Looking good on the launcher changes. I salute the changes away from torrenting to HTTP/1.1.
Will there be a table or panel about this at fanfest to cover the changes more in depth with player QA?

I'm a little disappointed that bittorrent is being pulled, but I understand as there are so many groups fighting against it. Hopefully it can still be implemented as a secondary/backup/efficient method that's not enforced or required, but available for anyone who wants it. DirectX 11, it's not rocket appliance! |

In the previous thread "linux support?" was responded to with the traditional "we don't officially support linux", so here's an even more unlikely-to-get-a-positive-response suggestion: open source the launcher, let the users take care of porting it to other platforms (as well as allowing for extra customisations on windows, ie there could be an unofficial third party build with support for launching multiple clients with different window sizes and positions, links to launch tools like pyfa / evemon / dotlan maps / etc, systray support, p2p within the same LAN for super-easy multiple-PCs-in-the-same-house downloads, ...).
Unless the launcher contains large amounts of trade-secret code that gives eve a competitive advantage over other MMOs, I can only see this being win-win for developers and users |

What were the arguments against the updater using BitTorrent given that you would still get HTTP/1.1 downloading as a fallback, you would be able to control the upload speed, and that it was not going to be based on Pando Media Booster?
Because wouldn't they have saved CCP money and relaxed demands on your CDN?

(Users of third party launchers not getting official support is a given -- but no official support for an open source launcher would still be much more useful than no official support for a closed launcher) Open sourcing the EVE Launcher isn't something I've considered before. There are some pieces that are licensed that we would probably be unable to share, and there are other platform restrictions that we would not want to disclose (developer signature for our Apple ID as an example). Atropos, you do realize that almost every bittorrent client + library out there can use a regular http server as a peer, aslong as you add it in the torrent as a default peer.

Unfortunately there's much more to professional software development than software development :P
(Open sourcing the launcher would also free it from political / social / business constraints, as third parties could add the controversial features to their own builds and not get CCP involved ^_~ (Still not actually expecting that to happen, but I can dream :P)) |

BitTorrent and HTTP operate on somewhat the same principle.
HTTP is a single stream of data going from the server to you, some servers allow you to resume a transfer, and also initiate a transfer from a certain point in the file to a certain point - which allows you to open multiple streams.
But it's all coming from the same server.
BitTorrent downloads the file from multiple sources (Peers) in the swarm, where each individual has either the entire file or a part of the file. The more people in the swarm seeding (Who has the full file), the higher the speed available to those who don't have the entire file, is.
Basically you can get part 22 of a file from Person A, and part 1 from Person B, and part 2 to 21 from Person C at different speeds, and the torrent client will still be able to piece together the file in proper order.
What CCP apparently didn't realize, was that BiTorrent can use webpeers (HTTP servers) as peers in the swarm. Which means you could use a torrent library in the EVE launcher, if you can't use P2P/BitTorrent you simply don't connect to the swarm, but you'd still connect to the one/two/many webpeers in the swarm, and get data from them, just like if it was regular HTTP. If you suddenly became able to connect to the swarm, it'd automatically figure that out, connect and fine more peers to get data from (and also send data to)
Make sense? or am i rambling? |

Athena Maldoran wrote:what is the significant diffrence between the two? Bittorrent and 1.1..
TL;DR: Bittorrent is faster and more reliable when it works, but some people's ISPs block it, and some people's routers can't handle it. Most torrent libraries can use bittorrent and http at the same time, so we could have the best of both worlds, but that's still a load more effort than only supporting http, and http alone solves ~90% of the problems, so CCP aren't sure that it's worth putting in 20% more effort for 10% more awesomeness.
Also, looking at the last thread, a fairly large number of people are scared of Bittorrent because it's (wrongly) associated with piracy, which is (wrongly) associated with viruses; and some are outright offended that they be asked (with the option of saying no) to take part in making downloads better for everyone, because win/win scenarios are communism, and we can't let the russians win. |

I agree. 1) Make bittorrent an optional, non-default option. With the choice whether to help distribute packages P2P whilst downloading. 2) Regularly promote these options through statistic focused Dev Blogs to highlight the advantages in download speed. 3) The internet becomes a better place! |

Actually, this is exactly what we're doing. The current EVE Launcher uses an custom implementation of rsync over HTTP, commonly known as zsync. This uses HTTP/1.1 to do range requests on a payload we place on our CDN.
In the new EVE Launcher, we're changing the library to libtorrent, but we are only using the webseed component. We opted to go with just webseeds for several reasons; for example, allowing us to use an almost identical technology (so we understand it) but from a more robust source (not custom in-house code). Once we've got an understanding of the capabilities of the people using the EVE Launcher, as well as their inclination towards using peer-to-peer we can decide to go that route.

