Hi,
Don't know somebody posted this before but this are my ideas;
artillery support ships with a new weapon type park this ship outside the battle or gate. you can set range on it (new weapon) lets say 150 km/200km/250km or whatever and clicking with your mouse you point firedirection it will fire (can't lock ships). They will hit just like smartbombs do if you get lucky you get a direct hit or in battle you may hit a friendly. Just for levelling the battle field like irl artillery.
Second thought;
Space craft carriers; Works something like a flying spacestations but only with the capability of repairing ships and fitting ships and carrying ammo and new ships. This way all out fleetbattles can last longer and in deeper enemy space. Only defence will be drones. If the pilot of this vessel logged out of the game the pilots docked will be ejected.
what you think?

The idea sounds neat imo ;)

Artillery support would be nice, maybe if target painter was used by a support frig/cruiser(virgil, bellacose) to paint the targets that the artillery ship could shoot at?.

Thanx for the replies but Dr Happy what i ment by artillery is not what i have seen ingame yet. I mean a is a cruisersized vessel shooting massive projectiles into the battlefield without the capablity of locking ships. So a direct hit will be luck. It has a verry long range so you can deploy far away from the battlefield and the defence of thise vessels must be poor and 1 vs 1 it will probably loose against any ship. This must be a support ship for battles and defendng your homebase in 0.0.
Cheers,
Jan

Interesting ideas,
The artillery support ships sound fun and I like the idea of not being able to lock and hitting being lucky otherwise this could be easily used to camp, sound a bit like flack cannons. Would all the races have the same type of ammo and guns though, and would ship designs be based on existing hulls?

I absolutely love the Artillery support idea but it'll probaly never make it in, the game engine doesn't work like that. Seriously though, i'd wet my pants with joy if I got to fly something like that. -------------------------------------------- I'll be all over you like a Powerful Moss! |

I sure hope that the Amarr version would look like Homeworld 2's Ion Frigates. One huge cannon with engine attached. o.o!

ok how could you implement that?
first i think your shipcarrier will be with titans.
but the arti could work like this. you move to a specific area and turn on your guns, once they are online you cant move (like with the cynofield thingy) but you can easily shoot 200km and more. problem would be you dont have any real armor and cant shoot under a range, let's say 50km??? well, but how do you target. 2 things come in my mind.
1. you use the tactical view, like in homeworld :). to designate an area of bombardement you open tactical view and draw a horizontal line, then press a button and draw the vertical line. now you have your target area
2. you must have a ship near your area with something like the targetpainter(could be the first module that works with cloaked vessels). this module is set on a ship. now you get a green blinking on your guns as indicator that a target is painted. you fire.
3. :) you can also combine both mechanics. the second one could be more precisly.
the game engine could work like with missiles, when you fire on your desired or painted coordinates your chance of hitting directly are calculated with your artillery skill. when the projektile hits the area it gets a blastradius with high dmg in the middle and lower to the outside(did i mentioned that the radius must be like 10km or so).
so with method 1 you have to hope that a ship is flying into your blastradius area. with the second one, your the movement of the painted ship is calculated too. the higher your skill the more you hit the precalculated way of your target (it shouldn't be possible to hit fast moving frig, only with luck)

the "artillery" ships would be very welcome
... let's say special cruisers (t2 maybe?), with 200km range, usefull only against BSs (or maybe vs cruisers too, but hardly scoring a hit), locking time very long (something like 20-30s for a BS) with a relatively big damage modifier (maybe 1500-2500 dmg on a salvo, from a single "artillery") and a very long rate of fire (30s?)
imagine 5 such ships warping in a large fleet at 200km, if the enemy is lacking on snipers, they can kill a BS in 20-30s (locking time) and warp out

Hi,
Thanx for the replies. This are just some mindbubbles from me and i'm not a game architect so i can't reply on the technical difficulties of implementing such ships. Balancing out the locking/damage/ROf has always been problem and still is with the ships ingame already. If CCP adjust something one party is happy and the nother party is disappointed.
But seeing the replies on this topic i hope the devellopment team give this some tought. Cheers,
Jan
