Two Step (CSM Chap) posted on Twitter today a link to a Business Week article about the CSM http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-04-18/multiplayer-game-eve-online-cultivates-a-most-devoted-following#p1
On page two they refer to POS as Space Houses, and it got me thinking, how do you describe what you do in Eve to people around you?
For instance I once described the Pod system to my girlfriend as i was the inside of an egg, and thats my shell.

I'd rather explain the Pods to be like the habitats of people in Matrix. I guess even the "average" girlfriend knows that movie.
Usually I don't explain EVE to others, because you can't explain the depth and nuances of the game anyway. They should rather try it and see if it's for them.
When my girlfriend watches me PVE or PVP I can't even really explain what she sees there, in a way that gets her interested. I even tried with Kil2 videos and let him explain, but that also only works for people who already know some aspects of the game.

Pretty much this. The people I work with would never understand, they are all "soap operas are the pinnacle of audio visual entertainment" types.
My friends outside of work, most of them have played EvE at some point anyway.
EvE was brought up at work once, when Vile Rat was murdered and it was all over the news. They were all amazed that I knew about him just because we played the same gameGǪ. Weird people muggles.

I just accepted that Eve will never be our (wifey and I) thing, I will forever be alone in struggles among stars.
Funny thing is that when I started to play Eve my wife saw one of rat's haulers in some mission and she asked "Why are you shooting this vacuum cleaner?". It stuck and now my Eve time is my "vacuum cleaner time" which in fact confuses begeezus out of friends and family who are not aware of real meaning of that phrase and they hear I did it whole night. My partner doesn't understand the game at all and she justs let's me get along with it now, but to friends I show them the old learning curve graph and ridicule how wow and other mmos are all safe and easy whilst in eve people will kill you on sight; most react by asking why I would play a game like that.. I often respond with "because I like to be the one upsetting and making people cry" . Eve is no ordinary game it's a life style choice for me. |

Good article.
As for explaining, merely saying it's a game I play. Should anyone be interested further I'd try to explain it in a way possible - which by the way is pretty hard since it's a pretty complex universe we got here.
But the use of 'sandbox' is a great word to use.

I explained eve, from my point of view, to my father recently... " it's a sandbox game/universe all on the same server. You can get away with almost anything from robbing people, tricking them into giving you all their stuff and so on. There's non consentual pvp so you can ambush people that are just minding their own business. You can set up your group in a way that gives you an unfair advantage over smaller groups so they can't do anything to you, ransom them and kill them anyways..."

I don't actually call EVE a game anymore... I call it a hobby. The main reason is because I've spent sooo much money on it over the last 10 years that if I DIDN'T call it a hobby I'd feel like I wasted it all... but I definitely haven't. Calling it a hobby also frames it differently for other people, so they don't jump to dismiss it right away.
I also tend to describe it as a "sandbox" where almost anything goes, and I explain how I more or less live to ruin everyone else's day. Like how I sit and wait for people to travel by me and blow them up, kill them, steal their goodies and then sell it. Most people get a kick out of that.
I do think calling it a hobby is important though; it's just a better explanation for the role it plays in my life as opposed to a game. Being called a hobby implies I have some value and interest in continuing to do it, whereas a game is generally regarded as a waste of time or mindless temporary entertainment, like a movie. |

"It's this open world where you have space ships, and there's a whole big society with 35,000 people in it at a time. And most of them are pretty smart and math nerd-oriented, because it's a really complex game. The average player age is supposed to be 28, but there are a lot of old dads playing it just as hardcore as anybody. So the players are pretty sophisticated-- not kids swinging cartoon swords. And anybody can kill you, but there are some safer areas than others. You're always looking for more money and better stuff, so you have the edge. There's a whole ultra-capitalist market economy where you can invest and make big money, or mess up and lose it all. And you can get scammed.

To the other people living in the dark ages I just tell them it's a computer game with spaceships. I usually leave out the online aspect as that just confuses them.