I guess I'll be the black sheep here, but I'm kind of disappointed with the changes away from BitTorrent.
Yes, there is a lot of people who wouldn't like to use it, yes there might be firewall issues (mostly for those playing at work... **trollface**), and it goes.
But one of the great things I like about the BitTorrent idea is the ability to hash files and the help to push great patches or things like that.
I've played other games that used the technology, and really it doesn't bother me at all.
Perhaps still implement it as an "option" for those who would like to use it?
But my main concern is the hash. I hoped that with the new launcher, in a way, you could use the protocol to keep the client running smoothly without the need of a repair tool.
Oh well, perhaps another time. =)
Looking forward to the new launcher nonetheless.

The implementation I believe will benefit you greatly. You can even take it further to optimization how I handle it on EVE-Files (having used torrent for a long time), my CDN automatically takes the requested file offline as long as there is X number of seeders available on the file, if the number drops below X it automatically takes the file online via the CDN again.
That way it is always ensured that a file will be available, but at the same time optimizing traffic (and costs) for files that need it more rather than shuffle out bandwidth where there isn't a big need.

Whilst pretty, the current launcher should allow an optional number of user/pass entry panels down the lefthand side. It should remember the last account names entered. It should also remember the last character used for each of those accounts and have a checkbox that allows you to skip the character selection screen.
When clicking 'Log In' it should launch n number of clients and log them all in.

Ok, let me start off as saying I am being completely serious. I know this will sound like a troll post but it is not.
I have thought about this and thought about this and can not for the life of me figure out this whole single sign on thing or the new launcher.
Can someone explain it to me, very simply, how it is useful to me as a player? Again I am not trying to troll or anything, there has to be some advantage or something I am not seeing. There might be a player base I don't know or understand. So seriously just trying to figure it out. I would love to give feedback on this to help my style of playing if I understand the intended player base for this change.
I mean I understand the old launcher, go check see if there is an update, if so update the game, if not well the whole reason I double clicked on you is to launch the game. That's it, no other reason. To me that's just simple and easy. It was nice, occasionally there would be an add or an announcement that was displayed nicely. Occasionally they would distract me but not often I just wanted to sign in and play the game.
Still that was too much for me I set up shortcut right to the client to bypass the launcher. Only time I used the launcher is if there was an update, I might use it couple time a month. This is way faster especially when you log into 4 accounts. Again, the whole purpose of me sitting down and clicking on the icon is to sign into the game.
So I updated the launcher last night, waited until the update finished. Man that took forever. I thought must be because first time launching. Closed it, relaunched it. The thing take 4-5 minutes to finish scanning or what ever it is doing before I can launch the game. So I close it and used my old fashioned short cut that launched the client directly. A clients pop right up ready for me to go play the game.
The launcher looks like it goes out and displays something from the web page. I didn't look at it, what ever it was it was way too busy. I went and surfed the web in a browser while waiting on the patching or what ever that scroll bar is doing at the bottom. It looked like it is displaying some news, really I was focused more on the progress bar, why does that take so long. I don't really need that, can we have an option to turn that off. I do go to the eve site and read the forums almost every day. There is honestly nothing earth shattering that I can't go a few days without reading. Again, just want to sign in and play the game at this point. I am committed, to playing the game at this point. Not reading the news on eve. This might be cool if we can customize it to show what we wanted. Like maybe pull in RSS feeds for devblogs or for certain forum threads we are interested in. I might sit there and give it a glance in the 4-5 minutes it takes to update. However still might just skip it all together by launching the client directly.
So now Single Sign on. I am not sure where the heck this used at. It is not really a single sign on? I think Single sign on and think I enter my account name and password and I can launch as any of my characters on any of my accounts. This would be useful to me, but this is not how it works Again. At this point all I am trying to do is get into the game and play. I am not trying to go read forums. I am not trying to update my account information from the web. I really just want to sign in and play the game. That's where everything happens, in the game.
So Last night I never even used the single sign on feature I admit. I still don't see the point. I log in every night to 4 accounts. When I sit down at the computer unless I am just going to put something in the training queue I just sign in every night to all 4 accounts. So again firing up the clients directly works great. It is fast and skips all the other stuff. So this single sign on thing I guess I really need explained to me. How does this benefit me the player? What is the player base that this is aimed at. I am trying to figure it out and be helpful. However for me I just am not finding any of this useful and more a hindrance of the whole goal of the launcher. To launch the game. |

