I'm pretty impressed with a couple of those sites because of their use of Flash. Don't know it myself so I'm green with envy.
Here's a shameless plug for the site I've been working on. It's almost done, just haven't put in the content management yet. Omerta Syndicate
edit, oh btw, props to HG for the logo. Our corp still can't get over it.

Goddamn someone tell the creator of that flashsite to increase the framerate to like 30fps. The default 14fps makes any animation look like ass.
Noted and will tinker with it abit. When time allows. 
Btw I do think Oberon Inc.is the best for obvious reasons.
Although I got to give Omerta Syndicate their props for simplicity of design content and style.

Used dreamweaver and flash for this one... decided to use a frameset so that i could easily fit the forums in, and still maintain the alliance graphics throughout.

ye Oberon¦s is quite nice - like it for the RP-ish style and the functionality - but that color-scheme, that blue-to-violet, that¦s nothing for me, sry..
whereas that omerta-site has an awsome, stylish, very nice start-page. although u could work on the sub-menus, the text misses something, maybe small pictures, other fonts, a colored background - looks bit too plain to me - but as said i very much like that pictures as start-screen in combination with the screen-layout - nice.

As the man said, all you really need is a forum and maybe a splash page.
If you want a news portal, I'm a fan of subdreamder. There's a free version, and it looks a little nicer (IMHO) than phpNuke w/ less work. You can buy new skins (although if you're able, doing your own skin or reworking the default one shouldn't be an issue). You can have it up and configured in an afternoon, and plugs into most of the popular forums for a single login option.
