Small part of a Galaxy, its a star cluster. Its not a universe in and of itself - watch the intro movie.

It's certainly not big enough to be a universe (since it's supposed to be set in the same universe as this galaxy, a universe is billions if not an infinite number of galaxies, etc) so I'm guessing it's supposed to be a galaxy. The gatable systems in Eve are too few in number to equal the number of stars in a galaxy too, but it doesn't say anywhere that all the solar systems in the Eve galaxy have been gated to, so I tend to assume that it's supposed to be that there are lots of systems not worth gating to (no planets, no resources, etc) or unexplored inbetween and beyond the systems we play in. Certainly it seems as if the whole place is in one big nebula, which usually aren't quite galaxy-wide.

EVE takes place in a cluster of stars far from mankindĘs original habitat, planet Earth. How far away, and whether or not that cradle of civilization still exists, is a mystery. Humans arrived through a natural wormhole and, gazing up upon an alien sky they had never seen, were completely unable to determine where this new world was located.
simply put, I think the question is one of opinion, as an argument could be made for either one.
I'm going to say it's a different universe though - because the physics are a bit strange here....

It's a star cluster of some sort within our galaxy. (At least that's cool sounding to me) ------ (\_/) (O.o) (> <) |

We don't really know it's in our universe. People have only travelled there via the Eve Gate, and that could just as easily have rippd a hole into a parallel universe as another part of our own. But it's probably safe to assume it's in the same universe.

Maybe we are actually in the Milky Way galaxy, but at a different time. As in when people went through the wormhole, they went millions of years into the past or future. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

The game can be said to take place in a "universe" since unvierse also means setting. SO basically any fictional setting (of a book/game/movie, whatever) can be dubbed "universe" for that matter.
However from a practical viewpoint, EVE is a galaxy, and the part we play in is a section of a galaxy, not a very large one, i assume (maybe about 1/1000th of the universe actually). Even with that fraction, there are a lot more ungated stars than gated ones due to reasons already stated (no habitable planets being most important)
So to answer your question: the game is set in a EVE universe setting, but EVE itself is a galaxy, and we play in a small part of it. ---------------

Eve takes place in part of a Galaxy. The universe is -everything-, which is countless galaxies, each containing billions of stars.
I think Eve takes place in a galaxy that is not the milky way, as some of the best astronomers in the world could possibly locate stellar bodies known and seen by earth.
Either way, the setup is decent, as it leaves you guessing. However, I think that time travel would be a bit excessive, but something else that bothers me is there is really no sign of alien life ANYWHERE. If you're one of those rare people who are 100% certain that we are alone, that's fine, but If the chance of the creaton of life is really just a few billionths of a % (forget where I read it, some college science book), then it's mathmatically possible.
If you have an average of even just 1 planet per star able to support life (in a way we know of), or able to become a planet that can support it, that is still billions of chances of life in just the milky way alone.
So yeah.. dunno where the Eve Galaxy is, but the lack of Alien life is abit silly.

The fact that the entire star cluster shuts down and blinks out of existence at least once each 24 hours leads me to the conclusion that EVE must in fact be in a parallel universe that obeys different laws of nature.
Either that, or EVE is in fact an artificial microcosm constituted by a bunch of electrons whizzing around a PC server somewhere! --------- "Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy." - Albert Einstein |

Nahh, the people of eve just exist on a 23 hour clock. The 'downtime' is, as far as the inhabitents are concerned, over in an eyeblink and they dont even notice it.
patch days are armageddon..or something..hmmm..i like toast.

Ahh so the eve-gate leads through time and space into an office in London.Bit of let down really, it could at least have lead somewhere sunny, with beaches.

Edited by: Nero Scuro on 09/09/2005 09:51:12 Backstory sez - you can only gate to systems with binary stars. So it's likely to be all the binary stars in one galaxy.
Quote: So yeah.. dunno where the Eve Galaxy is, but the lack of Alien life is abit silly.
Not really. There are only, what, 5000 systems in EVE? Unlikely you'd find something as rare as life on any of 'em. You're talking billion to one chances.
No, what's abit silly is that they DID find life. Fedo, Long Limbed Roe, Furrier.

Tell that to agents. They give you bonuses/missions that end during downtime. _________

People actually travelled here by a massive stargate built either end of the wormhole so that ships that wernt specially reinforced could travel between the 2 ends, and since that doesn't transfer you to other dimensions it is pretty clear that it is the same universe.

There is alien life. Fedos, Furriers, Slaver hounds, the hanging long-limb ...etc. Just becuase there arn't any sentient alien species doesn't mean us humans are the only life in EVE
Edit: damn Nero beat me to it

Definitions: Galaxy:A collection of stars. Typically many millions. Universe:A complete, self-contained time/space continuum typically containing matter and energy.
Given the 'paltry' few thousand stars on the map it's unlikely that it represents a galaxy and certainly not a universe.
It's also worth bearing in mind that the map only shows those stars we can reach. There may be other stars within the over region of space that aren't part of the gate network and of course stars outside the map region also not linked.
As an amateur astronomer I would say that the map is a collection of nearby stars linked by jump gates. In all probability it's just a small part of a larger galaxy that we don't currently have access to. -- (Battle hardened miner)

I'm more sceptical about that. Given that our galaxy is approximately the shape of a fried egg (most are) and the diameter IIRC is 100,000 light years and the centre is full of millions of stars and in total it has an estimated (I think) 100 billion stars it seems unlikely that anyone sitting within the ecliptic plane could see every star in the galaxy.
IOW:We might just be on the other side of the galaxy and our view of Sol is blocked. Heck - you probably don't even have to go /that/ far to lose sight of familiar stars.
Then again..it would take a lot to lose sight of all the known extra-galactic objects like other galaxies so you might have a point -- (Battle hardened miner)

If EVE was anywhere near the Milky Way, landmarks like the Great Wall of galaxies and such could be spotted in the sky and used to find one's location.
Thus we know we aren't near Earth. -- Lame, lame, lame. This is Dark Shikari, but I forgot to renew my account (LOL). Be back on my main in a day or two.
