Haven't checked it out, but do you have the updates as well? Friends of mine need the CM...

no change in status I am afraid, still waiting on server login details. So going to have to use the 'when its done' card which is what kreischweide told me.
I had a chat with kreischweide about some aspects of eve and the costs, especially the big consuming operations like the server stats which were part of the reason for the high operating costs with close to 5000 hits per second during unsceduled dt's and people using a refresh of the whole index instead of just clicking on the server status to update it which lead to hundreds of db calls per refresh and so on.
It went above me, as Kreisch and dancer code their own db class and everything from the ground up. He talked about a new staty that would reduce the bw from 300gb to around 100gb, anyway it went way over my head the rest of the convo.
So in summary eve-i will return, and it will be soon(tm), Dancer and kreischweide both have full time jobs (and second jobs) in some cases to contend with for time working on eve-i so bear with them and our new host

Why not write a script to detect when x IP does x refreshes of the main index in x seconds or less and then send that user a site IM (or, if the user is not registered, send the message to the front page or to an ID in their cookie) about the better way?

That would require extra proccessing on EVERY SINGLE hit, not a good fix (not to mention all the users behind the same NAT that many ISPs use). :) It would be easier/better to have the front page change to JUST a server status page when the server is down (if there is a server status monitor on the front page already, then there is no extra processing involved here) with a link to the main site. This is the same type of thing most sites do under a heavy load.. :)

Apache/Apache2 has a nice little module written for it called mod_dosevasive you can download. I use it on my production servers. What it does, is if too many page requests are recieved(configurable at the virtual host and main server levels in the conf files), it sends the user a 403 and temporarily blacklists them.
When I first used dosevasive, it cut my bandwidth useage to 1/3 of what it was.

Damn! Now I'm suffering - is the Object Explorer hosted anywhere else?
I found this... http://evegames.hostingbig.com/eve/data/index.html
which is awesome, but I can't compare a list of similar modules
Hope you get back on your feet soon EVE-I!

We get good deals on our connections in Sweden =) All my connections has unlimited bandwidth, EVE-Files wouldn't last long without it and its daily 100GB+ traffic.

I'm building a Ship-Fitter tool based on that site above (jide gave me the data, so it's cool :D) - couple days and I should have a functional release for the masses. So much XML! MY EYES! -------- I use homeless people and small children for fuel. |

Sounds awesome Corair! I was thinking of doing something similar myself - do you have to use a site like the one above or is there a database file you can pull the information from?

So is there any update?
The DNS thing is obviously wrong, they don't take that long to propagate.
So the server obviously isn't back up, which of course is fine. But any ETA?

If you guys are having such massive DB access you should start running memcached. It caches mysql DB access to memory. It drastically speeds up DB access. Also if you are getting a massive amount of hits on semi static files switch to using lighttpd for non-scripted files. Just be sure that you bind httpd and lighttpd to different IPs on port 80. Otherwise you can run into problems with firewalled users.
I have uploadhut setup like that and it boosted us up to 3-5K connections from 2K. But we serve up alot of 50M files as well. Lighttpd takes up much less CPU. Now if I can solve the problem of near constant hack, syn flood and ddos attacks.

100Mbps connection so far. Though it doesn't help that the machine only has pata disks. Two disks in a raid-0 (aka a sneeze away from failure) array are barely fast enough. I'd like a 1Gbps connection, but I think dual 2.8 xeons are a little underpowered for that.
As far as eliminating ddos, syn floods I wish there was something like the cisco ASA 5510 that wasn't 2500$.

Increase ram, load all static files into ram instead of reading from disk that should be it fast, and as for the ddos I hear bbb can offer you a nice gigabit for some 50000kr ;)
Personally I prefer them lovely extreme network routers before cisco products - or simply dun get enemies that will ddos you, I been there myself many many times but only once my network went on its knees, prolly luck though.
That much for OT talk - eve-i get back here now! :)
