Hi everyone, question from a new capsuleer.
So I've been browsing around a lot of sites, and many of them recommend cross training away from missile boats as soon as possible. The arguments being they are bad at pvp and people don't want them in incursions.
Are the missile ships really so bad ? Whats your opinion ? |

The stuff you read online is out of date.
Kiting missile ships are pretty stout ATM. Light missile condors with damps or tds, ham caracals and drakes and the corax destroyer isn't too shabby either.
Big missiles still need some work but they are expecting a buff in a few weeks with odyssey.
Important note: if your new, train what you like, the FOTM will likely change 5 times before your done training the first one anyways. Support skills and t2 weapons take a while to get up to snuff. |

Missiles are amazing, but not suited to every fleet composition.

While I will not tell you what to fit/fly when I started playing caldari missile ships were the fotm, wit int the next year it was Amarr, then for about 2 years it was winmitar, in the last year blaster ships, prolly will be torps or cruises if we get a decent buff according to expectations. Yes cross train but don't be deterred as every weapon has thier place. Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if your in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. |

I love all weapons systems.
Every system has it's Pro's and Cons. It is how you use it that matters. "I saw him fight by the monument in Jita. -áHe flowed in his Machariel like a Shinto spirit, 800MM shells sprouting in his passing. -áHis hair flowed in the corona of his target's warp core breach. -áIt was truly majestic. -áAnd while everyone stared in awe I stole the loot and ran off.-áBecause I am like that." --áNEONOVUS |

Different types of ships are good at different things. All types of ships are viable (particularly after Tiericide). The comments you're seeing reflect a mixture of
a) People being opinionated about the ships they like vs the ships they don't like (or being stupid and not knowing what they're takling about) or
b) pre-tiericide when only a couple ships in each t1 class were good.
If you like missileboats, go with missileboats. You will run into circumstances where you wish you will have trained something else, but that applies to everything you could train. |

The only "issue" I currently have with missile systems is the delayed application of damage. Turret ships apply damage as soon as the module cycles, while missiles have flight time to consider. The catch here is that in the hypothetical 'perfectly matched' fight, the condor will die first while the ultimate salvo of missiles are in flight.
People I know who I consider to be extremely knowledgeable about PVP insist that the Condor is an awesome small gang PVP ship in the hands of the right pilot: as mentioned above it can be fit with light missiles to employ a kiting strategy, though you can also fit with rockets (which haven't sucked for over a year now) and scare the pants off people who still think a condor is a grey, asymmetrical paper bag flown only by clueless noobs.
Then again, I know of people who have won solo engagements against an enemy flying a superior ship, when their own ship didn't even have a point fitted. PVP in EVE is just as much about your skill as a player as it is about the ship you fly, the modules you fit, and the psychological warfare you conduct.

I would switch if it isn't too painful. I started as Caldari and went full missiles and loved it however in order to fly anything except missile ships, I have to train a lot of gunnery skills. |

Missiles are not bad.
The only reason they aren't great for incursions is delayed dps
All the weapon systems in GENERAL are balanced. You're not going to get screwed over by focusing on any one of them.. BYDI (Shadow cartel) Recruitment open!

Well, this could also apply to "In order to fly anything other than gunships, I have to train a lot of missile skills (and drones too)"
That being said, 50% (or more) of the ships in the Caldari line up are gunships, so training gunnery skills are always recommended regardless of if you crosstrain to other races.
To the OP: Don't worry about the naysayers, like other posters have said, if you only go for flavour of the month ("FOTM") ships, by the time you train up for them, CCP's nerfhammer would probably have struck again changing the metagame. Train for what you like using, and learn to use it well. Support skills are never a bad thing also |

Missiles are fantastic in pve at least. Given the choice I will always fit missiles over turrets in pve. |

There's...differing opinions on missiles, and it really depends on your FC, and how much they stick to doctrines and "rules".
The generic rule is stated above, missiles suck coz delayed damage. However, if you have any kind of intel at all on your target, missiles selective damage is great for exploiting resistance holes.
Personally, I fly a RLML dual ASB nanocaracal in solo/small gang PVP. Great ship for nuking anything dessie and below, and quick enough to outrun big stuff that might eat you. Don't worry miners, I'm here to help!
