I'm building a Rack Mount computer system to play eve on and am attempting to find out whats the maximum VRAM (graphics card ram) that eve online can actually use, also what are the future likely requirements on storage i.e. will some of the loading screens be removed ect ect, as currently due to the loading screens i believe that spinning media storage (HDD) are as effective as non spinning media (SSD) when it comes to eve online as the load time is engineered into the game. |

Why would you want to build a rack mount gaming PC...?
Theoretically, I do not think there is a limit on the amount of RAM that EVE uses, though there will be a limit where all resources have been loaded into memory and more memory is just not going to help.
Spinning disks will never be as effective as SSD, since while some of the loading screens actually depend on your internet connection, there is loading going on, and having an SSD WILL make that faster. The difference might be negligible though. Want images? |

Thank you for your answer the VRAM is one thing that cant be calculated by the size of the install as the amount of rendered items in game are not the same as the amount in the install as there may be areas where several copies of the graphics are in use hence my query as to the maximum amount of VRAM eve could use.
i have a spare rack-mount system so figured i would make it a gaming rig ..... plus space issues on my table means computers in the rack-mount unit make more sense.
I'm wondering if the loading benefit of an SSD would be about the same as a RAID array (already installed) for eve online. |

Even a mediocre SSD outperforms any raid array in one way or another.
You have less than 1ms of latency for starters (something a raid array can only dream about), and a single SSD already performs as fast (via SATA3) as an average RAID array does.
Obv. you can get RAID arrays that do +2GB/s read and write, but they are massive beasts of +20 drives, you can do the same with 4 SATA3 SSDs, and recieve the <1ms latency aswell :) |

but does that speed actually translate in to a better eve online experience? that is the question.
obviously the best graphics that eve can output = a better experience the storage requirements will change and how much will the client need of the new speed avail. |

There is little chance than SSD's will translate to a significantly better EVE experience Want images? |

hence why I'm trying to find out the maximum amount of video processing power eve can use as i believe that's where the best experience improvement can be achieved |

I'm pretty sure one of the devs at one time said that he toyed with eve on an sad and it made the overview more responsive, **** do i know how, i assume its wit hthe way eves cache is on hdd, and that the sad has 0 seek time v0v?

Do you have an unusually quiet rack mount system? The one I have is about the equivalent of a few hairdryers on high. |

This is not a definitive answer by any means, so take my answer with a few grains of salt.
A few years back "Lord Maldoror" of the Corporation "Fairlight Corp" and Alliance "Rooks and Kings" made an AWESOME EVE Video about the usage of Triaged Carriers in Fleet Combat. The video was called: The Clarion Call - Triage Special. I suggest you watch this video to see how well his pc system handled recording the battle and displaying it (with zero observed lag imho). In that thread he replied to someone with his pc's system specifications.
I would read his reply more than once to let it sink in. But from my interpretation of his reply, EVE doesn't fully support two or more video cards correctly (YET), but definitely DOES benefit from the superior speed of a SSD. So I would believe that a RAID0 SSD Setup with a high end 1GB Video Card would be a good benchmark for optimum performance.
I'm currently building a new pc and I'm going to run a SSD for the OS (Win7 64 bit), a WD Velociraptor 15K HD for the Windows Swap Partition, and my old eVGA 9800 GTX+ Superclocked Video Card. I'm also throwing in 8GB of DDR3 1600 Ram since my previous Win7 Install really performed well with that much ram. I believe that would be a good 'bang for the buck' setup on a more reasonable pc budget. |

Check his reply in a thread of one of his recent mini videos (near the bottom of page 1). He's done benchmarks on fleet fights and suggests that cpu time is the most important thing in eve right now (and also recommends SSDs for triage pilots).
I've read on failheap that Rooks and Kings look for at least 25,000 3dmark06 from their logistic pilots as baseline. That's more of a cpu than graphics benchmark nowadays, so makes sense about the cpu thing. |

i have a quad core xeon cpu, 8 gig ram and a 465-er nvidia graphics card on two monitors. that lets me run 3 clients of eve with ease, some lag when doing 4.
if you have plenty of rack space, i would do the following : do not build ONE pc, but two or three. its cheaper and easier. hook them together with one mouse, one keyboard system like multiplicity and enjoy the game. one advantage : if one pc crashes for whatever reason, the other still works. also, depending on what you do, you can boot one or both machines and somewhat 'scale' your computation needs while saving power when cruising around with one client.
ssds are magically great. but i had the issue that within one year, 7 out of 12 discs died for whatever submagical reason... :(

Thanks everyone for your opinions and suggestions due mainly to the serendipitous circumstances i have found myself with 3 rack mount cases (Antec 4U22ATX if anybody wanted to know ( http://www.overclockers.com.au/article.php?id=227538 )) two of them came with internals including 4 gig of ram a pcie slot and 2 200gig HDDs as such ill be looking at graphics cards first for these existing systems
for the third empty case i am looking into a dual or quad cpu solution for a brute force powerful system looking at throwing enough ram at it to load all of eve onto a ramdrive at startup so a ssd would not be needed for speed
any additional thoughts are welcome.
