, the boss of the goon, decides it will be better if they were in same corp, so applies to switch sides. He has a carrier and a dread. Goons agree to accept the boss/rival. They have him contract over his dread for them to move, and jump his carrier into goon space. Once there, they kill his carrier, pod him, and keep his dread.
When the boss asks the goon that works for him WTF?, the guy says "They said I had to go along, or they'd make my life so miserable, I'd never want to play EVE or any other MMO ever again".
This is just a small sample, and, as I said, I'd guess Goons are not the only ones that do these kinds of things. |

Why people hate Goons ? And The CFC ?
The stupid reasons: 1. Because they payed some random dude 500 mil to get in regardless the fact that there is a guide in GSF description. Stupid. 2. They were ganked in their pi+êada freighter. More stupid 3. They hate, because they are asocials living in a cellar. More stupid as there is no reason.
The valid reasons: 1. They were BoB 2. They were purged once or more times 3. They can't break our spirit and smiles on our faces 4. They claim to be elite pvper's. Flying to a sovereign space with ten t1 frigates is very "1eet" strategy indeed. Oh noes we got blobbed.
Simple as that. Even that we fly spaceships it still comes to people and their urges and feelings. (tear harvester activated) In CFC each entity is treated on friend basis, not pet basis like in renter alliances. We help each other when it hits the fan. Renting space is wrong. Being elitist is wrong. Fun is the right way.
<3 We have friends not overlords. We have fun in a game, not second jobs. Any of your arguments is invalid. <3

People hate Goons because Goons just want to have fun, in a nutshell. It's a game, and Goonswarm encourages their members to treat it as such. If you take internet spaceships seriously, then Goons are not your buddies.
It's also because they are an outside community that came into eve, rather than a community formed by it. So the relationships and ways of interacting already existed. Many of the interactions seem a little harsh to people who are not members. Remember, it's a comedy forum playing a spaceship game, not eve players who "happen" to be members of a comedy forum.
And there is a love for using they, there, their and they're in the right places which really gets up the noses of people who can't form sentences in their own language. Goons refuse to admire stupidity. And many eve players are, frankly, kinda dumb. The dumbest ones get scammed.
Goons are awesome. Adopt one today.
