I recently made an alt for the purpose of having him fly a Freighter for me. Now i'm quite a rich person, so I bought him +5's to speed up training a little, having to get through learning skills first is a drag.
Anyway with this character I had my first encounter with the recently added Aura Tutorials. Anyway. Basically what happened was, I was hauling some goods down to my 0.3 agent, and came across a gatecamp along the way. It was just Battleships, one guy used sensor boosters but I never got my pod caught by people like these before and would have gotten away just fine.
BUT..
The Aura Tutorial started as my Hoarder went poof. I was rendered UNABLE to warp, or do anything until I closed it down (which brings up a second screen which you need to click away in order to right click in space) So there I was, with my +5 implants, in a pod sitting still for an extra 5-6 seconds. I would have been in warp 4 seconds ago, had it not been for that lovely voice still talking to me.
I don't feel bad about losing a Hoarder, or the 3k Juggernauts + EMP L I was carrying. But losing close to 2b in implants because of a tutorial? Even though I can afford them, I feel pretty f'd up right now
Oh and to top it all off, when my clone woke up in the station YET ANOTHER tutorial started, telling me how I just got podkilled. OH YEAH THANKS CAPTAIN OBVIOUS, LIKE WE DON'T KNOW THAT ALREADY. *sigh*
End of story, excuse me while I go get liquired up and curse myself for a while.

I thought this was going to be another whine but you have a really good point. I was messing about with an alt last night and had the same crap.
Aurora - "HI! I see you have lost a ship"
Me - "Argh Feck off you silly cow, I'm about to get podded"
Squish
It's a decent tutorial but sadly lacking when it intrudes on the "real" EVE.
Give the man his implants back!

Its not going to happen, I tried already. Got the copy paste GM response, then pressed on explaining it further which resulted in another "I'm sorry, blabla yadayaya, goodbye"
And yes, I made an alt to post this. Both my chars are in a big well known corp and tbh I feel like a total dumbass for what happened

That sux... who asked for these stupid aura tutorials and why are they automatic instead of "do you want to open a tutorial"
CCP should refund what was destroyed tbh, this is clearly a massive screw up on your part. Even if there is an option to disable it theres no easily accesible information on how to do it!?

Yes, this is a real problem and needs to be patched. Not all characters exhibit the Aura problem though. Solutions until it is really fixed:
Complete the tutorial, a real pain for established chars. Immediately after complete log-on, escpape to options/general and untik show tutorials. Doing this before completing log-on fails since for whatever reason it gets rechecked once your in base....this might not be exact but it is pretty close and another thread exists elsewhere with much more detail.

You know a whine is called for when everyone agrees with it.
I, for one, welcome this whine, because I GODDAMN HATE THE AURA TUTORIAL TOO!
Why would you want it to come up and say "Hey, you've been killed!" when you just got whacked by a gatecamp?
And you wonder why people log off to save their pods... -- Proud member of the [23].

My big problem with them is if eve or your pc crashes, it can screw up your settings, the result of that is that you canhave them turned back on without knowing it, which is annoying.

How much did the pirates get off you? Not much? Compared to what was blown up, it doesn't seem worth it.
The pirates should be ransoming you.
When pirates sailed the seven seas, they did not have to blow up their treasure just to get a few coins, they attacked and over came the ship and got all the treasure.
But in EVE the pirates get squat.

This is a testament to the stupidity of the social system the players of EVE have created. Why didnt they try to ransom you? Couldent hold their tank for another 15 seconds? Why even pod someone in a situation like that? What does it gain for them? The people who podded you could have made 500 million isk right then EASILY...but NO. They have to be greifers. They stand to gain everything and instead they chose to mindlessly grief... for no reason.... lose-lose situation.

Why would a gate camp demand a 500M ransom of a newbie? Remember this guy used his main to buy the implants. They probably thought 'hah, must be an afk dope, he's not moving. A character named Silentbob is someones alt. While I was trying to transfer 200,000,000 isk to my other character, I accidentaly transfered it to him instead of my character due to close name spellings and becasue I just woke up. :) *******YES IT WAS MY MISTAKE******** I sent a friendly letter to Silentbob explaining that I accidentaly sent 200M isk to him and if he would send all of it or part of it back. He never responded. Afraid he was just some inactive account I sent a letter to a GM. He informed me that the owner of the account knew he had recived the 200M from me but chose not to give it back.
I know it is because of my mistake that he has the isk, and I would consider him a super honorable hero if he gave it back. But just because it was my mistake does not mean it is not dishonorable for the person who playes Silentbob to keep the isk for himself.
So I am going to give an ISK reward to whoever can tell me who Silentbob's main is so I can continue to try to get my isk back. Perhaps if his reputation is at stake he might cooperate. Thieves love darkness and disguise. Revealing their true identity sometimes stops them.
Fascinating. Got lots of sympathy in that thread too.
I'm absolutely sure its just a coincidence, but I hope people keep their "aww shucks" ISK in their wallets....

