I was wondering if people thought a BC or AF would be faster for doing level 3 missions (specifically Wolf vs Cyclone). By "fastest" I mean in terms of making good isk/hour; not just completing the missions quickly. The BC would obviously kill faster but the AF moves faster (assume I don't have a helper to fly around and loot for me). I'm going to want all the skills for both eventually (well except the actual Battlecruiser skill) so I'm trying to decide which one to switch to next.

Choose the vessel that completes the mission faster. That _is_ the only relevant factor.
*assuming you can complete them all without risk of losing your ship*

No it's not. You can complete missions very fast in an AF, but at the expense of bounties and picking up loot, for example.

assuming you actually want the loot(I like free mins), no loot theives, and close to your base complete the mission in whatever is fastest(I like my AF) bookmark a can(or a can from each stage) warp out with as much loot as you can cram in the ship complete mission warp back in a nanofiber indy/cruiser loot

What makes a HAC or BC so much better than a battleship for these missions? It seems like a battleship would be able to fit more firepower and be able to hack through the missions faster.

You'd end up spending more time targetting things with a battleship than actually shooting anything. They are above and beyond overkill for level 3's. Also, just because you can destoy things faster doesn't mean you can get through it any faster. There are some exceptions, but battleships in general are slow. Battlecruisers get a boost over cruisers in tanking and firepower, but they get saddled with lovely battleship like speed.
Assault frigates nip through level 3's quicker than most people give them credit for.

depending on the mission, I blow thru with my enyo faster than my domi, even with the army of heavy drones suplimenting my firepower(and randomly killing things)

Retribution is pretty quick at doing missions also and tanks really well... but the optimal has to be a HAC. More firepower -> better tank and quicker than a BC.

It very much depends on the mission. While my harpy is faster my ferox has better firepower and longer range. I only use the Harpy these days even if some missions would be faster in the ferox, much more fun in the harpy.
If the mission does not require you to kill everything an AF is without a doubt the best.
A good example is the spystash mission where you can just run thru the first part in full speed to the gate and at the second part just kill the ships ignoring the turrets. If you do it like that you can finish that 1500-2000 lp mission in less than 10 min. While if you use a BC (or even worse a BS) it might take 1h+.

i'm gonna put another vote in for having a speed indy for looting with. that takes the long looting time out of the equation.
next things is do u fight in close or at range? if ure close combat then an af is easier to tank (assuming u have the right af for the rats ure facing, if not then ure just an expensive frigit).
if ure at range then a BC has much better sniping potentual. my brutix is a blaster boat, and the tank is good but not invincible. i either run her into the groud or out of the fight (normaly taker her up to cap death, by then the rats are dead. but i did do a spot of hull tanking the other day when i just didnt have enough cap for the spawn . others may want to warp in and out like most sane people do).
my blaster (and pulse laser, armarr af vs angels is a match made in heaven ) af's on the other hand barely get scratched. i dont need to run my tank 24/7 to keep up with the damage.
so, af's + indy for close combat styles and bc + indy for long range styles. of course you can take a bc in close, and its damn good fun. but if u just want to pump missions then the close af is easier Because sometimes you just have to go back to your roots: [2005.02.20 01:08:03] (combat) Your Civilian Light Electron Blaster perfectly strikes Serpentis Smuggler, wrecking for 20.3 damage. |

Edited by: Testy Mctest on 27/10/2005 12:46:18 if you really want to make good ISK per hour, here's the best tip you'll get:
ignore the loot cans.
Even in a fast ship, be it a frigate, coming back in a nano indy, or whatever, you will take as long looting as you do to complete the missions. Completing an average level 3 mission will earn you about 2 million in bounties and reward, looting will earn you a fraction of that and take an awful long time.
And as for doing missions fastest, definitely an AF. You cant mount large guns on a BShip for doing these missions effectively anyway, mediums are the best you can fit and hit well with, so you're not gettign a good trade for your super slow BS. And atm, a BC is just a BS with less grid/cpu/shields etc, that can only mount med guns, so it's almost as bad.
So to sum up: fly an AF. only pick up loot that happens to be right near you when you finish a group of mobs, or on the way to your next group. Do lots of missions and make a fortune. _______________________________

sometimes ignoring the cans isn't an option
i'm based in solitude region, depending what I need(drones, ammo, etc) I have to make trips up into the range of 15 jumps(something around 35-40 to Yulai) where as with the BPO's / BPC's owned by either my corp or myself, we can mostly be self sufficent
collect cans, reprocess crap, build whatevers needed and NO I am NOT moving back to empire

