Meh sov should only be attained and maintained by being the controlling influence in those constellations / regions via healthy use I the space. Stop using it (no one milking the cows and tending the farmland), its reclaimed by nature.
None if this "I planted my nations flag in it, do its now mine" brain and ball busting nonsense.
- ratting must happen ever hour - all moons (there are a few too many duff ones) need a purpose and people managing them via active towers (managing these needs people living in tower) - anoms must be treated much like incursions - mining of roids to keep them from smashing into towers and outposts
Basically, just being the controlling power via actions rather than planting structures and grinding structures should be how it's done. Want a better harvest of the space? Pay a sov bill and get to grow better crops (build supers or mine better quality rocks).
Soon see a sov map that is real and not completely faked / bluff of empty unused space we are used to.
Good luck with your jump bridge networks when you only use 5 ~ 10 systems per region. No one should be spinning in stations when part of an alliance if space holding people.
Just too easy and boring to allow that to continue.

Dunno about that. Some guys I know went out a couple of weeks ago and literally reinforced every 401k structure in Venal in a couple of hours.
There was a party atmosphere on comms, there was a live TV feed so interested players who are not in 0.0 can see how stuff like this is done... (and of course we could watch ourselves on TV, which is probably clinically narcissistic)
and, oh yeah, there were 1300 of us including over 300 big things that move slow.
I sometimes tihnk that people don't really GET how big 0.0 alliances operate. The DRF did the same thing a couple of years ago when they attacked in Tribute. At their peak they could literally reinforce an entire region... all the towers, all the stations... everything. in a scope of one operation.
Grinding the structures isn't the slow part of it....at ALL... not when you work on a nullsec scale. It's the fact that actually *taking* a system means the enemy comes and fights and sometimes will keep fighting right down to the last stealth bomber. It means you're fighting over and over again to gain every inch.
OMG... that started sounding like how wars work....
see where I'm going? The SOV mechanics in themselves are fine. Working as intended. The part that gets demotivating is that you can't just steamroll through a region on a tidal wave of instant gratification, which is what a lot of EVE players seem to expect.
That said, I think SOV mechanics can be improved to add content to the game but I"m not unhappy at ALL with how they work. Some of you should have been around in the old days when SOV grinding really DID suck.

You mean back in the day, when DRF jammed the systems with 1000 supers to where the only counter was 1200 supers? Yeah that was a blast. The SOV mechanics of massive HP grinds and multi-timer RF, created the "big alliance" mentally of numbers over everything. That is what made Sov grind ****.
After dealing with both systems, POS grinding for Sov at least allowed some tactics and room for error on the defender. Now its just wait out the final RF timer and hope you get the numbers(and have the supers).

I don't know what you mean by "back in the day" but yeah, I do mean when DRF supers blotted out the sun and when they came the cyno effects didn't even slow down for 5 entire minutes...... both heaven and earth shook to the rumbling of their warp drives. I mean when we fought them tooth and nail in every system in Tribute despite them camping gates (literally) with 50 titans..... because the other 200 supers they had were reinforcing the station.
Did I lose heart? No. Not for a second. It was horrible that we were going to lose and we knew it.... That Goons left us twisting in the wind..... that the fail cascade of THE NC felt like the Russians had won EVE.... but it was also the most energizing thing I had ever experienced in EVE.... It was the game being drunk from the proverbial firehose. Every single day I couldn't wait to log on. Every single day I went roaming with epic FC's like PrayingMantis, who is now red to me but to whom I still owe a debt of gratittude for showing me optimism and for being my teacher.... how many FC's in the game have stared straight down the throat of the DRF monster and said, "YOU SHALLNOT PASS!!!!!"
It was a time of massive defeat, of massive growth... of massive change.
The most beautiful thing about this game is that you must understand that there is a difference between RL and game life. In the game, you are immortal. In the game, every defeat is a learning experience. In the game, there is no death, and therefore nothing to fear from life..... from living... from lapping up the guts of your frozen corpse in order to wake up (in RL) to log on and try it all again. |

I am not sure why people hate them so damn much. My guess is because they are jealous of thier success. They are good at using the game mecanics/rules to thier advantage. All they do is technically available to everyone but most people are too lazy to put the effort into it so they would rather cry about how goons are evil for dominating one thing or another insetad of putting the effort into getting thier own share of the pie. This kind of hate is present IRL too anyway so it's not all that surprising to see in a game. |

Null sec is the place for politics, strong groups build around solid structures and personages, there's no place for the weak and this is how Eve null sec ecosystem goes.
Being weak in Null means you're making yourself more enemies than good relationships, doesn't mean you have to blue everyone in order to maintain pvp/economical activities, your mates retention and entertainment while reinforcing position and respect, you have to find common interests at higher direction levels and accept compromises on both parts in order to survive to bigger sharks.
You can win a war without shooting a single round and without making someone leave it's "home", there's no interest for anyone null being a big blue playground safer than high sec, wars are good for many reasons including FC's/members training for different alliances with cheapo throwaway fleets, but if you are bad at this and thus weak, you will get back to high sec faster than you got to null.
But structure grinding? Jesus Christ, farming daily quests in Wow is that boring but at least in a real pvp server you can have some fun, in Eve structure grind is cyno, bridge, deploy protection, shoot shoot shoot zzzzzZZZZzzzz shoot, warp to titan/bridge restart.
Indeed amazingly fun... *removed inappropriate ASCII art signature* - CCP Eterne |

Grinding sov is boring not only because shooting structures is boring, but because it's not just one grind to get thru. You can usually get people behind taking a system or two before fatigue sets in. Goofy timer settings turn Eve into a job by literally making people set alarm clocks and sometimes, skip work. It also takes very little counter attack to upset an invasion- which sounds okay, but in practical terms it amounts to griefing more than epic PvP.
It's the sum of it's parts that makes it a hard sell to get alliances off to war. There are fewer FC's than people think, and they get burnt out, much less the new guy who's dreams of epic space war amounts to orbiting a POS and spamming F1....for hours.....for days....
Given that you can't realistically just take a system here or there- any sov war always means taking a bunch of systems, one by one, with the same grind each time. It's all or nothing, and most alliances know that ALL isn't really an option. Especially with summer coming and less player activity.
While I agree the current structure grind is preventing more wars than lack of desire to fight, I absolutely disagree with the notion that sov should be in any way linked to PvE. Whatever rats show up is irrelevant to holding a system. There are constant rats in high sec yet the empires don't lose sov. We are not care bears, and PvE in the antithesis of what sov is all about in the first place. We'd rather be stuck with grinding ANOTHER PLAYERS structures, than base sov on any PvE nonsense. If our only option is a grind- we'll grind PvP thank you |
