These people are always the most isolated or insular in society i find. The same with most armchair hotshots.
Truly FDR was right when he said the only thing to fear is fear itself. 3 people dead is very low and a credit to the responders. How many people in boston were killed yesterday in car accidents?
Of course as Silens said a little bit more freedom will be sacrificed for security and its sad.
I live in a country that has been wracked by terrorism with suicide bombings but really it didnt change our lives. I wasnt here in the bad days of the early 2000s when buses and restaurants were exploding but the people managed to develop a strong skin and change their thinking that made most people very realistic.
Americas relative national naivety is both a great asset and a negative as then people go nuts over things like this and dont see themselves spiting themselves.
Honestly id like to take every armchair patton and give them a rifle and see how it feels to have a cold hard dose of reality. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Exactly. Dont bow down to terror and dont let fear run your life.
My mrs when she was in school missed her bus which was blown apart by a suicide bomber. You cant live in fear the whole time as that isnt living.
Life is short, enjoy it and live it well and dont worry about these kinds of things.
That said, reasonable precautions and common sense are a must. But its a fine line when emotions are running high like now. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Kirjava wrote:Civic duties noted to be learned from in this : First Aid is something that should be taught in schools and need to find a class for myself.
Great idea in theory, but its truly a case of too many cooks. Every person doing their conscription here learns basic first aid, and some learn more without being in the medical corps. But if the brown stuff hits the fan then deferring to qualified individuals who do it as a living is far more preferable to people without triage experience. Having the resources available through careful planning is far better than having "faith" that the average joe can respond, when he has not be trained for disaster triage or other cases such as this.
You can train civilians, which is all good, but unless they have the natural innate discipline to override the fight or flight instinct and not run, then its just wasted resources. Thats why governments spend so much time, energy and money in making young men and women learn to override it.
You can train a man to be a soldier, train him for 100 years, but until he has been tested in battle you will never know the quality of his mettle. Same thing with medics. I'd say that a good medic isnt made, they are born. Granted by exposing everyone to it, you may increase the general net number by finding those with untapped potential, but there are the others who will just get into the way, a la Peter Jackson in Family Guy when he learns CPR. It might be fictional but there are people that stupid / incompetent / plain up their own backside.
An effective system would need national service, which would be anathema to some in Western orientated individualistic societies. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Shame really. There really should be a gag order until a full investigation can be revealed. A free press is great, but being reckless in reporting that could turn violent is stupid. Same thing with suspected sex offenders, innocent til proven guilty doesnt seem to meet much anymore if theres a good scoop in it.

Sorry, but living in the middle east, you learn a fair bit around the motives / tactics of terrorism and this doesnt fit the mould. who knows how those mfker's think :/ As speculated by my mother: They may not have been prepared for the level of observation - the sheer numbers of cameras. It's possible they had no end-game plan, thought they'd just sit out the investigations anonymously, and have now panicked when they realized that they were found out so quickly.
That does sound likely if they are acting independently with no help from outside sources. They wont have planned ahead and are panicked. Kind of self defeating. Have been listening to BBC World News Hour on the way to work this AM. They spoke with the boys' uncle, who characterized the older suspect as a 'loser' - a dropout who was doing a whole lot of not much, despite having much potential. BBC's Russia Desk has spoken with the boy's father, who seems to have a lot of difficulty connecting teh younger boy to events in his mind. Apparently the younger brother was expected to be a real star. Both boys were into martial arts; wrestling and some form of Asian martial art. The younger is reported to have had a scholarship in wrestling. Other stories on the BBC include one about the man seen being hustled off in a wheelchair, both legs with rough dressings on; He lost both legs, but when he woke after surgery, he managed to request a pen and paper, wrote out an accurate description of one of the suspects. This was before the pictures had been released - and handed the description off to an FBI agent. Increasingly, the 'Columbine' angle seems to be accurate.
Thing is Boston news said that one of them was pretty popular and had many friends, they even interviews one of the friends.

From here. Dunno its validity but an interesting read.
Quote:Police have identified Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, as the "black hat" bombing suspect, killed during the manhunt that followed. Readers have pointed out that Johannes Hirn made Tsarnaev the subject of a photo essay, "Will Box for Passport," taken before the boxer competed at National Golden Gloves competition in Salt Lake City. The captions give us a micro-profile of the suspect.
Tamerlan, who studies at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston and wants to become an engineer, took the semester off from school to train for the competition. Tamerlan fled Chechnya with his family because of the conflict in the early 90s, and lived for years in Kazakhstan before getting to the United States as a refugee. Originally from Chechnya, but living in the United States since five years, Tamerlan says: "I don't have a single American friend, I don't understand them." If he wins enough fights... Tamerlan says he could be selected for the US Olympic team and be naturalized American. Unless his native Chechnya becomes independent, Tamerlan says he would rather compete for the United States than for Russia. Tamerlan says he doesn't drink or smoke anymore: "God said no alcohol." A muslim, he says: "There are no values anymore," and worries that "people can't control themselves." "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

I dont admit that everything is ok. I just wont let it rule my life.
There is only a limit you can take with security sweeps. Hundreds of attempts have been foiled globally since 9/11 and unknown numbers before. The few blips have been horrible but it is important that it is shown that they have no impact.
The biggest problem today in geopolitics is that the "war on terror" cannot be fought with armies. It should be fought with accountants. Follow the money to its source and neuter it and you curtail most of the worlds terror organisations as their members dont fight for free. Even suicide bombers get large endowments to their families.
But that would screw too much with the status quo.
But thats a topic for another day and another thread.