They got him in less than 10 seconds I'm sure. I dont think they thought he was AFK... A smart pirate would be able to assess the situation and use cunning "negotiation skills" to get the most isk out of the ransomed player as possible.
Instead of just saying "Give us 2 million isk or die!" They could use an approch like "How precious is your life to you?" *have a light drone attack the pod* *get it down to 20% hp* "Eh eh? 20 million you say?" *10% hp* "What was that? 100 million?" *5% hp* Pilot "OKOK OK OK JUST STOP PLEASE ILL PAY 500 MILLION I SWEAR JUST PELASE STOP." "Thats more like it."
Seriously, would you screw around with a pirate who had you totally locked down and had a light drone hitting your pod if you had TWO BILLION WORTH OF IMPLANTS on you? I bet it wouldent even take that much "negotiation." A SMART ransomed person would weigh the "risk vs reward" of not satisfying the pirate in a situation like this and just pay the frick up.
Even so, I dont think even the long version would take longer than 20 seconds. Besides, if a ransomed pilot was stupid enough to force the pirate to have to use drastic measures then he might deserve to be podded and needlessly lose 2 billion...
Anyways, the point is, a person should never destroy a random strangers pod. You have absolutly NOTHING to gain. NOTHING. I understand why you might destroy a hauler ship without chance of ransom (and even then I'd say a smart pirate would at least try to ransom ships too) but why should you EVER EVER EVER destroy a random targets pod without even trying to ransom?
If you are getting them out of your territoy, sure...but most the time pkers use that excuse thats what it is, an excuse. A noob in a pod who just wants to leave isent some sort of a spy threat. Seriously, get over the spy excuse please. The only other reason a person should make it routine to destroy pods if it is a WAR TARGET. Donig damage to specific enemies you are at war with does = smart. but killing random hauling noobs that you have never met or will ever meet again is just pointless.

Its very, very hard to do what you have described when you have sentries hitting for 1000 damage every 1.5 seconds.
Usually people say "**** off". And the rest of the time, you'll probably have to warp out before you have a chance to finish the ransom. -- Proud member of the [23].

Kind of hard when the sentries are firing or you're 249km away from the gate.

I see the point concerning sentry guns making it so pirates have a much harder time trying to ransom. Kill? Fairly easy. Ransom, much harder. This is backwards.

Even so, they still stand to gain nothing by destryoing what looked like to them to be a total noobs pod. I've tanked sentrys in low sec and it is annoying but not THAT hard to do... but overall I agree. Sentrys in low sec are probably one of the biggest reasons people who WANT to ransom simply cannot, thus "forcing" pirates to kill when negotiation could have been done.
An interesting thing though:
If sentrys are the only things "forcing" pks to mindlessly slaughter peopel when both parties could have ben enriched through negotiation, then why is it that almost no one in 0.0 ever ransoms?

True, but I really hope the campers who podded him read this thread. I can imagine them pounding their heads onto their keyboards.
Of course, if they tried the ransom simply out of habit, and never ask for an amount, make the person who's life is about to end make the first offer, he might have thrown out a sum similiar to 500M if they escorted him to where he was going. Who knows.
Who knows was his point. Those who just shoot mindlessly will never know. Recently, I lost a ship while fighting rats because a character that clearly outclassed me attacked me while I was engaged. If he would have destroyed the cruiser that was shooting me after he clearly showed he could kill me easily, I would have transfered the isk he asked for. But no, not only did he not destroy the rat, he continued to fire on me while he asked. So all he got was some of the ammo I was carrying and my afterburner, instead of the 10M he asked for. He didn't even get the satisfaction of podding me.
I mean seriously, I was scrambled, I wasn't going anywhere until he decided to let me go.....

Sure, they had something to gain (in this exceptional situation)
They had nothing to lose by killing the pod. Maybe they have a corpse collection competition. Maybe they have a steady stream of implants and need to create a sales market. Who knows?
One thing is for sure, it's not griefing. Griefing is against the games rules and what they were doing was not.
Anyway, don't read too much into what I'm saying, I'm just playing devils advocate.

Edited by: WolfGang H on 10/10/2005 03:43:09 To be more accurate, certain types of griefing are against game rules and other types are not. I'm not saying these guys are just horrible evil "OMG GRIEFERS," but destroying the pod of some random noob who has done nothing to you and who you will prolly never meet again is, by a certain definition (one ill explain), griefing.
To me, griefing is going out of your way to inflict loss or cause pain to others when you stand nothing to gain by it. This is actually a pretty good gloabal definition of griefing. While I admit podding people is a great thing in EVE and is not that bad, especially because it is a built-in and intended feature of the game, it is still grifing in most cases to do it to a random stranger for absolutly no reason.
There are many ways you can grief without breaking the rules. For example, I could start a corp, build a positive reputation, seek out and hire people who are very new to EVE, get them to all mine veldspar for 14 hours straight, and then load a bunch of jet cans full of the veldspar they mined and destroy the jet cans with my uber battleship right in front of the noobs. I waste my own time and TONS of time of random noobs who mean nothing to me, and I gain NOTHING in the game. It is griefing, but I dont think you could get a GM to ban someone for it...
It makes perfect sense to destroy someones hauler. You might get some good loot. But it makes no sense to routinely destroy strangers pods. You gain nothing. They might lose tons. In it's base form, it is griefing.

Your whine has a valid point, I feel your pain. I hate all tutorials generally and would climb up a tree and throw bananas on bypassing ppl if a tutorial would make me lose isk.
But you have to understand that even that you are right, there is no way you can get your stuff back, because else everybody would buy implants and go pvp'ing with the tutorial on and would get their implants replaced all the time.
