I was gonna reply to shins post but I really cant be bothered.
You should read the patch notes my friend, you warp in on a camped gate with a large fleet and try to attack m0o, and it will not be m0o who are unable to leave.
And since we seem to be one of the few corps that posses the AWARENESS OF YOUR LOCAL LIST hack/cheat/exploit, this should be good for us :-P
OMG OMG OMG i rock!

I am people too :(
We have lived in Stain since release, so if anyone is a native of Stain we are.
Typical, you rich Empire people want to come an kill us because we live where the things you want are - and you not only want to take it all for yourselves - but will blame us because we exist!
When will you realise we are harmless, and spend out time conserving the Asteroid Belts, and trying to live in harmony with the universe?
Life in 0.0 systems is so cruel :)

I think there's a risk that alliances controlling all low sec space areas with bases could asphyxiate the game at some point.

Small corps could stake a claim to a small part of 0.0 space but it would take more effort than most people are willing to put into it. You also run into the problem of who is in charge where the package challenged try to run everything just the way they want it. The it turns into just another tin pot allaince. That said I'm up for trying if any other groups are interested...at least it would look like content.

Yes but...
At this step of the game I think you can still try, but don't forget that more than the number of battleships and qualified pilots the alliance own, they got a more powerfull ally helping them... CCP !
The fact you can not rent any office in those bases anymore, make so that even if you would make it to take a valuable system with bases from them, you still won't be able to install your own base of operations there.
Another problem is resources.
They got the Bistot at the door step, and the 50k pirates, they can make 20x more megacyte in the same time as anyone in empire space, and 10x more than someone who need to make 60 jumps from the nearest spot to mine bistot and who need to go trough pirate blockades etc...
In a RTS, usualy once your enemy got the control of the major resources on the map, you can assume the game is lost.
Problem, is that in a MMORPG, the game is persistent, usualy the people who "lose", stop playing in frustration.
I got rumors from some friends playing SB on the US server, that this is one of the things actualy killing shadowbane apart from the bugs.
Once 3 or 4 mega guilds take the control of all the good hunting spots, and all the resources (disc runes drop spot p.ex.), they hold the game, and once the "challengers" have finally understood they have been beaten out, they got no choice to wait till the "winners" get bored too and free the spots, or quit the game, thus letting a new game start, and the cycle continue.
No need to say that when the game come to this step, what is left as playerbase is a handfull of powerplayers, since all content is owned by the dominant guilds...
In EQ such a problem appeared for a while, even on non PvP servers, where the dominant guild hog a vital quest mob, just to refrain others to climb a important step (like camping and killing every dragon dropping the sleepers tomb key), but since EQ is not PvP, and have a VERY large content choice, that never pushed the casual players out of the game. Disclaimer: Rereading my post, I sound like preaching the apocalypse, and Eve is FAR away from reaching this point, or maybe am I wrong and everything will ballance by itself, future will tell.
So, no panic, I am a pessimist usualy, but it helps sometimes, since the sky is alway more blue than I expect it to be at the end :)

Would vomiting in space and the loss of gravity stop or increase the amount of carrot regurgitated ????
No matter how long it has been since you have eaten carrot. It always appears.

The game would be so boring if all you had was 4 NPC empires that never did anything and everybody else either mined or priated.
Just look a the recent events with fountain alliance. You had a civil war, then merging and invasion of priates all in a weeks time. Do you think you will ever see the Caldari and Gallent states go war? Will you get this kind of content from NPCs? No. Its us the players who add this richness to the game.
CCP always meant for corps to "lay claim" to outer rim. Thats why they plan to put in stations, turrets, defensive fields, NPC drone fleets that patrol your system. All this is meant to allow corps to "Lay claim" and hold territory. They didn't put in 5000 systems so you could mine/priate all day long. Its there for you to TAKE.
Not every Joe blue in a 10 man corp should be able to go out and mine bist, its not realistic. For the health of the game there should be an "upper class" "middle class" and "the poor" just like you need such in real life. There should be corps at the top, then middle then bottom. Each helping and using one another for their own benefit.
My corp for example is so busy in fountain now that we don't mine basics. We use the profits from mining bist to buy all our low ends. We buy 40mil tritanium at a time paying up to 80mil isk for it (same for other basics). We help fund a middle layer corp which in turn is able to buy battleships with the profits. This is *exactly* how the economy in eve should funtion. This is how the real world economy works. This is realistic and true to the game, corps working together to meet their different needs.
Now I agree it is kinda silly to see entire regions being cut off and laid claim to. This is more a product of CCP's failor to put in stations, turrets, drone guards and etc. Had these things been in at the start you would have seen corps laying claim to systems. Likely building a nice station in a system with 23 fields full of bist. Turrets at jump gates and NPC drone guards shoting any ship not on a safe list. Priates or corps going in to destory their refinary stations and etc during a war to cause *real damage* (not the go in, kill a cruise and hide in a station crap).
Sadly this hasn't been put in so the next best thing is these 20 region region wide alliances. This too will come to pass as CCP moves forward with their plans.

mm'kay
Im fine with this alliance thing, looking after their plot blah blah blah , it's giving the game some excitement tbh
My idea of a pirate would be someone who roams around robbing people and killing them if they dont do what they want. Im finding it slightly strange that some pirate corps put on comfy slippers, make some cocoa and settle down in a region joining other non pirate corps in the protection of their land. Someone has already said it - this is hired hands/mercs not pirating imho.....
I understand that alliances want to protect high level ores and high level rat loot from being raped by all and sundry but it appears that corps with say 5 members are shot on sight for the ooohh masses of rocks they will deplete and the millions of rats they will kill. A blind eye seems to be turned towards the larger corps who might join to swell the ranks but meanwhile they deplete your precious fields and slay countless spawns of your lovely rats and then leave ya !
Theres a line that would be nice to have so that the smaller corps (that let's be honest will never overtake the current biggies) can at least sample the delights that these larger corps/alliances are protecting.
I was in catch tonight and was asked for 20mil to stay there or die, me and 1 of my clan were killin rats....we werent even touching the endless rocks of crokite (hed-sg for those interested ) so my buddy was pk'd cos tbh 'rancid milk' can shove his 20mil. Ill go where i want when i want as long as i can get through the gate
We all play our own game and im glad we have pirate corps in eve .... i like reading about the battles .... i even think that 'stav' is a funny guy OMG OMG and he should post more than he is doing but the smaller corps should be given a longer leash or at least entrance/exit fees are charged according to corp stature.... what harm would this cause ?
