Fan fest, awsome, wish I could have gone. You all deserve a party to be sure, for all the work that gets done. Also, I apollogise for the poor attitude I have at times in my postings. It just seems to me that alot of work is required by a player to elicit responses from DEV's on topics important to that player. This is understandable, you all are quite busy. Answering my vain questions prevents the DEV's from fixiing problems and innovating the game. So I guess what I'm sayin is thanks Oveur and all DEV's for taking the time that you can to discuss the state of affairs.

While the saying you quoted may be true, there is also a caveat, "You will catch more flies with honey than you will with vinegar."
Gruff is one thing, and you did an admirable job with your post. It is when we get posts or e-mails so loaded with vituperation and vitriol that the meaning get lost in the message. As Red stated, keep the content of the post reasonable and the chances of an answer are much higher than a post such as, "You nerfed <insert recent change>! Go **** your mother's dog, you *** **** mother******!!!111elevenone"

Yes and no. The Devs are rather busy, especially with Kali upcoming. However, they do post more than the Devs from any other game that I have seen, Oveur especially. We have room to improve, especially in the Blogs, but we're working on it.

welp, players can always start moving into 00 systems so too help with the server loads on empire nodes. this is one of the reasons i moved into 00 systems. lag seems alot less out their i think. i still would like too see a canadin ccp server setup in nova scotia or montral too attract us/can players too the game. maybe make it so we on the other side of the ocen can just cross into the euro side servers and same for them crossing over too us. it would just be a few jump gates too most of us. i have been on the net since the old days of the millitary net an feel this side of the world has the best net and bandwith around. i still say it was a poor chose of ccp too setup in england. their systems/net just flat out sucks for lag and always has.

No, not at all. There are only 3000 simultaneous trial users allowed at any single time and we seldomely hit that roof (if ever), so 7 or 14 days is not a factor at all.
It's also that these hub systems are getting hammered by level 3 - 4 agents. A trial user can not use these agents, so this would not solve the hotspot problems.
Does this mean you are re-distributing agents to different systems to keep them spread out amongst, say, 10 or 12 systems and, hopefully, prevent 3 or 4 systems becoming highly popular like Jita/Rens/Ours? Or will these new sold-state thingies (that is a technical term) allow 200 + users per system without lag?
I was polite.

awesome post and great replies ;p
I ain't a tech junkie or anythin like that, but there seem to be a few empty empire regions about.... why not try to boost those by making new routes into them to make ppl spread into them, add agents and everything to it (probably already done though).
Yeah they'll probably just result into more hub systems but that means more ppl out of the other ones so it'll kinda balance out won't it?

Indeed. Cmon, if you guys keep asking Devs to keep making more blogs and updates, you're just making them take precious time away from fixing/upgrading/updating the system/s.
Dont pressure the Devs anymore than you have to, and it'll all pay off in the end. Admire EVE from afar and you will love it... Play EVE up close and you will worship it... |

Players are picky and passionate, but I think that given excellent communication like this, they are willing to be patient with the devs while they work their magic. ---

solution in the short term is to simply disable new trial accounts - if players want to play the game until things are sorted out and the servers and eve can handle higher players is to disable trial accounts any new players that want in will pay if htey think it is that good.
After the next content - hotfix - hardware upgrade we should be back to normal - in terms of newer player surges in newbie high traffic systems - simply move the level 1 agents a llittle more spaced out in high sec

*sigh*.. once again I am reminded just WHY I keep playing Eve... even with the bugs, running into players with more pimples than brain cells and the admitted whimisical nature of GM rulings. Oveure's reply was forthright, succinct and well detailed. A very uncommon trait in most MMORPG's... (try getting a straight answer out of the dingleberry's at CoH or SWG )
Admittedly as much as many of us rant and rail (myself included at times) the level of service and devotion to the playerbase goes beyond "I'm in it for the money.... show me the BlingBling and where's my spinning wheels....*altho on a Dominix spinning Bling might be pretty kickbooty* "
A great post and equally great reply.. well done! "SHOW US YOUR HOOTERS!" - traditional greeting at the Annual Owl Fanciers Convention

