Yes and no.
I suppose it's true to a degree. My own reaction to the animation was "Nice...and?" Because after all this is just an animation. They didn't really do anything earth-shattering. All they did was hide the loading bar, and show you an animation while the game still does same old stuff in the background. It's just eye candy, it's not even quality of life improvement. A placebo if you will. Some game developers tweak/change animations in their MMOs and it doesn't even end up in the bloody patch notes, never mind at a keynote presentation on a 10-year anniversary of the game's launch. Off the top of my head I can remember three MMOs where some major eye candy was added, and it was never even in patch notes because it was considered to be such a minor change as to not even be worth mentioning.
So, EVE players complain too much? As far as I'm concerned, they don't complain nearly enough. In fact, they're easily distracted by shiny objects. Ork crush, ork smash....oooh, shiney... |

So, Jame; CCP isn't supposed to be trying to make the game more immersive...?
To me, that's the win. Anything that makes EVE more immersive, more engaging to experience, will increase initial subscriber retention. \o/ |

We also did a LOT of optimisation on how the client unloads and reloads assets on jumping. So not only is it pretty, it's less load :) The new effect is nice and all, but during a long trip it sure seems like it would get disorienting and repetitive. An option to turn it off (and replace with a simple black screen) would be very welcome. I also have some concerns about load time in high-lag situations, but too early to tell Christ, there's always one, isn't there?
Heh! Deus EX:HR the expansion pack (missing link) has an animated load screen (you can even turn around in it) between 2 different places of the game. One of the first questions I ran into on the internet trying to figure something out myself was, "how do I turn this off?"
So yes, there's always, at least one. :P /o\ |

One of the things many say about Eve when I say it's all on a single server is, "yeah well, you only load different instances all the time". This completely removes that feeling. It makes eve so much more seem like one big place. The added immersion this creates is huge! |

It will most likely not stutter more. The loading bar is just hidden behind the graphics and it will seemingly be a shorter transition than with the loading bar. Bj++rn Jacobsen | Audio Designer | EVE Online, CCP Games | Anything sound related, ask away. |

Thanks. All the work you have seen so far is work in progress, but it will be darker and "heavier" than previous jumpgates, though the actual jumpgate sound will be the same. Still tweaking on this. Bj++rn Jacobsen | Audio Designer | EVE Online, CCP Games | Anything sound related, ask away. |

One thing I noticed in one presentation that the camera and the tunnel zoom don't necessarily point in the same direction as the gate does. Did I see that correctly? And if yes, will it get adjusted in the release? Sovereignty and Population Moulds and water for the sandbox. |

I agree with Aprudena. I mean, any kind of loading is going to be immersion breaking and maybe crash people's computers. You could just take all the jumpgates out. Eve could be set in one system. This would free up lots of server processing stuff so that system would work REALLY well. You could also get rid of textures on ships. You hardly ever see ships close up, so why use up people's memory for something that's hardly ever seen? In fact, if you have those little boxes and things around ships, it would be good game design to remove ship models. You don't need them if you have icons. It's called OPTIMISATION. I thought you devs would have heard of it. While I'm on a roll here, you should also think about making the game 2D. I know people will be going "but space is 3d lol" but you could make it like Dwarf Fortress, where you click buttons to go up and down levels. As it is, you're putting unnecessary things into the game that will just make people computers break. |

As opposed to looking at load bar after load bar? I'll take this. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.
