Just wondered what people's top 3 genre busting, games world rocking, jaw dropping, most influential games ever were.
My personal list would probably be.... In no particular order,
1) Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe I could play this right now for sheer brilliant gameplay. 2) Tomb Raider Blew my mind, had never seen anything like it. 3) Wipeout The first game to make games 'cool'?

Silent Hill - Raised the bar for survival horror that no game other than further Silent Hill's has ever come close to matching.
Wipeout - As you said, it's what changed games from 'geeky' to the norm.
Final Fantasy 7 - No one could believe the sheer scale and brilliance of it when it was first released. I still can't. Yet to see another RPG come close to it. ------------------------------

Edited by: Allen Miles on 09/09/2005 23:59:03 Personally the games that kept me busy at the time 24/7 were
Age of Empires Counter-Strike (back in the day) The Realm (first graphical MMO I ever played and got addicted too)

Wipeout.
Definition in our time.
Sony bought that home, ps looked cool, they sold it cool.
PC..... Think civilisation, doubt you find many argue with that. -------- 23
Arguing that namechanging would promote griefing is somewhat moot given the current FFA on that front.

Well, some great games being listed, but I want to know which games you feel defined the gaming industry, rather than your personal favourites.
Warcraft for example, hmmm. Not sure - did it bring anything to the table that redefined a genre?
Wipeout, absolutely without question changed games forever. As did Tomb Raider. (maybe I got a little wistful with Speedball 2)
Although Wolfenstein came first, Doom would have to be there for me. The game that spawned a billion clones.

I think MGS sparked off 'film-style' games, and it did a fantastic job.

I am addicted to squad based FPS games. I have 2 game series that got me hooked on this type of game. Both are Tom Clancey works. Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon. Currently playing Raibow Six 3:Raven Sheild I also like space sims, and the one that stands out as the best space sim, hands down, is Star Trek:Bridge Commander.

Warcraft, Dune 2, Age of Empires are the games that defined RTS genre. Kinda like what Doom and Wolfenstein did to FPS genre. ---------------

Same here! Still one of the best RTS. Starcraft came before C&C?

I think Starcraft did come before C&C....my old P2 350 system can play Starcraft, but not C&C.

1. Homeworld, defineing space RTS and warming up our hearts to space-baced games. I sometimes wonder if we would even have EVE if homeworld never existed.
2. Starcraft, for defineing how a ground baced RTS could be balanced and varied.
3. Half-life, for reviloutionising the first person shooter.

Actually starcraft didnt "define" the RTS genre as much as warcraft did, not only because it was released 4 years after WC, but also because it didn't actually bring any new ideas into RTS. It was still a good balanced game, but there were many, many games before it with the same ideas and similar gameplay.
So yea, I left it out for a good reason. ---------------

I would have left out warcraft and stuck with Dune 2 it defined the RTS, all others picked up where it left off and ran with it...

C&C Warcraft (so many other games shaped around it) Super Mario (all of em on Super Nintendo) Final Fantasy 7 (do game developers not take a clew for future RPGs...) Diablo Medal of Honour (it was great the first few games)
That's all I can remember off the top of my head.
Note: They are not in any particular order.

I'd go for
1. Tetris
2. Zelda: A Link to the Past
3. Half-Life

1) Master of Orion The first game that can really be called 4X, with amazingly well-designed and balanced game mechanics. Stands the test of time very, very well.
2) Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis Uniquely excellent storytelling via the computer game format.
3) Half-life Changed FPS games from "plow into the zombie horde, holding your finger on the fire button" into a more immersive and involving adventure experience.

Dune 2, it's the mother of all real time strategy games, very few RTS games have strayed from the Dune 2 recipe. UFO: Enemy Unknown, best game ever! Guild Wars, for the best technology in online gaming, their way of patching and updating is sheer brilliance.

Ok, so we have the following so far...
Wipeout - For the way it brought gaming into the mainstream (and the music!)
Half Life - Redefined the FPS shooter.
Dune 2 - For starting the economic/gathering RTS
Doom - The first recognisable FPS
Tetris - Making a game into a kind of addictive brain-drug
What about Lemmings? I can't think of anything that came before it. Another World by Delphine on the Amiga? Beautiful stylistic minimalist graphics, jaw dropping animation, great story, awesome intro. Another World
Elite - Open ended game play and the freedom to choose any path you wanted - in SPACE!
Alone in the Dark - The daddy of survival horror?
