In my almost 3 years of playing eve, I have many stories of people losing battleships and the like right in front of there very eyes while mining tired or something silly because they were not paying attention to there health.
I know somebody who was mining in a Raven, "thought" he clicked on armor repair when he was getting attacked by the 'annual' rats. Waiting for the rats to die he magicly poped.... he said you should have seen the look on his face (I know I would have liked to see it).
This could be prevented with a feature like "WARNING-HULL AT CRITICLE." If you are getting "HULL AT CRITICLE" warnings in missions and fleet battles the 'entire' time than I am sorry, you suck at pvp/pve *couph* Atma *couph*
Anyways this could be a very good feature IMHO ---[EVE ONLINE]--- ---[EVE ONLINE]--- ---[EVE ONLINE]--- |

Yea alarms or voice queues for being targeted, hit, shields pierced, armor pierced, hull critical are not only nice to have, they are absolutely neccesary imo

Yes, and we need more votes on this topic. Seriously are so few people needing an alarm on their ships?

EVE used to have an alarm whenever there was a threat nearby, be it an npc pirate or someone with low security. it was quite nice...kinda like a "bleep" sound. not annyoing, but enough to get your attention. id like to see this back.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of an alarm sound.
What this game needs is a whole list of options for -optional- alarm sounds.
I would also need an "Someone has entered Local" alarm sound for example.
I was npcing all alone in a remote 0.0 and got bored (c'mon npcing is pretty automatic if you have good skills) and started to answer questions on the Help channel to kill the boredom. That day a pirate came and tried (unsucessfully) to kill me. I had local window open as well, visible, right next to the Help Chat window, but I simply did not see it. You can't see all the time all the blimps on your screen.
I would have been toast if more pirates would have entered.
***
Alarms would have to be easily toggled on and off with keyboard shortcuts! I read that F-16 Fighter Pilots actually turn off or ignore many of the sounds they get, because it can be overwhelming as well.

this is a good idea perhaps "proximity alert" then "target has a lock on us" "suggest shield to be activated" etc. this would add some huge reality to the game. thumbs up for this idea

/signed, with big important-looking pen, megacyte-encrusted, zydrine based, with a touch of morphite here and there i love that idea, and if u can turn the volume of it loud enough, u could hear it from the loo/kitchen/wherever u are in the house.

good idea for optional alarm sounds about the 'entering local' alarm....gotta be careful...what if its on in a system like Jita? 'BEEPBEEPBEEPBEEPBEEP' all the ****** time but if ur in a 0.0 system, and the alarm rings, and u check the guy that warped in, and he's -5.0, then its handy, cause u can escape. of course, if he's in a HAC and ur in an osprey/barge, its gonna be painful if he finds u. (if ur in a system with no station, alone, ) -----------------------------------------------

Personally I'm a miner, but don't often AFK mine (beyond leaving the room for a short period of time to get a drink or the like). As it stands now I listen for the sound of my strip miners stopping to know that they have completed a mining cycle and that I need to start them up again, not by looking at my beams no longer lancing the sky. Also ships currently have a 'Asteroid Depleted' sound effect. Why have this? Its useful. But you can see the asteroid is gone anyway... but its useful!
I wholeheardtedly agree that audio cues are needed. I have sometimes wondered that with a supposedly sophisticated AI the only thing she can do is tell me that I'm on Autopilot (no really? I clicked the button didn't I?) or that I'm Docking (so thats what that large structure is that I'm approaching), amoung other equally limited audio cues. On the flipside I would LOVE to have a "You are under attack" audio cue. All it needs to be attached to is either (a) the first lock-on; or (b) the first hit or near miss.
I mean really, think about it if Eve were real and a miner was actually sitting at the controls of a mining barge. You really think the guy isn't going to doze? His ship tells him when the asteroid it is pounding depletes, why can't he expect it to tell him that he is going to die? Hell when mining I kick back and read a book, following audio cues to stop reading for a second.
Granted yes I can listen for the sounds of targetting or of gunfire, but I can also listen for the sound of warping through space without being told I'm about to do it :P
More sensible (but optional) audio cues are a MUST :)

Kilor, very good thoughts on the matter. Good work.
Any others who want their say? Those who are negative to the idea of alarms are also welcome.

I almost died recently since I was so keen on targetting NPCs, managing my weapons and their ranges that I missed my Shield Booster being off. They were a third through my armor until I noticed that something happened.
So: yes, please, add this.

More useful audio options in EVE would make playing it much better for everyone.

Today, Friday WE celebrate!
27 people have signed this so far, while 2 have been dissin the idea.
So this is VERY good, and shows that CCP might be willing to look into the idea if MORE people sign this thing.
Thank you, keep up the good work in supporting this great idea. !!!

Originally by: Silentblue1987 I support this alarm.. lost too many ships while reading the market, lol
I definitly hear that, lost my 3rd one this week while trying to gather market data and compair it with a spreadsheet, Come on Guys either give us this and we will slow down on the Whining for the Dual Monitor Support (STILL #1 ON MY LIST OF I WANTS!) Its not that I Ever go AFK but for some damn reason I don't have to because I'm tired of hearing the Roar of an engine, but would like it if the damn thing might give me "Pardon me Sir, But we are under attack" And be able to toggle it. Btw you want to stop AFK'ers start by Bait Buying from Ebay then kill the guy that sells to you. - Zarek

i like the idea too... mining is could be boring if you can't do anything beside. and window mode is ok, but if you haven't a very big monitor, it doesn't help alot.

Bring back the old threat warning box and all the cool noises that came with it.
Damn I miss that - used to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. ______________________________________________

One more /signed for this. I would like just a warning sound that repeats three times when initially locked, with the aforementioned idea of it not continously doing it, but only when its been a while since last hostile action towards ship.
A "Shield collapse imminent" vocalization for the computer voice (after you get a sexier voice:P), along with a "Armor plating failure" and "Hull breach in Progress" would make for far more interesting piloting failures.
Because in a tough fight, there just isn't anything other than an ever increasing field of red to tell you things are going badly. Hearing the computer tell you that things are going rather badly would add to the game (and remind some people to turn their armor tank on, lol). It would definitely make your last few moments that much more intense.

Couldnt think of a more simple and usefull idea. Nice thought Detshni!
By the way, as someone here already said - give options to disable the WOOOOOSHH warp sound, cause its boring, its very loud, and its ultra- UNREALISTIC AND ANTI-CLIMACTIC. ( seems like aircraft cutting through atmospehere... but in space? )

Oh and while we are talking about the absolute neccesity for more audio cues, how about different AI voices to choose from? Hell even Unreal Tournament lets you choose from a few different voices that mostly appeals to you.
But anyway... CCP? More audio cues please :)

It seems pretty moot at this point but I have to concur with an alarm, having just lost my Reaper on a routine jump to someone waiting to pick me off. By the time I had figured out the buzzing in the background was not part of the music I was already in a pod. A single beep would have done.