is there a fix planned for people who use very long random passwords for muliple accounts and usually use cut and paste to log in via launcher? Not very user friendly at moment.

The launcher should remember passwords while it is open, and forget them all when closed. |

The new launcher seems nice. I have two suggestions:
1. make it remember authentication for a while - counting from when the client disconnects, when it connects 2. make it remember said authentication for multiple accounts simultaneously
(i have a difficult password :) Disclaimer: The above was probably written drunk or by a friend on my pc or a hacker. No warranty for any misinformation provided. |

I really miss the Eve Online Login screen. It really set the tone for each new release.
I don't particularly care that the launcher remembers my password (for the session).
Everything else about the launcher is a step back from what existed before, IMHO.
Now it's a static webpage type screen, full of Ads. If you wanted to more ads, then I guess you got what you asked for, but it looks like every other failed MMO now.
Really, Eve should still launch into the old Login Screen. I guess your committed to the stupid launcher, but maybe you can make the character select screen like the old login screen instead? |

Absolutely Agree,
CCP again loosing focus on the importance of game presence and impression for the majority for the sake of the minority convenience junkies; circa 'Incarna'?
I'm in IT, I get the purpose of the need for BT mechanics but CCP, don't lose site of the fact that EVE was always about awe and brilliance of its content. No other game presented such technically graphical brilliance or could show it so well with its awesome expansion theme boasting Login interfaces; and so many too.
Ask yourself this CCP; everywhere (Fanfest, EVE web, FB etc.) we're presented with a glimpse of Odessy - you've even updated your FB cover with it - but how the hell are you going to get the awesome sense of change that we're in the new expansion next week with a plain old launcher and no graphical Login UI ?? over to you. |

My biggest annoyance with the new launcher is that when using multiple accounts, it makes it so I have to reauthenticate when I switch characters on an account other than the last one I logged in to. This is a regression from the previous setup, as previously I had a "Logout" button from within the client that allowed me to swap characters without reauthenticating.
Possible fixes include:
- Adding character switch to the client
- Adding the ability to have multiple logins stored in the launcher simultaneously, and pick which to launch
- (Unlikely) enabling single credential signon to multiple accounts
I feel that given part of the purpose of this new launcher was to make life easier for people running multiple accounts, this should be a legitimate complaint and not just a feature request.
P.S. Sorry if this is the wrong thread, it's the only dev thread I could find on the topic that isn't locked, and this is starting to bother me. |

This is the only thread I could find about the new Launcher that wasn't locked; so was left with either posting here, or in the Odyssey Issues thread.
I experienced an issue today regarding downloading the new expansion. I run three different physical installations of EVE; one for each account.
The previous launcher would allow me to download a patch once, then export the file to be saved. Then, when starting the launcher for my next account (different EVE installation) the old launcher would first check (and use if found) to see if current patch had been exported. Made for patching multiple installations rather painless.
Today was not the case; I had to download the expansion 3 different times using the new launcher (868MB x 3) .
Yes, after my first download, I tried to export it. However, I got a message saying that the patch had already been saved.
2nd installation, after downloading a 2nd time I exported the file, and ignored the message, clicking yes to save the file.
3rd installation....still downloaded the complete file....again.
Was this intentional??? If not, could you please look into this and fix.

Would it be too much to ask to have account-based settings for display etc so you can use the launcher without having to use junctions to get each account set up where we want them to be ? |
