I am about ready to throw the bloody thing out the window. Its an AMD athlon 64 3200+. The heatsink is a quite good model by zalman. One day the CPU just started getting to hot. I took the case off and found I couldnt put it back on. The problem got worse and worse over 6 months so I assumed I was lookign at a breakdown of the thermal compound (I had used the boxed heatsink and thermal paste). I replaced the heatsink with the zalman one and using arctic silver 5. I tried all variations between virtually transparrent to totally thick paste layer. Between seatings I have cleaned it scrupulously with isopropyl alcohol.
I have to run a desk fan pointed at my case now to hold 55 degrees (AMD rated max is 70c and it would burst that under load if I didnt use the desk fan) If I run the fan, the temp holds at about 55c. I have tried upgrading the bios to the most recent version with no effect. The motherboard is a K8V Deluxe.
My theory is that the CPU is the problem. That the CPU has either a bad thermosensor or is actually producing far too much heat under load. I would appreciate advice from anyone else that has hardware exp.

Airflow is fine. Its a Thermaltake Xaser case. But at any rate even with the case opened and a desk fan pointed at it, it barely holds 55c under load. --------- The words "Exciting" and "Safe" are mutually exclusive; pick one.

Actually I just dont understand it. WIth the case off and a desk fan, it can maintain temp but otherwise it cant. I dont really get it. I have tried the fan configs and I am sure that this isnt the issue. I am needign some SERIOUS airflow to keep it from popping 70c. Even then the strange thing is that the heatsink is only warm, not hot to the touch.
Im really starting to think the CPU has a bad thermal sensor. The problem is that i could replace the motherboard and find that its not the problem and then the CPU and find that it was the problem. All the while blowing tons of money on a computer that is here for only ONE purpose; namely Eve.
BAH ... I need this computer ONLY for eve ... this is ticking me off ... I use my Mac Dual G5 for everything else. **** growls **** --------- The words "Exciting" and "Safe" are mutually exclusive; pick one.

I did a strip and rebuild 6 times, scrupulously cleaning the CPU at each seating. Right now my MB is reporting 56c and yet I can easily touch the heatsink without buning me. it isnt NEARLY that hot. I dont really want to blow 500 euros on this box when I only use it for eve but I might not have much of a choice.

Thats the *****. I dont know if its the CPU or the mainboard and, no I dont have a spare rig to find out. I would have to either try to replace one or the other to find out. Im just loathe to spend 500 euros on a machine that I ONLY use for eve. --------- The words "Exciting" and "Safe" are mutually exclusive; pick one.

Well its either the thermo sensor or the CPU. Either way Im looking at some expensive replacements .... BLAST. --------- The words "Exciting" and "Safe" are mutually exclusive; pick one.
