Yeah, it is a bit short. It seems strange that they'd even be thinking of developing a property around something the length of an AAR. In fact, isn't that text limit actually shorter than just the standard comment text limits? I'm looking at the Remaining Characters count and I think it started at 6,000.
But if I decide to do it (have to figure if I have an interesting enough story to tell in an interesting enough way in a mere 5k characters. Not a lot of room for "color") -- the text box entry doesn't actually bother me. As long as the word count is known, you can write and edit for that space and cut 'n paste. |

Very interesting contest :).
However, I was so psyched about it that I was about to submit stories when I re-read and realized the emphasize on REAL eve online stories.
Unfortunately, despite being a 2004 player, there is nothing that I ever experienced that was astonishing or mind=blown compared to stuff I've seen and heard from others.
Oh well, I guess its back to my dark little corner with fake-fanfictions :). But I like the site and all around it. Very impressive.
I tend to miss out on EVE-O site features, hence this question:
Speaking of eve fanfictions, do we only have the forums as a place of submitting or is there a "EVE Fanfiction Site" like the "TRUE story" one we have for this contest?
If there is no such site for fanfiction - REALLY, I'd love to see one for the fanfictions. I like the voting and setup of it.
edit: well... there was this time that felt like first sex when I tackled this hard-to-catch/arrogant Curse-cruiser in a highsec wardec back when I was getting back into an active role in the game (I was in hiatus/semi active between 2005 and 2007'ish). He was a real killer for my highsec corp of miners/carebears , and our mini call to arms required me to hop in the only frigate that was in my hangar at system -> A bloody tackling Tristan (long before its tiericide). Guess he underestimated me for whatever reason, I tackled, we blew him up - and we're cheering like girls.
Another time invovled me probing a group of expensive faction-BS pilots of the same wardeccing corp. They were afk and back then, nobody was afraid of being probed in a safespot (let alone the different and complicated probing mechanics). ... So I was in this Minmatar Probe frigate and happened to have learned the mindbogging probing stuff.........
Anyhow, nothing specially really. I'm sure there are better stories out there, starting with those in Jita. :-D Using tablet, typoes are common and I'm not going to fix them all. |

Oh my god.
An EVE-based TV series would be amazing.
Whether it deals with boardroom deals, the life of some smalltime smugglers or pirates (cough, Firefly, cough), or battles like Asakai, it would have so much potential. It's: -127 for the story title -5k for the plot summary (I typed a '0' and it went to 4999), -2k for author notes -60 for support points -500 for explain said points
As for Forum Posts, yes, it's 6k.
Even looked in Internet Explorer to see if there was a "Browse and Submit"...sometimes Chrome won't display those. But nope.
...whole thing doesn't make since "Plot Summary". Infers that at some point I should be able to upload the full story.
.........CCP. Are you out of ideas and bumming them off the players. And that's why you just want "the back of the book"-synopsis. So you can fill in the details.

WebTV, using their CGI Software. But in-house WebTV... I don't want a bunch of censorship. |

Dyner wrote:Pon Teyuen wrote:"Exceeds the Text field's limit" is a good point. I looked and found it strange that they didn't specify any kind of maximum length -- which is writing contest 101. So could I write something the length of Empyrean Age? On the other side, I'm hoping their not expecting a 2-paragraph forum post entry that one just typed into the text field. Plot Summary - 5000 characters leftI don't see anywhere on the "Submit Story" page where you would say attach a document. Which is kind of stupid. I mean how are you suppose to properly vote on a story when all you have are the cliff-notes. PS: Chribby shouldn't be allowed to post a story...he's to love-able not to win First :P Thanks for the feedback. The 5000 character limit was put put there as an attempt to create "artistic constraints", with the goal to focus the storytelling so that it would be more of a treatment or synopsis, rather than a fully fleshed out story. That would make it easier for readers to trawl through all the stories once the voting process starts.
A number of people have expressed their concern that this is way to short. We'd love to hear opinions, pro and cons for this. Are there people that like keeping it short, so that it-¦s concise, or do most of you want more space to better illustrate your stories? |