Domi is the best, warp in, go for a cuppa while the drones kill everything then go collect the loot in a fast frig with a good cargo bay (something like a probe with an AB and a couple of nanos)

Although chaining missions for the bounty only is a sound strat for making money off the agent. I enjoy picking up the cans after all the carnage has settled and its only me left. Its like x-mas, you never know when that 25mil expander will show up. Also blow up them storage sheds and what not, implants are good mmmkay. Also looting gets you alot of O.K. loot that can be used on your ships or sold for 500k-2mil on the market. Specialy named turrets and launchers, they drop a bunch. Patients is rewarded.

just trying out an enyo on some and it is really excellent - maybe not as quick as a loaded Domi but really good fun, only problem is that the screen shakes so violently with the explosions on my armour that it makes it difficult to select a ship!

IMO BS is best. Curently using an Arma fited w/ mega pulse and can manage all targets faster than any cruiser (including HAS). Mainly because I can target up to 6 targets at 80km. Most of the time I pull 2nd group wile I finish 1st one. For looting I use a full nano Sigil and BMs.

Edited by: Brep on 02/11/2005 02:09:08 BS - slow and boring, forget the loot.
BC - sig radius way too large, you take hits from EVERYTHING. Also too damn slow. 5 hours of *****-footing around to complete angels extrav - no thanks!
AF - my enyo is heaps better than a brutix or mega for lvl 3, I have no doubt about that!
The enyo can rip through missions damn fast, and I have never lost a ship (yes, I lost several BCs thanks to it's haneously slow to-warp speed).
Oh and not to mention the AF is funnnnn :D Orbitting rats and resisting so much damage is just cheeky! If that weren't enough, with my skills I am getting awesome damage out of it. 4x150mm T2 results in over 100 dmg for excellents. Running out of cap isn't as critical as it is in BC/BS thanks to the AF's quick warping. Mind you, I rarely need to warp out anyway.

Use an AF on smaller missions. Use a BC or a HAC on the larger longer ones. _______________________________________________ "Is it me or the bad guys just getting totally pathetic?"---Clover, Totally Spies, "Hope is wasted on the Hopeless."---Mandy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. If compare BC vs BS for lvl3 missions I would say that BS better for many reasons BS tanks better, so you won't run in any troubles even if you don't have good skills BS is slower. Right. But it can fit large beams with a very good range. So basically you can just stand still and wipe out the whole deadspace area without moving a single km. I am even thinking about removing an AB from my apoc configuration as I rarely need it. Yes, megabeams cann't hit an orbiting cruiser, but not many of them manage to orbit my apoc before been destroyed while approaching and there are 6 heave drones that can deal with luckiest ones easiely. About timing. It is take around 1h15m to finish Angel Extravaganza in BS. It is definatly better then my prev results with Prophecy. However, I've heard that AF can do it in 40m, that's why I'm training for them now ;)

People who pick up all thier cans everytime will mkae far far more isk per our than people who dont.
Granted, sometimes you will spend 25 mins picking mostly basic unnamed stuff - but its the occasional good item you get that makes up for it.
Most level 3s I have done frop a can worth at least 500 - 750k. I have items worth as much as 20M from loot. So if you do 20 missions at an hour each - 1 drop like that means an extra 1m isk / hour, even after doing 20 misisons. Which is a lot.
For picking up loot i recommend using a frigate like a probe, imicus etc. Stack it with cargo mods and you can get like 400 m3+ , and then add a mwd and an after burner and you have a perfect ship for picking up cargo cans super fast after you have done the mission in a BS or BC.
