From what I understand of it, they already have the assets, just not available to us.
From my own work in 3d modeling, when I do texture work I almost always start with 2048 or 4096 res textures. This means that making a "high res" set is actually less work than a "normal" texture set because I don't have the added process of compressing them all to say 512 or 256 (or sometimes much less, think 64 or even 32). I prefer high res myself as that means less time spent working on something from my end, and it looks better in game. But you'd be amazed how some people gripe when their "super computer" doesn't run everything at 60-120FPS all the time like they "think" it should.

There is a lot of other things that need to be considered before we do this. eg - how to distribute? How to apply?Able to apply only sections (like, high res nebulas only?) etc etc.

The most widely-used option would probably be to have :
- High-rez Nebulas
- High-rez structures like stargates, stations, (planets ?) etc... Every celestial that won't be crowding the screen (unlike ships) because they are not player-driven.
- And high-rez texture for our own ship only.
- Of course the ability to also display the high-rez texture of a "look at" ship dynamically would be cool but I don't think that it can be done easily.

I love to see how people think it is as easy as drag'n'dropping a folder named "HD Texture pack" in a FTP. You do realize developers are actually following rules and distribution choices right? |

This would fit with the mission of the Launcher. I would like to see an Option to "download hi res textures."
The option could reveal a new sub-page of the main launcher window, or a pop-up. Break down the enhanced graphics into sections, you may even wish to offer two levels of higher resolutions, to offer players a choice between "better" and "best we have, please don't complain about FPS."
Available Hi-Rez texture packs: (none selected by default) [X] Nebula skyboxes (2GB) [X] Station hangers + CQ (1GB) [_] CQ Avatars (2GB) [_] Station exteriors / POS / Gates (1GB) [_] Celestials (planet/moon/roids/etc) [X] Capital ships (500mb) [_] Sub-capital ships (by race/faction?) (2GB) [_] modules installed on ships (200mb) [_] other categories I didn't think of...
3 items, 3.5GB client bloat selected [download button]
Bonus points for ability to enable / disable once downloaded, so folks can "wow" their friends with a simple checkbox and client restart. |

Not everyone uses, or wants to use, torrents. There needs to be multiple ways to download.
It would be great to be able to select which packages apply.
Maybe like how Fallout 3/ NV and Skyrim allows you to select which packages apply, and in which order. Multiple graphics packs, soundscapes, and UI options would be great.

To be honest, most of the game looks great (Ships, stations, avatars, planets)
The only thing that needs to be upgraded with better textures are the nebula and the star backdrops. They are just so low res, it's not even funny anymore. Back in the day there was a premium and a classic client, perhaps have something like that.

Torrent, Executable, Check Boxes after agreeing to install if you only want certain high res textures.
Anything else

Most MMOs use torrents to send patches and files to their players whether they know it or not. But besides this, host it somewhere...SourceForge(?) and then link to it on the main site. Done... There was talk about using torrent tech to send out patches, I see no reason why an optional Hi-Res texture package couldn't be distributed along the same lines of delivery. Also considering the new launcher is still in development, I guess it wouldn't hurt to try to implement this, I will note that this will kill whatever deadline CCP is probably set at for the current launcher dev cycle/process.
All I can say is get more players to express interest, if it's in reasonable demand by a majority of the players, they'ed be more likely to to take more time and actually implement it. |

If nothing else, I think high-res nebulae would be a good start. They are the thing we see everywhere no matter how zoomed out we are in space. I thought they looked amazing in early previews, but I was horribly disappointed at how bad they look when they were released (mind you, I'm not dissing the art, it's great, but the resolution is terrible when you play in 3840x1200 on large monitors). Then, go from there. Pretty please? |

So basically it will be distributed over the next 10 or so expansions to give the impression that "new content and changes" are being added, when you could simply release it all in one expansion/patch but have less to show for the other ones.

via drag and drop Bad idea. If only use drag&drop then it will replace your old files once and forever.
Better solution - some kind of installer that makes a backup of all replaced files, then does the replacements. After the first copying would be nice to just change filenames (like backup_*filename*) without moving them out of the client folder, so that repeated changes of texture packs via installer-configurator tool would only rename existing files in-place without copy-pasting them anew everytime. I miss those days, so much. Standard and Premium option would be great, but it would be a lot of work that would be diverted away from work on "Internet spaceships." |

Shiny textures that only apply to the ship you're focusing on would be neat. Most people probably aren't paying that much attention or are close enough to notice the lower textures the ships around them, but they still have to look at their own ship close-up all the time. If you press the look at option on another ship, load that texture and hope nobody can tell the texture changing with the camera zooming. Maybe this way you can give the illusion of having the high resolution textures, without much extra performance load?
It is an internet submarine game after all, it makes sense our submarines look as pretty as they can. Even if it is just in the hanger at the least. |
