At the end of the day, (sadly) all EVE is are pixels on a screen. Maybe CCP should give players reminders once every few hours that they are, infact, just playing a game.

Woa...woa...where on earth does real life enter into a video game? The time you spent acquiring assets should be time well spent. As in...you should be having fun playing the game. So complaining that time was "wasted" because you lost assets is ludicrous...the time is "wasted" if you're weren't having fun acquiring the assets...not if those assests are lost in combat. If you don't have fun playing Eve...missioning, npc hunting, bounty hunting, mining, selling ships, whatever it is you do...then maybe you're playing the wrong game. Piracy is a defining factor in Eve. It makes the game interesting and gives low security space the only element of risk imagineable. Eve is a PvP game...that's what makes it so awesome. I don't fear some silly npc faction coming after me...I have to worry about an intelligent person behind a keyboard hunting me. If a pirate gets you...get him back. Or hire someone else to.