To the few gamer friends I have I explain EVE as a space version of pre-Trammel Ultima Online... on crack.
To your average gentile I explain that EVE is basically a dystopia... with heavy influences from the 'old wild west' and 19th century 'Robber Baron' period... with spaceships, immortality, and [more or less] legalized murder." Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Let me tell you a little story.
My wife is pregnant with our fifth child, she craves the attention of her husband knowing soon that we will once again be blessed with the progeny of my great loins. She came to me last night, the pregnancy barely showing, glowing in the moonlight on our terrace as I sat enjoying a glass of wine and camping a gate in my stealth bomber.
"I wish you would stop playing this stupid game, we're going to have another child soon." she said. And I was aghast. Did she not understand that I was already doing all I could to ensure that the child would have a solid future. In spaceships? Clearly this was my fault. I hadn't talked with her about the dire import of the work I was doing.
With heavy heart, having hoped to postpone this talk about how the galaxy was filled with the lowest of the low I pulled up the Galactic Map and began to explain the realities of why I had to continue the fight.
"This is a map of the great players in spaceships. Some day our son will inherit all I conquer. But the universe is untidy. It has undesirable elements within it."
My hands waved lightly over the eastern side of the map.
"Here are the Russians. The communists that saint Regan slayed in his mighty crusades of the 1980's, no longer able to propagate their foul communist propaganda in the real world due to the death of Joseph Stalin in 1989 they have retreated to spaceships in an attempt to corrupt our youth."
My hand graced to the south of the map, hovering over Providence
"And here we have... roleplayers. People who fly spaceships only as an ancillary to their foul pursuits. Only in this region will you find a space captain who his a hermaphroditic wolf taur tigershark hybrid."
She gasped, she had been on the internet, she knew what dark secrets lay in the south.
"That's right. Furries."
My hand creeped over to the east of the map
"And here, here we find the worst of them all. Mens Rights Activists. Pony worshipers. Paedophiles."
This time she found her voice...
"Redditors"
I nodded before continuing.
"So I take offense that you view this as me simply playing a video game... I am not merely eating dots in a line, I am not jumping on mushrooms. My spaceship is a firey sword sent to wipe the unclean from the galaxy, and I wil...."
I was interrupted by a knock at the door...
"The pizza guy is here."

"And here we have... roleplayers. People who fly spaceships only as an ancillary to their foul pursuits. Only in this region will you find a space captain who his a hermaphroditic wolf taur tigershark hybrid."

Q: How do you explain EvE to friends and family
A: Spreadsheets in space populated mostly by neckbeards that consider a computer game to be brutal. Two of the defining characteristics of a carebear are wanting other players to play the way the carebear wants and whining on the forums for the game to change when they don't. Yet I see more threads on these forums from gankers than I do miners whining about wanting the game changed to suit them. |

With people who don't play games much, I've had pretty good luck starting out with what business publications say about EVE, such as having a stable playerbase for ten years. That piques their interest a touch. Then I explain how it's really cutthroat but very satisfying when you can do something right, and it has staked out a niche but intense following because it has a unique feel. Also spaceships.
People who do play games a lot, I have found, are even more prejudiced and don't even let me get that far. They jump right to bad second-hand experiences and being too tough to get into.

seriously, do it. Make it part of a prenup. that feeling will change in less than 1 month as she's looking at a stinky pile of dirty dishes and you've got a headset on spinning a spaceship in station. |

My mum is at a respectable age (80+) and since she's not as mobile as she used to be I go there a lot to help out with shopping, cleaning, etc. Because I spend a lot of time at her place I convinced here to get internet, even though she doesn't fully understand the concept.
So, one day I was playing eve at her computer and, because I was in a roam, TS was on as well. When she walked by, she looked at the screen, and listened to the voices and said:
"Oooo, do these voices come out of space?"
And me, not knowing how to even begin explaining, chose the easy way out and said:
"yes, they do!"

We talk ships, fittings, coming expansions to EVE, funny stuff on the forums.

I've tried a few times and succeeded once or twice, but only my uncle took to Eve in any big way. Sadly no longer playing due to more pressing matters related to cancer treatment and the withholding of his disability allowance; but that's a different topic.
I've made a revelation when it comes to describing Eve to non-Eve people and it should work on gamers and non-gamers.
"Next time someone asks me about Eve Online I will tell them it's about creating content for yourself and other people. The game would be nothing without other players."
http://www.minerbumping.com/2013/04/the-duel-that-was-part-2.html#comment-form
The above post can be found in relation to a story on the minerbumping.com website. If anyone wants to know what Eve is about, showing them that site and then the Eve survival website should show all that needs to be shown.
tl dr: The game is dull and unimaginative; the players are not*.
