Has anybody had a breakthrough after doing research or heard anything about how the breakthroughs are achieved?

How the research breakthroughs are achieved? Patches.

I guess what I had in mind was a rumor I had heard some time ago (about 2 months now).
What I had heard was that if you researched a BP for a month there is a chance that a breakthrough will happen (such as a Miner1 going to a Miner2). I was wondering if anyone could confirm or deny this.

I believe this was the intent and one of the ways new technologies would be introduced into the game. From more recent talks, I think this will not hold true and the originals you have will remain just as they are now. While am not 100% sure of this I am 95% sure. It seems new technologies will be in the from agent missions, cargo drops from destroyed vessels, events and the market.
This is a bit disappointing to those who wanted to play a scientist and make major breakthroughs. The worst part is, if you donĘt want to kill others (NPCs or PCs), it doesnĘt look like you will be working with many of the rare and more exciting technologies irregardless of how smart or skilled your character is.

To me that's the biggest disappointment about Eve. Oberon Inc Website--------------Oberon Sales Page

Edited by: Mordecai on 30/07/2003 11:38:02 I thought that was what the Reverse Engineering skill would do, as you would reverse engineer for example a miner 1 and you would inturn improve it to form a Miner2.
Ive been informed that the skill as with other character creation skill only skills like research. metalurgy are available for buy order, so they will probably be available after the coming patch.

ok. back during the beta phases of Eve, you were able to improve an bp thru research. this was a feature. that is not avaible now. can't recall what it was called, am sure someone will name it soon. but you could basicly take say miner 1 to miner 2. hope this helps

There was a pull down for improving the technology, but it wasn't implemented, just as there is now a pull down for reverse engineering but it can't be used.
I too am royally disappointed by the lack of things for scientists to do. Right now I don't have anything to do that would really help my corp, other than the little bit of research that I can do on BPs. I would even be satisfied with a really slim chance of making a breakthrough or reverse engineering an item, as long as that chance was there.

That is a question worth asking, actually. If such a feature was in Beta, why is it not available now? All the code needed to achieve this must already have been written.

Serina, that was not actually implemented. As I said in my post above, the option was there but it was never implemented (i.e. you could select it but not use it). I guess the Devs were struggling on just how to make such a thing work. So instead of allowing scientists to make the breathroughs, they are now implementing them with patches and drops.
Too bad, seems like the wrong way to do things.

i totally agree.. would be fun as a manufacturer/researcher to be able to do more important stuff like breakthroughs and also more research/industrial skills that help out..
not only from char creation but also in the market please... and they should be high level skills so all just don't train them to have them
