Edited by: Nadar on 11/10/2005 23:36:52 I've always wondered about this: Why does things explode in the space? Isn't it supposed to IMPLODE? And why does it make sounds when exploding?
How? What? Why?
Been wondering about this for almost 2 years now..

1) Read the backstory, sounds are simulated by your ship computer. 2) Huh? Why would they implode? I guess you haven't taken physics yet? -- Proud member of the [23].

In space there is a vaccum. Look up what a vaccum ans what space are if you think i'm wrong. That means that the pressure inside a space ship is higher than the outside pressure, for you and me by about 14 pounds per square inch. That is the air pressure us humans like to breathe. Punching a hole in the right place in a space ship would have the same effect as popping a baloon. An ecplosion.
The noise wouldnt really be there because there is no air in space but its a nice effect in the game. If you don't like it mute your pc. It generally falls under the catagory of artistic licence. Also the average audience member would find the idea of a 2km long ship (I beleive the Apocalypse battleship is about that long) silently blowing up less realistsic than the technicly inaccurate noise. Such are the problems with living planetside.

Its in one of the chronicles... something about people responding better to audio cues so they included explosions and gunfire.

Thank you, was a big confused about the explosion/implosion.
Indeed it's better to have the sounds there, even though it's not realistic ;)

I was thinking about this kinda thing the other day whilst looking at the smoke comming out of an angel harvester. How does smoke react in space?, maybe the nasa website will say something, or maybe we could send ccp into space after a few years subscription

Smoke is caused by fire.
Fire burns off oxygen.
What comes out of a ship with holes in it?
You guessed it...
OXYGEN!!!! -- Proud member of the [23].

Smoke is caused by a LACK of oxygen.

I would assume ships explode because its cooler, but if you insist on a physical link, I would expect the fusion reactor losing its ability to contain superheated plasma would be appropriately catastrophic.

Now if they could upgrade the ship explosion to be more like for the stationary things , or be more like in Homeworld 2 now those are some nice explosions --------------------------- Caldari will be ours once more. We will make sure of it ! |

Smoke is definitely NOT caused by a lack of oxygen. If that was the case, no fires will have smoke due to the ample oxygen everywhere. Rather, smoke is a byproduct of whatever is burning and evaporating. Hence why igniting a lighter will produce no smoke but burning a sheet of paper will.

Well yes, that too--smoke is caused by incomplete combustion. And since the air in the starship isn't pure oxygen, AND it will be dispersing, there will be tons of smoke. -- Proud member of the [23].

It is realistic. IT IS LITERALLY YOUR SHIPS COMPUTER SIMULATING THE SOUND FOR YOU, THE PILOT. This is done so you, the pilot, can have a better feel for whats going on around you.

OMG, next someone will make a post about how the way our ships fly and accelerate is in-accurate. (Worng is the new pwnd, us it) |
