live events are exactly the sort of themepark content eve players love to hate - except it's more like a circus than a themepark and as such not even a good return on the resource investment it requires (a themepark stays there for generations of people to use & enjoy, a circus moves on after a few shows).
certainly a nice extravaganza if you have money to spare but not exactly one of the core strengths of eve.
I call b*llshit
Other then Dropbears salary, how do live events cost CCP anything? They don't require any new content, they are all done with stuff that already exists in game. I don't take part, but have been following the Arek'Jalaan project, and if that how people want to play in their sandbox, good on em..
In fact i think, due to the number of people that show up for live events, and the number of bored rper's that now stay subbed because they have something to do, live events are probably one of the best bang for buck things that CCP has up their sleeve at the moment.

Firstly, thanks for show of support guys. We're really glad live events can make a meaningful impact like this, that's really epic to see. (Also, being called a fanwhore was quite heartwarming, after I looked up the meaning.)
So...Headfirst and I are both still around, and we'll continue to support events as we always have. If it means we shift some of the event work back to our "off hours" then so be it. As we've maintained since the beginning, we really love this part of our jobs, and we're happy to do whatever it takes to keep events going.
Expect a little disruption to events over the short-term, and possibly some readjustments to our resources over the long term. It's possible some of the big ideas for events may become less likely, but we'll see, and keep you all updated on any changes.
Anyways, we'll be back on the road before you know it, and pushing for more event support as we always have. Part of the short-term lull will just be us needing some time. We lost some friends in all of this, and some great thinkers. A little patience would be appreciated in the coming days.
Sooooo much GÖÑ, Dropbear and Headfirst

I know this isnt really your thing but is Alliance tournament going to happen next year. I know CCP Soundwave was not the only person making the AT happen. CCP Fallout and CCP Zymurgist was more a guest than a hosts but still they were the better guests. How to build a PC for EVE thread (by Akira T) http://eve-search.com/thread/1559734-0/page/1

So goddamn glad to hear that! You guys rock. And I am very sorry for the colleagues & friends you lost and everyone will understand that Arek'Jalaan will not be the first thing on your mind for a while.
Thanks again! |

As someone who has experienced the joys of live events from other games, I wholeheartedly agree that they have a profound impact on a game's flavor and are entirely underused in the current MMO market. I haven't been able to be involved in anything in eve yet, but hear the same things I used to say about other games that did similar, mainly that it actually gives the universe its own life and color through player interactions, with each other AND the people running the show. This opens up a whole new aspect to the sandbox, be it through simple pewpew for good random invasion loot, through giving people reasons to shape the economy a certain way, through epic l33t roleplaying with GMPCs, or any combination of the above. Done properly, it gives the -whole- of the game a reason to get together and do something they can all consider fun, where normally the population would be segregated into playstyle with very little reason to actually interact with each other (see any thread about high-low-null population and the divide we currently have). Personally, I think EVE needs more GM and player driven events going on, as it enjoys being one of the few MMOs with a single server/shard/wtfever where something like that is not only feasable without a large army of dedicated event staff, but is actually optimal to having people feel like they did something unique (no arguements about who did what first on what server - it's just there). |

Yeah, we're still here. Like Dropbear said, live events might have a few hiccups while we wait for the dust to settle, but they're very much still part of the broader plan for EVE.
You cannot escape the wrath of Sansha Kuvakei that easily, capsuleers! If I were you, I'd use this momentary quiet to reload and repair. :) |
