Instead of jettisoning extra ore into space as unrecoverable mining lasers should be ablel to sense how much cargo capacity there is in the hold and mine accordingly.
A mining laser mines x amount of ore/min so when it senses how much cargo space is left in the hold it should be able to mine only long enough for that much more ore and deactivate.
Since it can be done manually a mining laser should also be able to do it.
That little bit of ore that's jettisoned adds up especially when you're mining the good ore.

You can get a scanner to see how much ore is in a rock. When near, shut down the lasers and move on.
If you have the lasers work as you suggest, sales of ore scanners will decrease, and you will put a lot of people out of work with no production of scanners.
Tools are available.

i think he means how much ore your cargo hold can carry. more specifically, the last cycle before your cargo hold is full, when the excess ore is jettisonned into space because you don't have the room for it.
i think it's a interesting, albeit a novelty idea. a few cubic metres of ore isn't really going to make that much difference unless you're mining the really expensive ores.

Or you can just know the rate you mine at. The amount of cargo cap you have left, do a little math and shut them off manually.

Usually I dump it before it gets full but sometimes when I'm chatting I lose track of the time or fall asleep and my hold gets full.
My cargo capacity with expanders with a full load will have a space left for a few units of ore.
It doesn't make sense for the miners to mine more ore than there is rooom for and waste the rest. It should only mine just enough to fill up the cargo hold and no more.

I admire your laziness here, really. 
A miner just mines, at maximum capacity, at maximum speed, just accept the loss or better time your shutdown.

Lazy? Did you just read the topid or did even read my post Asharia?
I normally dump my hold before it fills up completely but nobody's prefect.
All I'm saying is extra ore shouldn't be mined and wasted when there isn't room cor it.

I beg to differ, that character from "The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy", Ford Prefect, was Prefect.
Also, a line of Ford automobiles are called Ford Prefect.
