After reading this article http://technology.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,16559,1589967,00.html it makes me wonder if this could effect the EVE-Online servers and my ability to connect to them?
The jist of the article is the European Union is arguing with the States over control over the DNS servers hosted by ICANN. Read for yourself. |

Don't believe everything that's written
That would essentially be economic suicide for both sides, now would they really do that over a dispute of this (minor) magnitude?

I'd be more worried about the Level 3 / Cognet dispute if I were you. My schools been affected... I can connect faster to europe than I can to other places within the US. Which is pretty fubared considering were on the US backbone.

Visualizing this made me laugh... hard _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I'm not sure I want popular opinion on my side -- I've noticed those with the most opinions often have the fewest facts. |

It is of course worth noting that this would not effect Tranquility because our clients are using ip addresses to connect directly (ie, no DNS lookup).

Actually, they want to cut them off entirley. Though the only countries actually threatening to leave are Russia, China, and Brazil. I don't know about you guys, but I won't miss all the open relays, the spam, the massive amount of effected machines, the webcam *****s and the isk ebayers.
Also, what do you think they are going to say when they wake up to find no google and 98% of the Internets gone.

You make no mention of the US backing out of a prev agreement or the fact that the EU (of which i am not a fan) is trying to be the middle ground between two very far apart positions.

what you see here is another atempt to force US to consive more to the internation community in terms of control.
It's not about EU getting control of the net. It's about US not having the chief right in this. It's about moving the control of the net to UN control.
The possision of UN is just. The US one is merly on preserving control. It's no problem for US to control it on a practical basis. But what this is about is that the trust US once had around this. Is now gone. And on a idelogical basis it's not good for one contry to control the chief accest of the net.
In my mind it's best for the trust and greater use of the net. That it's not control chiefly and solely in the hands on one fraction. SoonÖ

Except the US doesn't have that power. ICANN can add TLDs and is a tribunal for disuptes regarding TLDs. Verisign holds more power over the internet, and with the exception of sitefinder ICANN hasn't stood in their way. This is just grandstanding.

I've been reading a lot about this on slashdot and one of the main pushes seems to be some countries in the EU want control of the DNS systems so that it will be easier for them to filter out content that they dislike. Something that the US has refused to do.
In other hilarious EU news... http://euobserver.com/9/20080
Some members of the EU are evidently calling for a common policy regarding circuses...
