Please consider changing downtime to GMT 5AM.
Justification:
Just about Every company that I worked for in IT required us to reboot servers during NON Production hours, usually anywhere from 12AM-6AM.
Thank you.

Downtime is at this time for a reason.
It has been this way for two years.
A forum post is not going to change this.

But this game is played by people all over the world. So, someone will always be inconvenienced to a degree. I think it's fine the way it is.

I must apoligize to the Developers and Server Admins of EVE for suggesting such a foolish thing. It was only a suggestion, please dont take away my ships and isk!
I retract my original suggestion and beg they dont accidently kill my character.

the only ones really nerfed by the current times are those of us in the australian - new zealand timezones ie 7pm - 8pm or 9pm - 10pm and for NZ - 11pm-12 midnight.
If they get more chinesse players then the same thing applies similar to aussie timezones.
Rest of the world are fine though

Erm there is no non production hours, this game is probably played by someone in every time zone. So no matter what time downtime is, it will be at the wrong time for a certain group.
If your in the UK, go have lunch, browse the forums and the server will be back up :D
p.s, its not unusual for the server to be back up after alot less than an hour, if im around I tend to check it after 30 min.

I live in the UK too and Monday to Friday I am at work so it does not bother me but when I want to play at the weekend the downtime always seems to happen just when I am getting somewhere . . .
Earlier would be better . . . "should my signature go here?" |

Downtime was chosen based on activity, I believe. For the largest part of EVE's playerbase (not counting the chinese, who are apparantly going to invade EVE and form a colony of the PRoC... in space), 11-12gmt is either in the middle of the night, or noon. And last I checked, a vast majority have something called school, work and/or sleep. ---

Umm..
There is such thing as Out of Hours support you know. The suggestion is not all that bad you know.I towuld be more the possible to put a OOO team in place for downtime to be in the early morning here in the U.K
But it would cost CCP a penny or two...
Why don't you take out a contract with Fujitsu to support an OOO team that could monitor and sort out the downtime early in the morning :p That way if you agree a SLA you will be able to getsome money back everytime they mess it up :D

There's less players on around 12pm eve time because of downtime, not the other way around.
I bet if you left the servers on now 24 hours a day that the quietest time would no longer be 11am, but more like 9am eve time.
Also, just you wait til some more Asians get on, we're a bit screwed atm because it falls at 7pm our time which is just bloody useless. If you want Asians to join the fun, the DT needs to move back 1h or 2h otherwise they'll lose paitence. __

Why is it necessary to run downtime every day? |

IMO the current choice is a good one. Europeans are at work/school. North Americans are leaving for work, just waking up or still asleep, and the only people really hurt by it are the Aussies (isn't it like 2000-2100 there?)
OTOH, 0500GMT downtime would hit peak gaming hours in North America, since that would be 0000 eastern time and 2100 west coast time. Not to mention it would make the server guys irate

I remember a dev posting that this "might" change to weekly in the future but that was about 2 years ago. But then again at that time CCP had memory leak problems and people getting stuck all the time, and the only way to "release" them was a server reboot.
Remember the "Don't go to Amarr Prime, we are having problems with the jump gates." kind of messages ? And then 45 minutes later "Dear players, the server will be going down in 10 minutes for a quick reboot.", and the the message "Please cancel any stuck petitions you have if you are no longer stuck. Thank you". Ah, those were the times
But now I think it has something to do with letting the devs apply "server hot fixes", tweaking things and doing server H/W maintenance. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein |

Because CCP is not filthy rich and doesnt have the best server structure, as anyone in a fleet battle can attest to :)

Pretty sure they have said several times that it would in theory be possible to run without or with fewer downtimes. But that there was several reasons that was easier they liked it the way it was now. Afair. Not much more specific than that I'm afraid.
Verone: As long as the debated subject has nothing to do with in game happenings or relations, what does it matter if its an alt or not? I like to think that Eve players are mature enough not to take a difference on out of game subjects like this into the game. But I understand if some might not take that chance. (And some might be posting at times when they should be doing other stuff. :)

I remember them going through a period of trying only having DT every 48 hours. It would work sometimes, but they ended up having to do several uncheduled reboots when the server got too clogged up.
Most of the stuff that happens during DT could be done with the server live, which is probably what they were hoping to move to. The problem is that there isn't enough spare server capacity to do the tasks fast enough without impacting playability. So the clean-up queue gets longer and longer and the server eventually chokes on it's own trash. Some of this is obvious stuff like respawning roids, updating market data etc. But it will also be to do with things like the database struture.
In a database optimised for reads and/or writes (which I would assume eve's is), deleting something can become a very computationally expensive operation. To stop the server grinding to a halt everytime someone decides to clean out their bookmarks folder, a flagging system is used. As a write is quicker than a delete, a special indicator is written to the "deleted" value that basically says "this is deleted". Any further queries to the database see that flag and duly ignore the entry. So the delete appears to happen very quickly. Unfortuantely, the entry is still in the database, clogging it up.
Usually, these flagged entries are properly deleted by a background process that makes use of spare capacity so as not to dusrupt live operations. But if there isn't enough spare capacity for the delete agent to work as fast as people are deleting items, then the database will slowly get clogged with deleted items, and you'll need a DT for the delete agent to catch up, or face a gradual slowing down of your database.
Now, consider the sheer scale at which things are being deleted from the DB. Every time you combine 2 stacks into one, there's an item deleted. Every time a ship gets blown up, the ship, every module fitted and all the cargo that's destroyed must be deleted. Every rat that gets killed, every can that's popped. Every time you build something, the build requirements get deleted. Every time you repackage the ship, the original ship is deleted and replaced with a repackaged version (similarly for assembling ships). Every time you refine something, the ore/module/etc gets deleted. Every time you trash something. Every time you start a skill training from a skill book. Every time you give something to an agent, or sell something to an NPC. That's a very considerable amount of junk trying to clutter up the DB.
Of course, the regular DT's do also help a lot when there are dropped nodes, hotfixes etc that need addressing.
Beware those beyond here, for they cannot see evil. |

As a player in NZ, I don't mind the DT toooooo much, as it currently hits at 11pm, which kind of forces me to go to bed.
Once daylight saving stops again here, it will be back to midnight, which is even better.
But the Aussies must hate it, as it would be bang on their playtime, at about 9-10pm....now THAT would suck..... CEO and Founder of NWA Now Recruiting - New players welcome
