"Tell me a story, grandpa!" is something nobody says to me ever. But maybe one day someone will, and then I can just point them to the beautiful new website about the history of the EVE universe and go back to not being disturbed.
"What is this website?!" I hear you asking.
To find out more, please read the new dev blog by CCP Zulu and then give us your feedback right here in this thread.

I completely and totally love this idea! Eve has been needing ^^THIS^^ since it was originally created! I've always hated when I tried to get more in depth into the story of Eve how I had to dig, and search, and surf all over the place, and still felt like I was missing a lot! |

Looks great. Should be a much easier way to give someone some quick notes on New Eden's history.
I did however notice there's a rather large gap between YC12 and YC104. A the very least, the first time the empires grouped up to blow Sansha's Nation should be up there. Also noticed the Pirate factions don't feature other than the "Sansha's Nation returns" bit. I think they could use some love on the timeline. http://www.dust514.org - the unofficial forum for everything DUST 514 http://www.dust514base.com - the blog site with everything else DUST 514 you need

if we could contract/expand with the mouse wheel that would be better, also the maximum zoom could be a little bigger once player events are in there, since the event density will be high. |

I think the following player-made events should be represented on the timeline: - Major alliances born. - Major alliance dramas, big events (dig evenews24, they have a lot there) - "The disBand Of Brothers" - Asakai and similar battles - Re-unification of providence :) - Goon events (or sometimes the first from each series), such as burn jita, hulkageddon and suchlike stuff - GHSC's first heist that was even had an article in that wossname print - AT-stuff - When the players rebelled against walking in stations...
Basically make a damn history book :)
Apart from that, you could extend this idea. Having journalists that seek for player-made contents, and make press releases. Even on a regional, local, whatever basis. Currently some of the player organizations are having things like monthly newsletters and such, giving an overview on what's happening, the current state of the area, etc. Something more organized from CCPs side would be awesome.
I acknowledge your eve storyline articles and such, but personally i'd be more interested in reading real stories that happen, and not just stories, but small fewliner articles, saying what's happening near me, in my area. Something like a newspaper, you know. Currently we have a few blogs, evenew24 and some local stuff for alliances and federations, but nothing central, that's supported by CCP. Would be pretty much awesome to have, i think.

And yes, to echo someone else's comment, wiki links where they exist would be awesome.
On a side note, is there a unified art collection for all the artwork you guys have put out over the years? Definately, more info on all major events like this! |

Nice! Love it.
Small nitpick: "AD" comes before the year number, not after, so year dates ought to be written as AD 7987, AD 20544, etc.
Once this is fixed, my internal grammar **** will let me give it five out of five thumbs up. |

Hey all, glad people are generally liking this.
As I said in the blog, the intention is to include the relevant stories that get submitted to the true stories page, as well as some of the major "known" stories you guys listed above and incorporate those into this timeline. It'll all happen, just give it a bit of time :)
Also, wrt functionality, we'll be seeing how we can "fix" the scale since the whole "tens of thousands of years" between events thing breaks it a little :)
Cheers! |

I tried it briefly. The idea is great, but the implementation definitely needs more work. The gaps are so huge initially, that for a moment I thought you only had the first 2 events ready. On the other hand if you scale back the timeline, most events become overlapped in to a large blob of unorganized and unclickable mess. To go from a view, that shows the timeline clearly to a view where individual grouped events become clear takes a lot of clicking on the zoom buttons. It shouldn't take this much effort to use a simple timeline.
You really need to rethink how to more conveniently switch between closeup view and a timeline view. Consider having a constantly visible overview of the timeline at the bottom of the screen and have it be clickable. Hovering over it should show a zoomed view of that portion of the timeline and clicking on it should lock the view to that point and return to show it when the mouse cursor no longer hovers over the timeline.
It is an addition to the current timeline and it should always shows the entire timeline in a single screen. That way the user can constantly see where in the timeline the zoomed view is situated. It keeps the current large zoomed view in the middle of the screen, but gives the user the ability to quickly navigate and switch between the different view modes without losing our perspective where it all fits in the big picture. Easy for the user to navigate and understand and gets rid of the clickfests with the zoom buttons. |

When I was in the AJ project I took samples of life in W-space. I published 3 abstracts on it, all available as in-game items to anyone who visits Site One. As such the information in those abstracts I assume can be considered canon. One abstract found that life as we know it (That is, life from Earth) was introduced into W-space during the dark ages. So you could add:
Sometime in the dark ages: Life from the home world introduced to the planets in Anoikis (W-space).
Also for the AJ project itself:
The start of the Arek'Jaalan project.
The erection of Site One.

The link for the interactive timeline isn't working for me.
It either opens a blank page (IE) or a strange page that mostly redirects you to a bogus online market place (with Chrome). :S |

Hey, we're looking at the "weird/blank page opening up" issue, looks like it's due to DNS propagation. We're seeing if we can do anything to push it faster, but it will at least resolve itself soon. |

I learned a lot I didn't already know from looking at the timeline. This is a cool idea! Links from the descriptions of events to relevant pages in the EVE Wiki would be good.
Also, for ideas of other events to include, this would be a good place to start! |
