Fertilizer plants is basically a GIANT bomb waiting to go off. FULL of ammonium nitrate . Remember the federal building Oklahoma City bombing? That was only 1 truck 4,800 pounds (2,200 kg) of ANFO.
Now think of a ENTIRE FACTORY that make those stuff going off.
You get the picture. Its basically a MOAB with slow speed explosives . |

AMMN bombs are pretty harmless once it goes off.
3NH4NO3 + 2CH3NO2 -> 4N2 + 2CO2 + 9H2O
But the shockwave is going to cause EXTREME hemorrhaging and ruptured organs . (CLICK AT YOUR OWN RISK , thats a moderate to serious case, not going to post the serious cases) I can PM you the serious case if you desire oblivion
Here is a similar incident that happened in China back at 2001 |

i wonder what the payouts will be like.
that town i was in--it was caused by a ruptured rail car, so there was no explosion. took weeks for it to dissipate, though. depending on a resident's address, the rail company cut checks in the several hundred- to thousand dollar range (per household member).
looking back, that was definitely not enough
extremely close houses were rebuilt. it soaked into the walls and things EDM? you mean EFM |

Its going to be one hell of a negligence case if it was an accident . One hell of a criminal case if it was Christian extremists. One hell of a war if its North Koreas. One hell of nothing if it was aimed at Obama . |

Texas has a track record for bad health and safety standards being enforced, in part because of "its government" and part because its Texan capitalism at work. Bruntsfield Oil Refinery was systemic in nature due to not following regulations and keeping sufficient manpower on site (the supervisor at the time had been working every day for 30 days).
This is just a bad coincidence that it happened the same week as Boston.
Also, is CNN a sensationalist news channel in the US? the casualties have been revised down across the board as it seems they were misconstruing the numbers.

Initial death counts are wildly over-stated, it seems. CNN is now reporting 5 to 15.
These kinds of events happen about once every ten years or so - There's a reason these plants are built way the hell out in the middle of nowhere: Fertilizer plants, grain silos, refineries, rocket fuel plants, explosives plants, and such like are all potential WMDs.
We had a fireworks factory go up in the town where I grew up - happend two years before I was born, and people are still talking about the blast - It was fifty years before anyone would build on the site. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

I bet it was a hell of a show Situated on the top of the bluff above town - far enough over the crest that you can't see it from town - Apparently, according to the folks I know who are old enough to remeber directly, very little came out of the blast except the shockwave. Whatever went off, the blast front was energetic enough to pulverise and consume everything involved. Relatively few fatalities: The owner, who had to be identified by his personal effects, and a woman who had a heart attack.
The plant was well-layed out, with all operations in small, seperated buildings with only three or four workers per structure. 63 workers fled, with only a few workers injured. The site was flattened though, and burned for a long time. Substantial damage to nearest structures and homes too, despite the good siting and stand-off distance. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.
