Have seen the reference to carebears in numerous posts but what does it mean?

I think the general definition is someone who avoids combat with other players at all possible times, never goes into lowsec and does mining/missioning/producing mostly..

Did you never watch TV when you were younger
It's a term used for some one who doesn't pirate, do pvp etc, ie some one who mines all the time.
Regards.

The term carebear is a label, and a generalisation. Just like the term 'pvp'er' Most people labeled as either usually spend a healthy amount of time doing the other activity. pvp'ers have carebear alts and carebears often go shoot people.
All generalisations are false. (including this one ) _________________________

Carebears are risk-aversive in the extreme. This does not mean only risk of combat, but any risk of losing. They tend to be very pve oriented (since there's less risk there), and tend to like large well filled wallets that serve little purpose then making a nice picture.
In eve however, the term has been bastardised and is mostly mentioned in referance to people that would like to see pvp combat being strongly regulated, or at least would want the option of not being confronted by non-consentual combat if they choose to.
Also oftenly used wrongly as another word for miner.

A carebear is someone who, when they find something they don't like, has their first instinct to whine about it, rather than adapt to it (and THEN possibly make suggestions on the forums about it).
Examples:
a) Carebear gates into low sec where there's a pirate camp, whines on forums.
b) Carebear pirate can't instapod people with single smartbomb. Whines on forums.
c) Carebear PvPer doesn't like that he can't catch all industrials with a single 1-strength disruptor. He whines about WCS on the forums, instead of fitting an extra scrambler. -- Proud member of the [23].

Care Bears
Beware, some carebears have teeth and claws. They anger quickly and are known to eat invaders of their space. Approach with caution.

The opposite of a sociopath; believes in the strength of co-operative endeavor. Never a griefer or bully.
Not a career path, or specific views. Many are PVPers, but usually as defenders and enforcers rather than individual pirates.

I like your definitions and sometimes wonder if there are more PVP Carebears than Industrialist Carebears

Actually this is how I see my character - ethical, but prepared and willing to defend himself and others - using game mechanics instead of asking for game mechanic changes. I would hope this is a positively viewed 'Carebear', as opposed to other catagorizations mentioned above, which to me seem negative.

Most of you got it wrong, Carebears are not just casual non violent players that keep to them selves.
Carebears are people who care about other players in a way that they don't like it if you hurt other players in any way, even if it is part of the game and fun.
Carebears always try to protect others with non violent acts, usually whining about the situation though.

Dark Shikari is also right IMO.

You are not a Carebear. If you mine all the time then you are a miner, end of story. Etc... Etc...
If you act like those Carebears from that cartoon then you are a Carebear.
A Carebear is what it sounds like, a fluffy little over caring whiner.

Carebears are multi color teddy bears with little pictures on their tummies...They are cartoons, they went around defeating ebil pirates and gankers by their special carebear powers, the picture on their tummies was their power.
How did it get into Eve? Tank-CEO was forced to watch it when he was a kid and has hated anything cute and cuddly from that day on.
So when he did his newbie slaughter that was somthing he yelled out in local, "I will teach you CAREBEARS to hide from me!!"
then of course I can be wrong.....

Exactly the opposite.

Well i do mine alot, but yeah i dont whinge much anymore. It was more in my newb days i would have a winge. I put that down to thinking the game wasnt like the real world and it was this garden of eden. The the realisation its just like life and its what you make of it, rather than what your given.
That said im still bloody poor after buying all the infrastructure to support myself. Damn BPO's aint cheap.

Carebear: Derogatory term used to describe the kind of person who doesn't 'get' EVE. The kind of player who thinks that 0.0 should be made into space where you can't be shot, so they can go and mine arkonor in peace, and that missions should be soloable without any danger to themselves, without stopping to consider that easy = no fun.

As someone who has played MMPOGs since they were called MUDs 15 years ago. I guess I would be considered a "Carebear" player. I see no satisfaction out of gettting insta killed warping into a system, I enjoy good competitive PvP when I at least have a chance. But being bullied by a player with a Battlecruiser vs a Tristan, is plain silly and not fun.
I dont whine, because if I dont like it I'll avoid it. But to think for a second that the majority enjoys being griefed or poded without a chance is plain ignorant. Or that the mojority even enjoys PvP for that matter. WoW has 3.5 million suscribers, because they cater to every type of player. Dont get me wrong I dont like WoW. But the point is....for an MMPOG to survive long term it needs to offer options to all types of players. Casual gamers like myself who at the most gets an hour of play time a day, do not have 2+ hours to recover from being killed. When I get killed, I'm pretty much done for that night, sometimes a few nights, depending how many jumps it will take me to buy everything I need. Or if I need to go mine or do something else to recover the funds or run some Lvl 1 missions.
The bottom line is to have a choice, you want to PvP?...Cool! You dont? Thats cool too. Loosing casual players is bad for everyone. How much development do you think is going to happen to Eve, if they arent profitable?
That said, I think Eve is going in the right direction, I havent run out of PVE options in the 2 weeks I've been playing, and all death were due to my lack of knowledge. Which is fully acceptable. I would like to see more PvE options, and maybe a PvE server.

This will NEVER happen.
EVE has a player driven market. How dynamic and indepth will this game be when
a) Demand is slashed because people rarely die to npc's
b) Half the items in-game are retracted because they have no PvE application.
It would be a sad empty shell of what EVE is now.
