Edited by: Mad Ahab on 10/09/2005 22:55:29 Hmm... EVER? There's alot of video games that were made that redefined gaming for their time. If you listen to the adverisements for them it was all of them :) I suppose I'll list a few I actually remember.
1 Pong. The original console system. At least the original system that sold alot of units.
2 Space Invaders. Some of the original gaming geeks flocked to the arcades in droves to play this game. Made the idea of making money off of video games viable.
3 The Legend of Zelda. No explanation needed.
4 Wizardry. A very early dungeon crawler. A true rpg with charecter sheets and customizable skills.
5 Neuromancer. Based off of the popular Sci-Fi book, this game was a huge seller and redefined rpg gaming for the PC at the time it was out. It even had the Monks of Pong... how cool is that?
6 Civilization. The first real robust strategy game which started it's own genre. Sid Meyer is now very famous because of his creation.
7 Nobunaga's Ambition. One of the first real strategy games for a console. Highly addictive.
8 Castle Wolfenstein. Before Doom and Quake there was this. It's the first real FPS I remember that was worth playing.
9 Warcraft. Redefined strategy gaming with a real time game engine.
10 Final Fantasy VII. To keep this list short I am skipping a few generations, this game totally redefined everything anyone knew about console rpgs. So popular it was later made into a PC version.
11 Grand Theft Auto. The first real mature game to be released for a console. Also probably had one of the largest boards for a shooter game on a console. Also allowed for some open ended play.
There are many more than this but in a historical perspective that's what comes off the top of my head.

1. Elite (BBC Micro FTW!) although if i was to pick it up today I would choose the Atari ST version (much later than the original and featured -omg- filled 3d rather than wireframe).
2. Total Annihilation - loved the modpacks the community created for it -- they weren't all that common then. This game still plays well today btw.
3. Civilisation -- daddy of 'God' games, remember playing this on a 386 (although i think "Populous" preceeded it.) |

Mad Ahab 7 Nobunaga's Ambition. One of the first real strategy games for a console. Highly addictive.
OMG I loved that game, that and Ghengis Khan were the only reason I saved my NES. I use to pop open the cases and change the battries so I could still save my games.
The Total War series was the first one that ever came close to the fun I had with Ghengis Khan and Nobunaga. Ghengis was the first game I played that was two games in one. Conquer Mongolia first and then goto the world map.

Edited by: Bhaal on 11/09/2005 02:45:40 My list:
1) Doom -> Doom II -> Quake -> Half-life -> Counter Strike -> RTCW.
Doom most influential for FPS, I've played most of the FPS' out there.
2) Dune II -> C&C -> Warcraft -> Starcraft -> etc.
Dune II on my Amiga 500, got me started on RTS games.
3) Wing Commander Series -> Privateer -> Homeworld Series-> Starlancer -> Freelancer -> E&B -> SWG -> EVE.
Wing Commander on my Amiga 500, I look fondly upon those memories and how I could not wait for a persistent world Privateer type game that Chris Roberts from Origin promised. Well, Freelancer never turned into Chris' dream, but it lead CCP to create EVE. Wing Commander -> EVE, it's been a great journey for me :)
4) Buck Rodgers RPG -> D&D Adventures of Krynn -> Diablo Series -> Baldur's Gate Series -> IceWind Dale Series -> Morrowind -> NeverWinter Nights -> GuildWars.
For me it all started with Buck Rodgers & Krynn on my Amiga 500, culminating to the end of my Fantasy RPG sweet tooth with Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls III (This is the last game I seriously played until I was accepted into EVE Beta.
My best memories are from the early 90's with my Amiga 500, connecting to BBS' and downloading all my games for free :)
Those games are the most influential to me, but I am one who started with Pong on the Telestar... I've played literally 100's of different games growing up, and now I play only one, EVE.

I loved Populous. I remember playing a 16 bit version on my friend's Sega Genesis all the time. The Sequel, "Populous: The Beginning" was pretty cool too.

