Argh! Its the last straw really! Last week my AMD based system started recordign post 60 deg (140f) temperatures. I have installed new heat sinks, tried everything and now whenever I boot my windows machine I have to point a desk fan at it to keep it from bloody melting. I have had the same problems with intel CPUs. But the really only aggrivating thing is that I ONLY use my PC for EVE.
When Mac OS X went from being a cheese OS to being Unix underneath and slick UI on top, I switched for every business application that I have (and Im a software architect, not your run of the mill email family user). Now I only play one game on the windows system, namely Eve. I cant do this anymore or it will blow up and Im not pouring another 400euro into the most likely faulty CPU on a computer I hate.
So I guess that means that I wont be renewing my three accounts until they port Eve to OS X. Sorry CCP but Im sick of Windows. More and more game companies are realizing the benefit of moving to OS X as well as windows and there are big studios such as Epic publishing for both.
If Eve is architected well, you shouod be able to port he rasterizing layer to OpenGL and build on mac. Until then Sionara. Good game, crapppy platform.

it does'nt cost 400 euro for a new cpu unless you insist on getting a top of the line one.

If they wrote it right, and lets assume that they did, there will be an API level that is a Rasterizer; this is the gizmo that uses DirectX and they would have to rewrite that layer keeping the API the same but implementing it with OpenGL.
On the other hand if they didnt architect it correctly, it might very well be impossible and I will have given CCP my last Euro. Such a shame for the best MMOG out there.

I read it. I'm saying, how many times are you going to post that "bah, I'm leaving!".
Can this be the last one?

Well, the fact is that I havent Quit before. I stopped playing a while because I got a newborn daughter and was too busy. Now things are quieter.
And why the heck do you care if I quit 40 times and come back 41 times? Are you the doorman or something?

From what I have read before from dev posts on this topic, the difficulty is not porting the graphics to another system, but the network and patching tools they use within directx 9.0... though I would like to see a OpenGL soulution I believe they would have to rewrite a larger bit of code then you might think, eve is the only thing that keeps me from switching off windows atm too.

If CCP were to port it to OpenGL for MAC OSX then they could do a port to linux while they're at it
I don't really know if the effort and associated costs required to port EVE to other operating systems could be financially justified if you were to consider the number of *new* accounts it *might* bring.
Sure, for those that use other OSs and only have Windows for gaming and like the OP only for for EVE it would be nice, but we are already customers. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein |

Well World of Warcraft has a Mac OS X version so Id say there was financial reasons for it. Blizzard is not known for doing things randomly. I dont like their game much but they are a very savvy company.

Hah. Sure, doorman it is.
I feel compelled to point out to people who have never heard of you before and are new to the game, browsing these forums and wondering if they should convert from trial that you are a wishy wash who does this all the time.
Cheers!

And OpenGL is SOOO much faster and less buggy than DirectX anyway. I work with both of them and the DirectX API is like most windowns APIs. To put it in layman's metaphorical terms, imagine a 15 year old that hasnt cleaned his room in 15 years and you have DirectX. Any API where a company makes millions off tutorial seminars has something SERIOUSLY wrong with it. --------- The words "Exciting" and "Safe" are mutually exclusive; pick one.

Linux is a *bit* more used than OS X. I'd like to see a port there first, tbh.
The problem with porting EVE in the first place though is DirectX. EVE is based on it, and porting to OpenGL can take quite a while..... However, i think it will be worth it if CCP does that.

Edited by: Unknown Subject on 24/09/2005 19:12:49 either you are not installing your cpu properly (you DO use top of the range thermal paste right?) or your motherboard sensor for cpu temp is broken. i had a board like that once. said the cpu ran at 90 degrees but it was barely warm to the touch and never failed. buy yourself a decent cpu fan, one without a cooling deadzone (center of the fan with no airflow). something like a coolmaster.
eve is not so cpu intensive it will melt your machine. you are simply going wrong somewhere hardware wise.

I dont know why your comp is burning up, but seems like some kinda prob with how its setup. I use a AMD 64, with a GeForce FX 6600, 2 Gb RAM, buncha other stuff, in a case with about 3 fans. I live in Dubai and leave my comp on all the time. Also the airconditioning is never on in teh mroning since I'm at work. Outside temperature reaches more than 45 degree centigarde on a daily basis and I am yet to have any problems with my hardware.
It must be sumin to do with the way your hardware is setup or a fan fault.

I initially bought a Powerbook as I worked in a PC support center and got tired of looking at broken Windows machines.
Not to start the Mac vs. Windows debate . . . but it rocks . . . hard.
The G4 weeps for an EVE client.
I'll be happy to alpha/beta test it for CCP.

Yeah, I have a windows boot just for Eve and CS these days, and HL/CS can be run ok on linux, so a port would be nice.
The problem is I think that CCP went all out with DX and windows (I think directplay may even get used ). The wierd choice to use windows for the server also points to some deal with MS, or mental health problems, either of which may restrict the options .
With the PS3 comming with an option of a hard disk and Linux install they may be a big growth in gamers using linux on suitable hardware so maybe....

Take your PC apart, clean out the crap, buy some thermal paste and a better CPU fan, reassemble.
I run 3 accounts and my CPU temperature dropped from 170 to 110 degrees farenheit after do that.

Well I guess you won't be playing Eve then. There is no reason why your processor should be overheating like that unless you don't have the proper cooling capabilities. They even come with the proper cooling system, so there is something else up.