Oveur/Kieron/any dev.
Rather than having one of these long long posts, is it possible you guys could setup a page that allows us to check on the status of things... I.E. estimated completion dates for upgrades, patches, planned changes (not just on the patch side) and hopefully cut alot of the questions that this thread and future threads might queiry. I understand it might actually be more of a pain but you guys must have spent 2-3 hours on these threads each day just answering peoples questions. Perhaps a page with this info could be setup even if its just to reasure players that their money is being spent wisely!?
I know it sounds like the dev blog but atm all you have on there is the future patch updates, no estimated dates etc etc. If you dont give people the option to reply to these notices on the page directly you wont get pages of moans on it. That can be kept to forums leaving the ISD's to do their job and notify you if you guys need to look at something. ^_^

We like Tux, Tux talks and listens. But he's taking away the minmatar frigates speed. Hence, lots of minnies moaning that are ships are now actually duct tape and steel.
I for one, would not want to be a balancing Dev - good luck to the lad tho, he had some good ideas for minmatar ships, which I hope he goes ahead with. Speed back tho! Its all we got :) -

If I recall correctly, Oveur has said previously that the lists of agents, etc are held on databases and that the non-programmers are able to change these kind of things.
As Oveur also says, Jita, Rens and the like are being hit by hundreds of players because they have a concentration of stations and agents to attract players.
Would it not be possible and, imo, desirable to re-distribute some of these agents and stations into other territory? Certainly, level 3 and 4 agents should be moved into 0.4 and below systems. Maybe a programe of moving certain NPC Corp stations into the outer reaches of Empire, also. I am sure ISD could come up with some story-line reasons to do so. This would have the desirable effect of spreading players out more and take some of the load off those hub systems. Of course there will be some protests, but there always are with any change.
Just a suggestion

We do have something along this vein, The Drawing Board, In Development, and In Testing. The Dev Blogs are also great sources of information. Those pages give a glimpse into EVE's future. Some of the things listed may not make it into EVE, but most probably will.
As for giving release dates, i.e., "<Feature X> is going to be added to EVE by <date>", that is something we are going to avoid. It is too easy for Murphy's Law to intervene and create delays. In turn, this makes me post "Delayed" announcements, players get upset, the forums get clogged with rants and complaints, some players quit, said feature eventually makes it into the game, players return, rinse, repeat. If we have a firm date, like "Kali is going to be deployed on <date>", once the date is available, we will announce it.

Firstly, I see that Oveur (see what I did there? I spelled the man's name correctly )has gained a lot of kudos for his reply to Kismet's post. Well lets give credit where credit is due and give Kismet some well deserved praise for a very clear, concise and coherent opening post.
Secondly, as the thread digressed into server hardware techno-babble for a wee while in the middle there, it got me to thinking. Which is generally considered a "bad thing", but here goes.....
If CCP are getting some "high-falootin' Blade server thingies" to replace the "stodgey old server thingies" with SOONÖ. Why can't they use the "old stodgey server thingies" and add them to the "myeve" server thingies to make them more ninja? (aka better)
Thus saving CCP some money as they get more life out of their server thingies and pleasing the paying playerbase as they get their much missed Character Manager thingie back.
I know, now your all going to tell me it's the "wrong type" of server thingie and could'nt possibly be used for that purpose.
Oh well....back to the drawingboard.

Has CCP (recently (re?))considered offloading more work onto the clientside application? specifically, having the clients contribute more towards the backend work? (markets etc) For security and to protect against exploits you would have to have them contribute to a different region, and have any specifically identifiable information sent to clients obfuscated but would this possibly alleviate the problems? (bear in mind that, unlike in 2003, bandwidth to the clients is not at so much of a premium, particularly in the uk, some of us have nice 8mbit+ connections). Just an idea. (hey im a seti@home fan) |

Great original post. Great Reply. Makes me proud to play this game.
But Oveur, aren't you breaking some kind of unwritten game developers code by keeping your customers informed? If I were you, I would be worried especially since they now know you drive a Honda CRV 2001.