C&C (tib sun, red alert, ra2, yr, zero hour, etc) - brought me to RTS half life - for the first time i loved a SP campaign MOHAA - brought me to playing online, a lot. Secrets of Mana - first RPG i played, and i loved it Tomb Raider III - oh man, the good old days of being noob and playing that game with my cousin... i still remember when i was picking up a medpack and a monkey showed up, that was scary Resident Evil (II?) Walking into that corridor, and that fleshless-huge-tongue-redish thing braking and jumping from the window you never forget.

Planescape Torment: Epic emotional journey. I fancied Annah.
Total Annihilation: Still the best RTS out. Add community things for 500 units, 1280x1024 rez, and infinite unit limit. The only RTS with nukes that actually work, and by work, I mean erase a screen of units.
Freespace 2: When you first see the Colossus and realize your Alliance is invincible. Then when you first see the beams of the Sathanas in the nebula and realize maybe it's not.
X-Com 1: Nothing has touched this since released, I still play it.
Sacrifice: Play this. If you don't like it, I'll give you 5 million isk. It's own genre. Best spell-cast chanting of any game, ever.
And I'm going to throw Medieval: Total War in there too.

You see, now I know I'm getting old. I don't think of Wipeout as a retro game, and here is someone who never heard of it. The idea of this thread is to find out what games changed the gaming world (not just list favourites) and Wipeout did that massively. It was the game that put the Playstation on the map, cool bands were all playing it on their tour buses, making what was previously the domain of geeks become chic. It also changed the playing field entirely for ingame music. The soundtrack had Chemical Brothers on it as well as Firestarter by The Prodigy. The long before any game had anything like 'real' music in it. Added to that, it had a style all it's own and a great racer in there to boot. I can't think of many games that had as big an influence on the whole gaming world, never mind genre.
Have a look here for some retro flashbacks or to see for yourself if you never experienced it first hand.
Ahhhhh Wipeout, where are the games that can do what you did now?

Its extreamly hard to put any as Gnere busting.
IMO there has been several turing point games.
The first being the QUAKE series. Second would probably be elite and later Freespace2.
We have to also recognise WoW and the sims to as these have both like it or not have been the public face of games amongst people who never ever play games.

Games that defined gaming....
Tough one.
Spacewar The game to actually invent computer gaming. Back then, in 1962, it was run on a very early version of a desktop computer. It can be desscirbed as a predecessor for 'Asteroids'.
Essentially, this program introduced the concept of games for computers. I'd say it's fairly influental :)
Pong and companions I take Space Invaders, Pong and maybe even Outrun all in the same mention: They were essentially from the same era and introduced possibilities of what games symbolize. The enormous popularization of these games speaks for itself.
Tetris This one gets a mention apart from the previous ones. I don't know where it made it's debut, but untill this day it remains one of the msot played games in gameshistory. It was the first to take the ruleset just a little bit beyond the first layer of gameplay, and added a strategic element to computer gaming.
I know squat about consoles, especially from the 80's. Hence i might leave a lot of games out now, don't be amd at me :P
Doom The first game to make 3d engines popular. It introduced a lot of novelties in 3d functionality and posibility, and it ended up in the stream of clones that started at Doom's release. Doom is the reason why id software is rich, not Wolfenstein - most people seem to forget that. Also, it made an almost unique new feature - real time multiplayer. Doom was the game that inspired professional gaming today.
Dune 2, Civilization, Populous One of the most odd sequels ever - Dune 1 was an adventure game, where Dune 2 introduced an entire new genre onto the scene (RTS, for the unknowing youngsters :P). Populous introduced the godgame, where the player does not control all aspects of gameplay. Civlization was (i read somwhere) inspired on Populous, but ended up introducing the turnbased strategy game.
These 3 defined a new genre on the market, namely, strategy games. This kind of games is special because of the requirements for computer AI - i could name adventures or racing games, but these didn't make the impact that strategy games made on game design.
Quake This one i mention for purely technical reasons. Quake introduced the OpenGL api to the general public, and therefore, specialized 3d cards. How that development ended up can be seen in today's titles.....
Uprising The first game to succesfully combine genres, thus starting the era we still live in today. This game marked the end of the era groundbreaking innovations - after this, only marginal innovations were made, and more than expansions on Uprising's design have not yet been made to any game.
I could name mmorpg's, deus ex, tomb raider, darwinia, mud's or whatever, but all of them can be derived from the above-mentioned games.
