Concorde was an impressive machine, but all in all it was a mistake. Was born out of the "faster is better" mentality that transitioned from propellers to jets and also from cheap oil, and lacking those, it was left behind the economy curve. Curently, nobody would pay for the true cost of SST (I think it's telling that military never bothered themselves with SST) and currently air transportation as a business is driven by price. Put in short, there's not enough people whose time is worth enough to pay for SST, and so it's unlikely we ever see SST again. The Greater Fool Bar-áis now open for business, 24/7. Single most impressive air display i witnessed to date is the Lightning. It also sounds the most boring - but im sure some folk will appreciate it.
Incredibly short take off, probably the shortest ive seen without a jump ramp. rotated 90 degrees to the vertical, fully lit the afterburner during the rotate and about 8 to 10 seconds later was invisible against the blue sky. about 20 seconds later completely inaudible.
and that was it - some more aircraft passed by - i think the arrows wooshed in and did the thang.
Then it came ripping over head at well - made you duck, ripped your eardrums to pieces, and oh yeh it suddenly smells of manure around here speed.
I clapped. "caught on fire a little bit, just a little." "Delinquents, check, weirdos, check, hippies, check, pillheads, check, freaks, check, potheads, check .....gangsn++ all here!" |

(The real thing)
Sevilla - Bahia, 6274 km nonstop, March 24th 1929
Or the unfortunate Cuatro Vientos?
Sevilla - La Habana, 6300 km nonstop, June 8th 1933.
Disappeared during the Habana - Ciudad de Mexico lap; it is suspected that it crash-landed somewhere in the state of Oaxaca and the crew was murdered by the locals and then the plane was dismantled and buried. Tu-95 Bear. I'm not surprised by things Russians do... they tried to make a tank fly You mean the Mi-24 ? well its more like a flying BMP but its still quite the machine. Nope. He means this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_A-40

My favorite aircraft is the MiG-21.
A supersonic mach 2 jet the MiG-21 is the AK-47 of fighter jets seeing service in more than 50 Countries with about 14000 have been produced including Chinese F-7 versions. Designed to be cheap for mass production and easy maintenance it has simple controls and a low training requirement all making it popular in many 3rd world nations. Nothing fancy just a 20mm auto-cannon and 4 pylons for air to air missiles.
It has seen conflict in dozens of wars bombing and racking up dozens of kills from most of the Arab Israeli Wars, two Vietnam Wars, the Egypt Libyan Conflict, the 71 and 99 India Pakistan Wars, the 8 year Iran Iraq War, South African intervention in Angola, the Gulf Wars and some others in Africa and Middle East. One of my favorites is the Ogaden War between Ethiopia and Somalia. Two of the poorest nations on the planet engaged in dozens of dogfights shooting down around 2 dozen aircraft and most of the planes fighting were MiG-21's. That is how widespread these things are.
Out of production now many are still in service around the globe with Russia and China selling upgrades including modern radar, beyond visual range air to air missiles, air to ground missiles, anti ship missiles and guided bombs to its users. It may be a dinosaur of the late 50's with a light payload of weapons but speed and maneuverability wise she reportedly handles herself almost as well as an F-16 in the air. |

I will definitely be filing a complaint against the maintenance crew this aircraft it is practically falling apart. What is all that racket outside anyway? Are we landing? I've never been on a plane that lands in a spiral vertical dive before. Those dots are a lot closer now, if only this plane would stop spinning I could see them straight. Oh hay a recognize them, they're American P-38's and... Crap! We're being shot down, that is what is happening I am almost sure of it."