Actually, I *would* recommend pretty much something very close to exactly that. Living normally, and refusing to bend to these kinds of things is a great big F*SK YOU! to the people who do them - They want to make us change - Screw that! Common-sense actions and precautions that do not interfere with life as lived normally are fine. But panicking into making serious changes to our social structure and behavior is surrender. I frankly find the DHS to be one of the most humiliating defeats forced on us by terrorism. The Patriot Act is another. You cannot prevent whackos - they exist now, and always will, in every society, no matter what the precautions. But there are people out there who hate us simply for being us. The best way to stave them off whilst getting revenge on them is to keep on being what they hate.
I'm about to say something rather controversial, so before I continue I do not mean to insult anyone.
I think the fundamental difference we are seeing here in attitudes is that Silens and I are / were soldiers )for simplicities sake I know you were a squid), and to my knowledge Krix you've never been in the military.
Soldiers have to accept the risk of death as part of their job, a civilian does not. I do not want to diminish the risks that many civilians have dangerous jobs. The factory in Texas shows us this. But a soldier accepts this from the moment he takes his shilling. While you never think of it, you know that in the back of your mind it might well happen to you or "someone other than me, because im me". Its part of daily life, soldiers dont just die in battle, there are hundreds of ways to die a hundred miles away from the enemy. You develop a kind of fatalistic attitude that protects you from this. A civilian does not face this willingly have to put themselves into this situation.
Now, I'm not trying to say a soldier is better than a civilian, far from it. I've met many a man in uniform who I would happily describe as being scum, and unworthy of everything he stands for. A soldier is not braver than a civilian, the events of Boston this past week have shown to reinforce this. But the fundamental difference is a soldier knows, accepts and understands that death is likely.
I dont mean to not include all the other civil services such as the police force, fire, ambulance etc who put their lives on the line daily like the poor sob who was gunned down at MIT in his patrol car simply because of his uniform. Death is just as much a reality for them as it is for a soldier.
But a civilian can nurture a kind of naivety that is a wonderful thing. And when this is shattered it can be very difficult for it to be repaired and this is how things like the PATRIOT Act come about. A soldier even after he has left the service shall forever be a soldier, they can never have the wonderful gift that civilians have where they can settle down into their new lives. They know the world is a scary, nasty, dangerous place and have a kind of built in pessimism.
I dont see there being any kind of peace in my life. I hope there will be, I truly do. But I do not. A civilian can believe in the dream of peace around them and it is a great thing. It's not a case of ignorance is bliss, America is a safe country for the most part, and it is a safety that has been built by both civilians and soldiers. You should feel safe going to the threatre, the mall, the barber, the supermarket. the day civilians do not that is the day that soldiers know they have failed.
But as Jefferson said, he who would give up a little liberty for a little security, shall gain neither, and lose both.
In lieu of a better answer to the current challenges faced, it might be time to borrow a page from the UK during world war 2.
Keep calm and carry on.
As at the end of the day, panic, fear, and paranoia will do far more damage than any home made bomb or shooting ever could. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Sadly true - but not yet irreversable. In my 48 years, I have yet to see any genie go back into the bottle. Not once.
Depends on your thinking. But Communism is effectively dead. Thats been a massive rollback.
Go back in time to 1983 and tell someone that in 2013 Russia would be an Oligarchy with some of the worlds richest billionaires and China would be the worlds most dynamic and 2nd largest economy and they'd have laughed at you or had you committed.

Im not reading much tinfoil in this.
It could be a legit reason. We dont know how long it would have taken to scramble the chopper / crew readyness. They dont keep them airborne all the time after all. Could have been a shooting, not an APB, cant scramble the chopper for every single shooting.
I have no idea how big Boston PDs air wing is, but I dont think there is tin foil going on here.
Hindsight is always 20/20. It really could have been a case that when the police called in back up it was too late for the chopper to arrive. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Yes, but you cant stay airborne all the time. You have to stand down, change crews, refuel and maintenance. If Bostons wing is 1 chopper that leaves gaps. More likely it is 3+ but when you have police and FBI having manhood measuring contests and inter agency arguments and are frankly running around like a fly with a blue arse its hard to have perfect coordination.
Mistakes can, do and will happen.
If there is a more nefarious reasoning behind this, whoever ordered it better pray to god that another life isnt lost before the suspect is apprehended as if the truth is revealed whoever gave the order is going to have their arse in a sling. Obviously, these guys are not fully prepared for some reason, which I find strange. And strange that not one of the dozen officers had enough of a handle on the situation that a pursuit was not initiated.
This is all really hard to justify, and I'm finding it more and more suspicious.
I'm going to base this here for an air force take off of a 3 man chopper crew.
Expected time from alarm to take off is around 9 minutes.
1. Crew on standby.
2. Alarm sounds.
3. Time to run from waiting room to chopper. - 2 minutes
4. Crew reports to stations and board. - 1 minute.
5. Preflight checks. - 3 minutes
6. Control tower clearance. - 1 miunte.
7. Take off to desired altitude 1/2 minutes.
8. Expected time to target - indeterminate.
Thats 9 minutes from the call being placed to just getting airborne. Yes, they can be on standby at their chopper. But theyre human, not machines. They need to take a pee, drink / eat, stretch their legs.
The above is the expect take off time for a well drilled air force team, a police team might take longer.
9 minutes is a long time in a car chase. Think how far you could go in 9 minutes if you floored it on rather empty roads at night. If it is true he made it to Connecticut he could be anywhere now. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara
