I still have six semesters before I have to declare, but

Reading your professions I wish I had a good job. Mine is so mind numbingly boring and soul crushing, min wage, no benefits, and only doing it to be legal and with proper migratory documents. I could make more as an illegal alien being a waiter or a store seller.
Sometimes I wonder why when you try to do everything in the proper and correct way, everyone else outside of it earns privileges, government granted benefits, and even migratory help. I mean, If I had been an Illegal here, without paying taxes I could get ID and even a work permit at the melting pot fairs hosted by the government where you declare yourself a non tax paying Illegal resident and after paying some $$$ you would suddenly become LEGIT and all would be well, but since I did things the right way Im screwed, can-¦t qualify for this help and have to scavenge around, get out of the country, pay extra visas and attorney fees.

Jury duty is a civil service and an acceptable hassle for being part of the Republic. I hate it when people cry about it. Heck, if one has half a brain and really do not want to perform their civic duty, it is not that hard to make it so one gets kicked out of just about any jury selection process. |

My job depends on who you ask. I handle paperwork for incoming loads of returned household electrical items from big retailers for a large manufacturer that the wholesaler/exporter I work for has a contract with.
Once the loads have been counted to see how many items they've actually sent back (the paperwork they send lies) I provide that information back to the manufacturer to credit the retailers. I can deal with a load of 22 pallets worth -ú50k in returns value about 5 times a day.
But I'm also the IT department. I used to be the tea maker, but the boss doesn't like my tea, so I got out of that 
Boring job, but I get to sit on my ass all day in front of a computer in a warm office. I used to be in the warehouse picking orders and moving pallets around, in the cold.

Yes, that's me, thanks for noticing =-) I'm better at the highly technical work than raw speed, that job was no cleanup though, so no reason to get fancy. My dad did treework, I was 13 or 14 the first time I spiked a tree. Its been a long time and I've seen so many people hurt and dead that I'm having trouble staying in it now that I have kids.

Where do you live? At least in the State where I reside they give you a phone number to call each morning, for the two weeks you can be called for duty, to see if you need to report. If you are not needed you are free for the day. On top of that we can get exemptions and I would feel that if I called the office and told them I was on unemployment and that if I do not get an exemption from Jury duty that I will be losing the opportunity to start a new job. Then I would say, would you rather I serve jury duty or stay on unemployment?
Jury duty can be a hassle, but few would rather pay the taxes needed to cover a full time set of 'impartial' jurors.

If memory serves, Jason is across the pond. I've got the same situation as you except funner. All court hearings are held in the other big small town in the county and when summoned we're given a list of dates and we have to call in the day before. If our number is called, then we drive to the court house, which for me is a very wonderful and relaxing trip through the back roads in the mountains. Then we spend several hours at the county commissioners office, which is an old converted bar, BS'ing until the sheriff comes by and tells us to go home. Honestly the few times that I've been called the case has gotten settled out of court.
We also can do exemptions. We can call in and actually get all of our dates moved up several months if we need it.

At the moment, full-time volunteer providing technical services at a community radio station. I handle a lot of things like the broadcast transmission systems, the IT infrastructure, the station's music catalog and the studio equipment. Most of my time this summer will likely be spent doing live outside broadcasts and events. Hope to move into a similar, paid role in future. Hard to pay the bills when working for nothing.
I also do a bit of freelance 'consulting' from time to time. Basically I solve technology problems.

Working on a steel mill. Making steel by squishing 1200 degree celsius slabs with up to 5000 tons of pressure. The slabs are 11 meter long, 220 mm thick and weigh around 30 tons. The end result is 1.8 mm thick and long enough. The process is very impressive to watch I must say. |

Very keen Angler, set up a lil fishing Guiding hobby business around '09 just to get out of the house more and was really quite successful, much busier than I ever anticipated, so much so that having made a hash of the bookings one time too many a particularly disappointed customer decided to donate me a PC to keep track of such.

No more bookings taken but yes I still do dangle a worm with that Fella :)
