Hope
Each night, billions of people look at the star-filled sky, silent and beautiful, the movement of the celestials. Most of those people are children and teenagers. The adults in general, save for the scientists, pilots and the few Achur, do not look at the stars anymore.
But those who do, often dream, and hope that there is someone out there in all those billions of cubic light years filled with glittering dust and whispering echoes of the creation. Someone to hear them. Something for their lives to have meaning.
A star siently falls down from the sky, and someone on the dark planet below makes a wish. Someone else looks into the fake window of the shuttle as it descends into the atmosphere and tries to guess what the wish was.
Being a capsuleer can teach one many things. But the most important thing I have learned was that to change anything in this world, you must start with yourself. If you can change yourself, then the merciless world above can't claim you, can't mold your soul into another monstrous creature that thinks itself free from its nature.
Who was I in their world? Less than nothing. They called me a "NPC corp alt" - that, in ther lingo, means I was a spy for a more established entity, hiding under the state ticker. But does it matter if the people who are unhappy when they can't ruin someone else's day despise you? I saw it all: the vast expanse of lawless nothing, the darkness of lowsec where you are always hunted, the traffic of great trade routes. I was uplifted and there, among the empyreans, I saw madness and sin incarnate.
But I also saw those who, despite all odds, stayed human. And I thought - If someone truly has the strength of character to make it through, to resist everything that corrupts capsuleers, every temptation possible, then what greatness, what potential is still concealed within us, the human race?
This world, the New Eden, was given to us and it is what we make of it. It is not all grimdark. As long as we have hope, the souls of those who do will ward off the darkness, like stars in the endless universe.
Snine on and never give up, and one day we might see another world, a world filled with the light of billions and billions of stars, each unique and beautiful.
