I lost my covetor the other day. Killed off by NPC. Several days of mining, gone to waist, just because I didn't think I need to insure the covetor, mining in 0.5 security.
No wait, it wasn't the NPC's who actually finished me off. I had 9 drones in my bay, ready to do them in. So what killed me? I was at a website reading the news.
Stupid you might say? Probably. But why the frikkin hell isn't there a simple option in the game to make ships sound off an alarm if the shield takes a hit? Why?? It is so simple. If I heard the alarm, I would wake up from my slumber, reading about the Katrina victims, and come back to EvE get my drones out and finish em off.
Instead, no alarm, I forgot about EvE because I was so cought up in the Katrina thing.. And Boom.
I am not mining one more rock till this problem gets solved. We have fire alarms in our houses don't we? Mining is a tedious chore, and some of us tend to sleep by the keyboard. No, not AFK. SOK = Sleeping on Keyboard.
Can we have an alarm option, you don't have to use a new sound, just an old sound already in the game. But get it done, please. So I can get back to mining again, and going SOK, because I know that alarm is keeping me safe and sound.
Thank you.

Quite a good idea for us haulers on autopilot as well.
Or the "gurgling" female voice. <very inaudible>Your ship is under attack.</very inaudible>

Because the only thing that prevents you from killing a hauler is that he doesnt notice he's being targeted?
I would love to see more audio cues in eve. I play alot of flight simulators, and have grown acustomed to extremely distinct audio cues to warn me about things (loud BERERERERERERER when being targetted for example). such cues in eve would serve both to make the game more playable, and more exciting.
I can't see how an audio cue would give haulers an unfair advantage, perhaps you could elaborate while keeping in mind that such audio cues would be applied to every ship in the game.

There has been many a time when I have wished for 'Warning, Armour level low' or even worse 'Warning, Hull breach Imminent'.
It does seem odd that my computer is happy to chirp up when the Autopilot is engaged but keeps schtum when we are all about to die!
Definately a feature high on my wish list. |

I like the idea of more ship sounds. And as for your Atme, that a sad excuse for being sarcastic.

as said earlier, it doesn't have anything huge. Just so us who go SOK, NOT AFK, can at least get a warning.

Yea, and a script language so you can program your own actions and defence. If CCP put in a little effort, they could make us all redundant, and eventually there would be 15k of scripts running in the server, with little or no human iteraction
I think CCP should stay away from ANY features that makes the game easier to play for AFKers. Besides, if you surf pron and play at the same time, you can play in windowed mode, and move the EVE window to bottom so that your shield and armor is always visible.

I really feel that hte benefits of this would extend beyond afkers. Our brains are wired to react very rapidly to sudden noises. There's a reason why combat aircraft in RL use large numbers of distinct audio cues, and it's not so the pilot can read **** while flying. "Inattention blindness" is a real *****. You can miss visual cues even when you're paying total attention, audio cues are far harder to overlook. Adding more audio cues to eve would make combat better for both attackers and defenders.

I concurr
an -optional- alarm that can be toggled on and Off, and that is INDEPENDENT of the other sound effects (for I always play with sound off) would be highly desireable.
I dont want to hear whooshing warp sounds. (those need to be separately toggled off IMO) But I sure would like to hear if my ship gets attacked while I am elsewere brewing quickly a cup of tea.

They do have that puny little "dee-doot" sound when uor target by NPCs...may be fromplayers too. Anyway, all they need to do is increase the volume and extend the length of time it plays for. A nice computer verbal message would be nice. Something simple like "the ship is under attack" or "taking damage".

I for one, would find it extremly annoying if I got a 'ship is under attack' or 'taking damage' message blurting in my ear every time a shot was fired at me...
I also do not want to see them make this game MORE afkable... sorry, but we have enough problems with scripts and macros to make it harder for the GM's to pinpoint who is doing this.
it's good enough that u can train skills AFK, we do not need more.

More sounds are good. And sounds for logical things are even better, like your ship computer informing you you're being attacked. EVE has enough windows you can open at one time, and that you NEED to open at one time, that your screen can be completely cluttered so you don't see anything in space even when actively playing (market, wallet/orders, item infos, blah). Relying on purely visual signals to let you react is focusing too heavily on one of your senses. ______________ Join the Family |

Atma Darkwolf> please dude. Try to read some of the topic before you blurt out with something. We don't care if you disagree with the idea, because it can be turned on or off in the option's screen.

"blindness" to visual cues is a known and scientifically proven fact, especially if you're concentrating on something else at the time. There's a reason why audible alarms are generally attached to important and emergency events in RL.
Also, you'd need half-a-dozen eyes to focus everywhere on the screen you need to look at the same time. Audio cues for "under attack", "shields low", "armor low", "destruction imminent" would seem like logical additions. They wouldn't reduce player skill either - the skill is in knowing how to react to the warning, not in managing to extract the warning from the UI.
You can do anything. But you can't do everything. |

I might be supportive of a small flash that depending on the % of damge done(total % of ships HP including sheild, armor, struct) will flash brighter, and with more intensitty depending on the level of damage recived.
I am not sure about constant 'ship is under attack' messages since in large conflicts, or on missions against 30-50 ships, u are CONSTANTLY taking damage.
I might support a 'enemy is locking on' message when the FIRST enemy locks onto you (warning once, then if 2 min pass with no action, warnign will re-enable on the next lock on)
OR a ONE time dmaage warning with the above rules.. first time warning"Ship is under attack" which will NOT repeat untill there has been some time between the last defeated enemy(no conflicts) and the next time u recive damage.
Not sure, but a constant running report of all damage recived might drive me mad. (And if u can turn it off, what ELSE gets turned off with it? As it is eve's sounds are 'connected' so that turning off some effects turns off ALL effects.. I am with a past poster who would like to remove or reduce the volume of, the warpng effects without turning down the gunfire/explosions, etc.)

I said nothing about the warning sound being constant Atma. If CCP bothers, this can also be changed in the options screen.
But it is important that an alarm be implemented into the game. It is almost outragous that ships as high tech as those found in EvE doesn't have an alarm to wake up sleeping miners.
When hunting, you are on constant alert. But when mining, pirates may come, or pirates may not come at all. That is not the most important thing, the main focus then is in fact the mining. So to wake the miners up with an alarm sound should be mandatory.
Oh, and please don't make this alarm a module. That seems almost more stupid.

I thought targeting sound and beams/missiles hitting on your shield were fairly conspicious sounds :-/

I must have an odd system, because while I hear the gunshots, I have never heard a sound when someone targets me.

I think it would be cool.
Or an alarm when your ship is about to be blown up. "Alert! Alert! Hull critical" or something with another voice for each racial ship

Signed!
An alarm on the first time you get hit An alarm when armor breaks An alarm when you get hit in your structure
Actually the way it is right now is inbalanced, because when you get hit, shield tankers will activate their shields immediately, while armor tankers are often (check the pvp vids) to late, or to fast (to prevent forgetting it) with activating their armor tank cuz they're in battle, picking targets etc.