Why not keep it as it is. And let us attach a Document file of say no bigger than 1MB.
If people like the Plot Summary they can read the entire story.
Unless you could setup another field and allow 'Bold', 'Italic', and 'Underline'...bonus would be alignment (left, center, right). But then you'd have to set the character limit to something around 50k (my 7page short story is 10k, for reference). |

Do you expect me to complress ten years (or even two years) of EVE history into 5000 characters? The "Epic history of lie" is 15kb of bare text, and only covers about two years of EVE History. |

You can provide an "elevator pitch" summary of the plot and a link to a more verbose version on the story, if the 5000 character limit is not enough to describe the story you want to submit. |

You have to admit Torfi many of us can hardly fit these things into an elevator pitch version.
Here is a draft version of some interview with some of those 10 year olds..

I think the 5000 word constraint is appropriate. I wrote a long winded soliloquy myself, but then thought it was much better to have everyone create something that would pique interest through a shorter version. If someone doesn't want to read the short version, why would they want to read a tl;dr one? Would you like a kitten? |

Will there be any means to prevent voting from devolving into a simple popularity contest? Also, these tag, discussion, and hit filters seem to guarantee that the actual quality and content of the stories will - at best - play a tertiary role in determining winners.
I recommend a panel of CCP judges boil it down to a modest pool of desirables, selecting the type of story they're looking for "Early-round 'American Idol' style". This is ideal because there's no way voters will read every story to ensure they afford only the most deserving their support. If the field is reduced to some ten or twenty finalists, however, there is a higher probability of votes being well-informed.
Failing that, remove all identifying marks from every story (not foolproof, I know. That's why this is plan B), and only allow players to view one at a time, selected at random. Do not allow them to view another until they have read and rated the one they're on, preferably on a scale instead of a simple yes/no. |

I agree with Katja on this, popularity isn't a good filter for what makes a good story, or even a good filter for what story the community cares most about. It is more likely to filter out popular people than popular stories, regardless of the quality of those stories. I'd much rather that the director of the tv series or the writer of the comic uses his expertise to select stories, based on what makes a good story. |

I think changing it now isn't the right way to go, as it's unfair to those who already wrote their entries in the style of a synopsis. |

Definately..can't change the format now that its well underway. Love the Idea but do think that there is nothing to stop this degenerating into anything but a corp/ alliance driven voting frenzy. Thats ok as far as it goes. CCP will still have a resource from which it can draw material for its artists, storywriters and (hopefully) storyboarders and screenwriters. Would just be nice if some of those whose material is used or drawn upon could get some of the reward as opposed to the purely politically fueled vote machines.
Theres now over 76 pages of listed stories. Can't see how most of the stories will even get read by the viewing public, let alone get a shot at an impartial vote.
Still, a terrific initiative and gratz to the eventual winners and those who've taken the time to give me something to read over the past 2 weeks. Personally I'm fonder of some of the smaller less epic experiences but I've enjoyed most that I've managed to get to.
P.S. Shameless self promotion here "Honor among Thieves"..by myself, have tried to contact one of the characters featured in the story anyone form Meatsheild Bastards form 2011 know if Ginstery is still active...now in Perkone?

I read through the rules again, and it seems I overlooked that the voting doesn't actually determine which stories will be used in any products. The voting only determines who gets the prizes. (which is still pretty crappy if you ask me) But any of the stories can be used for the comic or tv series. |

The prizes will go for the most voted (which means the ones with most friends will get the prizes, not the best) and the good stories maybe will appear in some TV show or Comic book and you will get nothing which seems pretty unfair. Selected stories for a comic or TV show deserve some kind of prize in my opinion. |

I'd be happier if they credited the people who wrote the stories as co-writers. |
