Dearest space-faring colleagues,
If you thought all the secrets of Odyssey were revealed at Fanfest then it is my pleasure to tell you they were not. Team Pony Express are planning on dropping some seriously exciting changes onto the Singularity Test Server for a Mass Test on Thursday (Watch for posts from CCP Habakuk for exact time + details)
CCP Nimbus, CCP karkur and the ever-sarcastic CCP PrismX have been furiously coding new Ship & Pod death sequences that we're hoping will be ready in time for Odyssey's release on June 4th.
In the same vein as the new seamless stargate jump transitions, this work is a part of our drive to "fill in the gaps" in the flow of common EVE gameplay. The goal was that your ship would better inform you when it is in serious peril. It never felt very 'Sci-Fi' that your ship wouldn't make much of a fuss out of being blown to smithereens so we've fixed that.
In the last moments of being blown up your ship UI/HUD will look a lot more like it does in the EVE Origins trailer (at 3:23)
These new animated UI elements are tied to the existing Audio Alerts. We have created this feature with extensive player customization, some features we choose to be pre-calibrated but with this feature you will have options. You can set the thresholds at which you are warned or disable them completely and the new UI has been designed to fit with all other existing HUD elements.
Pod death will never be the same again either, before now it has always been somewhat underwhelming . You are immediately removed from the fight and a couple of seconds later you're back in station. This experience has been replaced by this new sequence:
Quote:As the smoke clears from your decimated capsule your terminally wounded corpse will now be shown gently spinning as life slips away and your camera drones offline. You have a moment to reflect on your unfortunate demise and take in the scenery one last time before a new clone is activated and your consciousness is transferred.
These features are a work in progress and we'd like to get your feedback, please log into Sisi on Thursday to try them out for yourself.

I think one of the main points the development teams have been hitting in regard to these new transitions is that they either reduce time or they take the same amount of time as they currently do on Tranquility. It will never take more time than it does now. Yes, they have been doing that. I would guess that they would continue that trend here. They also disabled the UI during the warp sequence, which might cause problems during the ship to pod transition (since you may be frantically trying to escape before you are warp disrupted). So far the transitions have been good, and I am also looking forward to a new undocking/docking transition as well.
It's okay, we aren't disabling the UI during the ship-to-pod transition. That would be silly :) CCP Nimbus | Programmer | Team Pony Express | SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE |

Generate low-poly player model beforehand, apply grayish-dead-skin shader, store it in cache (like T3 ships), use in the moment of death - something like that. Also model generation procedure can also be used in frozen corpses 3d preview for exciting corpse spinning. Had similar thoughts myself Would love that CCP karkur | User Interface Programmer | Team Pony Express | @CCP karkur |

There is as always a very large number of 'smaller' changes that do not warrant a full dev blog. We often find that it is the little things that are of most importance to many in the Community so I hope that you like what Odyssey brings - EVE Online Quality Assurance - |

Altrue wrote: Pod death is as it should be : minimalist, yet extremely dramatic. I love the duration, no need to shorten a transition as anyway being podded means that you can't join back the field immediately again. Eventually, as the screen remains black for a long time with only a little text, adding a "Memory transfer in progress" with three dot alternatively fading or something like that, in the middle of the screen, could be cool to show that the game hasn't crashed or anything. (And it would definitely be cool ! :D) I admit, it's useless !
Perhaps you are seeing something that is way more minimalist than you should be seeing... do you just get a black screen? CCP karkur | User Interface Programmer | Team Pony Express | @CCP karkur |

And yet it seemed perfectly reasonable to you that it should be disabled for the new jump animation? Or has that been re-thought after ppl who actually play the game told you it was not the greatest decision...?

Chris Winter wrote:Getting podded was pretty awesome, although it seemed to take a lot longer to show up in the clone station than on TQ.
The "clone grade alpha, upgrade needed" in the lower left was a bit confusing, since I knew I was going into an omicron-grade clone. I get that it's there to remind people to re-upgrade after getting podded, but it could maybe be phrased a bit better to make that obvious.
Transition from ship->pod is nice, although at one point I experienced the camera zooming all the way in to the pod even though I had been zoomed all the way out on my ship. Probably would be best to not move the camera around like that.
Edit: Just tested by self-destructing, and the camera zoomed in on the pod again, so it looks like it does that every time...

I just had a chance to see the ship/pod kills. AWESOME! Very nice work! It would be nice if the bodies were actually modeled on our characters, even if it was just on our screen :) I mean, you guys did spend all that tech and goodwill capital on creating avatars and WiS. That'd be a good way to use some of it.
we might be working on that :D

I cant seem to locate a setting to turn off the flashing "hull critical" off without turning off the sound alert. i would like to keep the sound alerts.
I also file a bug report about code appearing on screen after my ship was destroyed and i entered a pod. Did you guys receive it as i made a mistake when loading?
Ah... no, I think the 2 alerts (hull critical and sound) are supposed to go together. I thought you just couldn't find where to turn it off.
And I haven't checked on the bugreports, but this "code" you talk about... is it the text that scrolls up and indicates the failure of number of systems in your ship? If so, it's by design CCP karkur | User Interface Programmer | Team Pony Express | @CCP karkur |
