I have been pvp centered for the past couple of years. I am now realizing that I am broke for a reason. So I decided to train up to use large mining barges and tech II mining lasers. I am planning to mine Crock and Bist. The question that I have is how long does this take? And what is the best strategy for making money mining in the mean time.
I will have industry 5 in 3 days. I already have astrogeology 3 from my carebear days when I just started. I also have mining 4. I know that I need to train mining drones to be able to use the mining drones for the extra pull.
Money is not an issue. At least I dont think that it is. What is the strategy that I should be using to optimize my mining money making while these skills are training.

I do not know how long it will take for you to get in a large barge but it requires barges 5 and that does take quite awhile. If you have been playing for as long as you say then I assume you can use Battleships, and since you say you are planing to mine Crok & Bist I assume you will be mining in 0.0
A large barge is fantastic for mining but if you are solo mining in 0.0 I reccomend using an Apoc or my fav a Domi with miner II's it will pull in almost as much ore as a med barge and can tank most 0.0 rat spawns while doing so. Load up a domi with drones and clear the spawn when you are ready to haul your ore away. The Apoc will out mine the Domi but does not have the same drone capacity of the Domi.
Just keep in mind while a large barge does pull in a bit more ore is it worth all the extra training and does it really pull in that much more ore than a BS when you have to warp out as soon as you see a red dot on your overview?

I do not plan to mine solo. There are usually other people mining where I am. I need to pull as much as possible as fast as possible. Hence the plan to train an uber miner, tech II strip miners, crystals, the whole shebang.

Miningbarge has a multiplier of 4.
I guess you have good stats so i would say around 3 weeks from barge 1 to 5

For a large barge and tech II stripminers you'll need both mining and astrogeology at 5 iirc. Also you'll be wanting to use the tech II crystals probably for the stripminers, these need lvl4 of the relevant ore processing skill, these in turn need some levels of metallurgy/refining/refinery efficiency depending on the ore.

Mining Barge lvl V is currently sat at 25 days on my skill sheet. i am trying to train one or two of the learning skills up to try to bring that down, but i am not hopefull.
25 sodding days! My worry is that the other two barges, small and mid are completely useless, considering I have a Domi kitted for mining too, am hoping the biggy isn't the same let-down. :-(

I just made it to medium barge. I bought one of them in empire, only to have my alliace get in a war. \o/ for war, but /o\ for trhansporting the barge back home to 0.0. So I bought one up here in the frozen north from a corp mate. I find that a barge will me exactly the same as a megathron. In fact, megathron, gets 1 extra unit of crockite per 3 minutes. This is with all the mining drones deployed.
A megathron will also outmine a domi. 6 lasers + 13 drones is exactly the same as 7 lasers and 8 drones. And megathron still has a high slot available after that. Apoc will of course outmine them all with the extra laser.
So here we have the order: Apoc > megathron > medium barge > domi. So the solution for me, is to go for the large barge.
Training astrogeology 5 will take about 17 days for me. I am training the barge skill to 4, (3 days). Does that mean that it will take me 12 days for the mining barge 5? It will be a month before I can use the large barge.
THe time takes to train up for the tech II bistot crystals is insane. Probably will be in the region of 2 months. Refining 5 (8d), refining efficiency 5 (??d). mining 5 (6d), bistot specialization 3(??d), acrokite efficiency 3 (??d). In other words, for ever. Oh, and the modulated strip miners are 22mil where I am at.

I am flying med barge atm, large on the way, 25 days for barge 5 and 15 for astro 5. With mining 4 I pull 870m3 per strip miner 1 every 3 mins. At mineing 5 astro 5 and barge 5 that should go to about 920 to 930m3 per strip miner every 3 mins. You can fill a jet can in 30 mins 15 if thre is two of you.

being a hardcore 0.0 miner (Read: Militant Carebear). Its easy to set your tank (i recomend some stabs on it otherwise you may need to free your tanking ship), i reccomend that you get yourself either a badger mk2 or ity 5 as a mining barge with decent skills can fill a jet container in around 30 mins.

I was helping my CEO doing some mining in his Large barge. With his skills he was mining at 970m3 per strip miner every 3 minutes (or 970m3 a minute). He had maxed out mining skills but I think he was only using Strip miner Is. I could easily haul his ore in a Bestower with 3 containers in it (12000+ m3 cargo space), in fact I could have handled 2 large barges with his mining rate.
