Can anyone recommend a good setup for a mining ship to a reasonable cost?

Cruiser best around is the Thorax. fix 5 decent miners and 10 harvies and rake the ore in. if ur at frigate level then the imicus is a good start. these r both Gallente ships. Amarr try the Tormentor for starting off with.

Aim for the ship with the most hard ports everytime. The probe is a good mining ship.
If u need a headstart and are anywhere near korama, i have many miner 1's left over from pirate drops and would b happy to donate:).
My corp is recruiting also and allways like to help new players, even ones who do not wish to join. message me ingame if u want any help:).
Eh!! i think if the guy could afford a thorox he wouldnt need to know cheap ways of fitting it out, so think hes just starting out:) and hes also stated that it was a noob mining ship(just thought id say this so no1 else makes the mistake of trying to help him with ships that are out of his range).

Edited by: Bane Sellante on 29/07/2003 11:48:58 If you want cheaper then an Imicus Frigate is what you want.
Hi Slot1: Miner 1 Laser Hi Slot2: Miner 1 Laser Mid Slot1: Civilian Shield Booster or Survey Scanner MId Slot2: Civilian Shield Booster Low Slot1: Cargo Bay Expander Low Slot2: Cargo Bay Expander
Drone Bay: Either 2xHarvestors and a Mining Drone or 5xMining Drones.
I believe that you can do something similar with a Probe.
Edit : The Imicus is a Gallante ship by the way so you will need the Gallante Frigate skill. ----------------------- Cold Fusion Inc. Website |

Edited by: Kalyessa on 29/07/2003 11:51:43 The Thorax is hardly a noob ship ;)
Try a Probe, thats a reasonable low level Miner with decent cargo space and you can even fit a mining drone on it. You're going to need Minmatar Frigate II for that. If you don't want to learn other race ships go with the Bantam (less cargo space, slower).
Standard setup for mining: as many miner 1 as you can, as many cargo expanders as you can, afterburners, maybe 1 shield boost (depending on the security zone you're in).
The next good Miner is the Caldari Osprey, but requires Caldari Cruiser I (and Caldari Frigate IV as a prerequisite) for it so if you work towards a Thorax, you might be better off with a low level Gallente Cruiser.
A good alternative is always to get yourself an Industrial ship and assist your corpmates with hauling ore to the Station. This would enable you to work directly towards a decent mining Cruiser, which (I have to agree with the previous post) is the Thorax.
Hope this helps a bit Kaly

Actually for an entry level mining cruiser, I would most recommend the Exequror from Gallente. It has the most turrets and drone space. _______________________________________________ "Is it me or the bad guys just getting totally pathetic?"---Clover, Totally Spies, "Hope is wasted on the Hopeless."---Mandy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Yep noob frigates are either :-
Probe, Imicus or Tormenter. Tormenter's got the smallest drone bay but if you can't use drones then that's not a problem... and even if you can you can still use 2 size 50sqm drones or a single harvester. You'll lose a little in mining speed but not huge amounts.
Two miner 1's is a must, as is a shield booster. if you want to deal with pirates too then you can use combat drones (couple fo warriers does fine in down to 0.6). Low slots fill with cargo expanders.
Cruisers best choice is the exequer initially - if your amarrian the omen's the best choice ( maller has one more turret but no drone space and 2 harvesters = a miner1). Not sure about the other two races for mining cruisers.

Edited by: Brock on 29/07/2003 15:20:54 If its money you are after, I really recommend you re-invest your initial chunks of money into a cheap indy ship ( Minmatar Hoarder's rule from a price to cargo size pov ). You'll be able to hold over 6000 cargo with a decent cargo expander or three and occasionally afk mine ore like Pyrox/Scordite. For a full cargo here you are looking at about 250,000 isk so you can see how quickly you will repay your investment and start making decent profit with little effort.
ONLY afk mine in 1.0 systems though where the police will descend on anyone messing with your ship whilst you are away like a ton of bricks. And there is always the remote possibility one of the better pirates might be able to pod you and still get away in time but no pain no gain eh?

All races have a class of noobie mining/transport/general purpose ships above the noobie ship.
Gallente - Navitas Amarr - Tormentor Caldari - Bantam Minmatar - Burst
Only two races have a more specialized mining/transport frigate above these, which is the Minmatar Probe and Gallente Imicus. These ships boast more cargo and drone space above the Navitas/Tormentor/Bantam/Burst group.
For a transport, the best there is for the price/performance is the Amarr Bestower, which is by far the most popular indy in the EVE universe. It can be flown at level 1, it has a huge base capacity of 3500, and it has more lo slots than any indy, which allows for a maximum of nearly 6500. A Bestower can be purchased for around 400k avg in Amarr space but it's a pretty widespread ship.

Well, actually the Iteron V, which very few people can fly, 'got 5 low slots. Max on a bestower is with amarr indy IV about 11274 cargo space (Amarr Indy IV, 4x28% cargo expanders). Not a very cheap setup, but hey, it works.
Got to think of the Astral Projection tune. |

check out our special offers... they might be right down your alley. (in-game url in signature)
Either way, its all about efficiency, all the above suggestions are 100% valid. Upping to a ship that can use 2 miner1s with a cargo hold bigger than 350 is a must, and should be done first. this lets you make money faster, so the second upgrade comes quicker.
2nd tier upgrades are more numerous. You could buy better, more expensive mining lasers, better drones and better cargo expanders. These let you make money faster again.
Alternativley, save and go striaght to a cruiser.
I personally would recommend increasing the quality of your kit before going to the cruiser, as it gives you more time to hone your skills and allow more time for you to get aquainted with the game and then you can make an informed decision about which cruiser to go for.
Hope this helps, Good Luck. ---------------- ~= Askari =~

IF you want a frigate that mines with three lasers, try the Punisher. With engineering 3 and electronics 3 and a coprocessor or 3 you can run three mining laser 1s or CuV. your cargo hold will fill fast so you must Stagger the laser activation and be ready for aerobic mousercise. you will fill a container 50% faster than any two laser ship not counting drone use. this is a cheap and easy safe space solution for mining with an indy to haul your ore.

Punisher is a terrible choice for mining... Really for all the reasons you mention. MUCH better is a proper mining frigate, the Tormenter, Imicus and probe can match or beat the rate of mining of a punisher with 2 or more drones operating without having to play musical ore. The Navitas can also but needs some tweaking to get enough power to run two mining lasers.
