The first 30 seconds of this film are the best, I had goosebumps.
Apart from that, in true Final fantasy style, the storyline was confusing as hell. The fights were awesome, if slightly unrealistic...Reminds you of crouching tiger hidden dragon a bit.
They did their best I think, but no sequel to one of the best games IN HISTORY is ever going to live up to the original.
Better than spirits within? Discuss.

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 15/09/2005 15:58:43 Too much unrealistic action, no room to... breathe.
I prefer Japanese CGI movies that actually have something behind the surface, rather than a bunch of superficial action, shooting, and blowing crap up.
Better than Spirits Within? Anything is. Better than, say, Appleseed, a 2004 full-CGI film made in Japan? No way. -- Proud member of the [23].

The problem was they concentrated too much on the hardcore fans. I loved the game, played it several times done all the extra bits etc... and i still was confused as hell watching the movie. Theres a certain limit on how complicated you can do things and unless you've played the game fully and recently your going to spend half of the movie trying to remember things. Along with that the whole middle section of the film got almost to the point of boring even for myself.
Its for dedicated fans only, others will enjoy the awesome fight scenes but will sleep throught the story bits. I really wonder how they will make a profit from this tbh. ----- Eris Discordia; I think the proper term is <3

the plot is way too confusing for a mainstream audience (and probably loses FF fans along the way too) but I just couldn't help but love the moment when all the characters joined up to fight the Summons Monster. Awesome.
Here's a few screenies (may be spoilers)

well tbh i am a fanboy of FF and loved 7 a lot.
I think they did a great job for fans and i folled the story just fine and i was tired as all hell after a 12 hour work day. (it could of been my tiredness that helped me fill in the plot thouugh)
i just loved all the little things they did ex. after the tifa fight when they played the victory ff battle song and it ended up being the cell phone. god i lost my self on that.
over all technically i think it had some issues but i can over look them through my fan boy eyes. --------------------------------- What doesn't kill you makes you injured.

Did anyone notice all the red ribbons the ff7 team were wearing? Wonder what this is about.
I wish they showed some of the other characters a bit more in depth. Red XIII is awesome.

I liked the way that Red XIII has Cait Sith riding him
Indeed it is very anime in aspects, with the super-human-ness of the characters, but I don't care since i <3 FF -

I never understood why they made a X-2 and not a VII-2. Someone get a link here to the movie, you will be universally praised as a Net GOD for the rest of your life. Imho I want a FF fighting game with all the cool FF characters from 1 to present,I would love to fight Sephiroth and Aruon or Sephiroth and Kefka. If your a true FF fanboy you know a Kefka vs. Sephiroth fight would be the craziest **** anyone has ever seen. Seconded... nearly had me floored when not only they played it, but it had logical source, too... ^,^
(oh and plot was fine i think; throws you right in middle of things at first, but they explain it pretty much all as the story goes on...

Awesome. I loved it. I loved it to death
Reno's hair...Cloud's bike... Somehow it actually made some characters more palatable to me as well Didn't like Cid at all in the game but liked him in the movie, and Aeris didn't annoy me quite as much either.
It doesn't have time to put in the same amount of plot/character development etc into one and a half hours or so as you would in a game with 24 hours + (and god knows how many if you do it properly)...So no, I didn't really see it as a sequel to the game's plot. More like an add on
Some bits I really liked: (spoilers)
The ringtone scene. Very funny, and a nice touch.
Yuffie: Who's got my materia?! Tifa:...The bad guys! (or something like that)
Fighting Bahamut where each character propells Cloud further into the air. (including Aeris) Actually, all of Bahamut rocked, but that bit especially.
Pretty much any scene with Reno and Rude, especially the glasses. They are scene stealers. Liked them in the game too.
The phone (even tho maybe too much emphasis on mobile phones ) in the water showing all the messages Cloud recieved - Yuffie talking about the children in Wutai, and Reeve leaving a message - I liked that he was at least mentioned although we see Cait Sith on top of Red too
The Turks (I think) using some net gun thingy to catch Rufus. That looked so freaking awesome.
Zack and how he was used...I was like, ok, I know who that voice is, but who's that? Then when I saw him with Aeris I was like, aaah!
I liked all the scenes that reminded me sooo much of the game too. Like one of the last bike fights I think, when the bikes came close together reminded me of the mini game. And how, although no chocobos that I saw, one of the children had a stuffed moogle
Anyway...I could go on forever...Let's just say I liked it...Yeah

I didn't really like the new Appleseed movie. The animation was amazing, and it looked beautiful, but the story was barely existent. The first movie was so much better in that regard. And it had great animation.

It was really made for fans of FFVII...if you haven't played it, it won't make a lot of sense Most of the storyline is just a continuation of that.
...Go play it

I haven't seen the first movie... but I don't understand why anyone said there was a lack of story in the second. It seemed just fine to me, and in line with Shirow's other works.
Maybe it just seems lacking in comparison to the original, which I haven't seen. -- Proud member of the [23].

I was expecting sepiroth to be like 'meh, you killed me' or 'who are you??' to cloud. His character was so aloof in ff7.
The original music when he came back was making babies awesome

on the 2nd time watching it i also had time to notice some more subtle awesome genius. watch and u will see they set up a lot of shots to resemble game play.
high above shots with slight angle to see one side of mountains. main chars in forground with a big object/building/something in background. clouds room was another perfect example, simple room with a big hole in wall looking out to the landscape.
so much more to this for fans then anyone really appreciates i think.
oh and holy cow on the lighting, all the shots are lit just great. i forget i am watching cg at times (beside the chars are shaped weird) either looks really like traditional anime or somewhat realistic.
some bad things: animation for most the non fight scenes are a bit weak cloth on background chars all weak motion of the bikes seem to have no weight or physics to them.
all in all i still think this is up there for my fav CG/anime films right next to animatrix and wonderful days.

Well, I d/l'd and watched Appleseed today and it was pretty good. Some of the animation was really patchy though (although, I was amused to note the Japanese animators took every oppurtunity for a cleavage shot) but overall it was really good. Bit disappointed that Hades small handgun took out Briareos but hardly anything happened to him when the terrorist Land Mate smacked full into him a x mph and other inconcistencies with how tough the 'bots and people were etc.

I don't see how it is too difficult to follow the story, it is just not elaborated on like it is in the game.
The first 5 minutes of the movie lays out the entire plot of FF7 in mega-basic mode, the only parts that are left sketchy are zack's involvement (to people who haven't seen everything in the FF7 compilation) and aeris.
The fight scenes really are beautiful, some might say they are being overly unrealistic but I personally love them. The FF7 world is full of these little goofs (they ride giant chickens across OCEANS) and the movie followed through with it.
The only things I didn't like were barret's voice (too much grunting) and cait sith (I always hated that thing)
superb movie. I don't want to know how badly they will butcher the english dubbing, though.

Yeah I agree with above ^ All the character development and plot is already done...It's just building on the original story. Which is why you're going to get lost if you haven't played the game Otherwise the story is fairly easy to follow...
I actually liked how they did Barret...They un-Mr T'd him a bit and gave him more of his own character I thought...Plus his head isn't square anymore like it is in the game ^^;
And omigosh the characters have NOSES

so tell me why that i see this thread in the morning before exams, i go to work in the afternoon and on my boss's desk is a copy of this movie. so we procede to ignore customers and put the rip dvd in one of the laptops thats connected to our wall of lcds and procede to start watching the movie. the down side, it was in japanese and the subtitles were locked out so we couldnt understand what was going on other than some big monster was destroying stuff. btw the fight scene in the end was so much better than any other fight scene in any movie ever, this includes starwars.
