If I understand correctly, all current gravimetric sites will become cosmic anomalies called "Ore Sites" when Odyssey arrives.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but won't this make ore sites in w-space even more pointless than they already are? Currently, their ISK/hour is about the same you'd get in a decent nullsec system, and you can't rely on local as an advance warning to get ready to PvP, so you have to be constantly spamming d-scan to detect probes. If they turn them into anomalies, then the advance warning you get due to someone having to scan down your site (or your ship) is gone, no? They can just fly around with a cov ops and pinpoint your location without you having any remote idea that you need to get out of your mining ships and into combat ones.
I really hope I'm wrong, because I like to occasionally mine in order to replenish ammo and other consumables, but if the new ore sites are going to be glorified deathtraps, I might as well import everything. |

You forget that the new overlay makes it a lot easier to see new incoming wormholes. You can see new signatures without probes. |

Fair point, but won't the automatic signature detection still be limited by the scanner's 14 AU range? Most systems are considerably larger than that, which opens up the possibility of a wormhole opening up outside my mining ship's range. |

No. The range of the on-board scanner is infinite (256 au or so but for almost every system in the game, it's perfect). |

Well, that's good news, then.
But still, it forces me to collapse all active wormholes and immediately stop everything as soon as a new signature pops up. It's a shame that I'll have to pick between mining and having visitors in my system. |

Right now, the overlay isn't instant. New signatures won't appear until you change your filters. So the new dscan smashing is flipping filter settings around. It may be a bug, or they might leave it that way, hard to say. Of course, you'll have to dscan smash as well.

Which is what most WH miners do already? Mining with open WH's is a bad idea regardless.
And mining has always been mostly pointless in WH's. The isk/hr sucks compared to almost any other activity. You can't get any efficient refine. And the only way you can get the ore out without totally losing your sanity is to invest huge isk in a rorq to compress it.
Personally I'm delighted. Its one more thing I can easily right click and ignore when roaming WH space for either an exit or targets.
And knowing most miners. They will still mine away. |

Crozo Yotosala wrote:You're never safe in Eve. Get used to it. I'm quite used to it. If I wasn't, I'd still be in high-sec flying ships that aren't worth suicide-ganking, not screwing around in w-space. My gripe with this change is that it arbitrarily makes players in gravimetric sites a whole lot more vulnerable than other sites for no apparent reason, other than making ore sites easier to find. And while easy-to-scan ore sites must sound great for high-sec dwellers, in w-space it does nothing but add a significant security risk for a reward that was already bad and underused.
Derath Ellecon wrote:Which is what most WH miners do already? Mining with open WH's is a bad idea regardless. If mining is the only thing you want to be doing, then it's a bad idea, sure.
But if you're mining to pass the time and would welcome visitors to your system (with a hail of bullets ) then closing wormholes is awful as far as potential pewpewing goes. I really like the current system because there is some effort involved in finding someone in a gravimetric belt, which offers the miner a bit of time to get in a proper combat ship, provided they're willing to spam the d-scan for potential threats. But with Odyssey, it seems I'll have to make a binary choice of either sitting around being bored until players stroll in (PvP), or destroying all wormholes so I can mine without the risk of an undetectable ambush (PvE).Something that used to combine the best of both worlds will now be fragmented into two that ensure a lot of boredom. Feels like CCP just wants us to completely ignore ore in w-space and just import everything. |

Yes it is. I don't feel like going back through the threadnaught, but the devs in there had confirmed the discovery scanner is essentially infinite range, ie scans an entire system regardless of size. |

Miners shouldn't complain, site runners already have the same thing with the normal sites now. In oddesy only the mags, radars, and gas sites need to be scanned. Maybe the thing to tweak is rather the time between scans when the autoscan runs. Since it doesn't require any effort it should be set to a longer time, unless you press the scan button manualy. |

normal on-board and scanner overlay are 2 different things, and it might have been a typo in that quote. The on board is 64au, the scanner overlay is going to be a built in deep space probe, with the range of it.
My 2 cents is currently, if you get ganked while mining, you're an idiot, or have some really bad luck. With this new scanner overlay, only idiots or those with bad luck will still get caught in belts. No difference there :D.
However (i havent set up the new sisi) i don't remember if the scanner overlay gives you a list of new sigs, if it only shows them in space then your gonna have to move that camera around :P. |

Today: You can use Deep Space Probe to check new signatures (Like WHs) and let's say that you hit scan button every 30 seconds. To somebody jump into the WH launch probes and scan you into Gravimetric site, let's say more 30 seconds. This way you can escape with your mining barges if you paying attention.
Odyssey: Overlay show the new signature to you, but if you miss the "bip" because people are speaking on TeamSpeak or you cant see the new signature on your screen because you are looking for some your dozens of windows. Some seconds later covert ops ship is over you and bye-bye mining barge.
The question is: How much time do a "Arazu" need to point your mining barge since new signature flares?
I'm not a fan when you have just seconds to save your mining barge, even if you are paying attention. Maybe CCP want that you have military ships (like Falcon) there to protect you, but I dont like it. |

Rek Seven wrote:@ CCP, is there a delay in time between a new signature spawning and the "discovery scanner" detecting the new signature?
If not i would suggest that you add one. Add a 5 minute delay between a new signature (i.e. a wormhole) spawning and the discovery scanner being able to detect it... but for pilots that are using probes and actively pressing the scan button, reward their efforts by having no delay between probe scanning and new signature detection.

Last i checked (yesterday) new sigs only show up if you change your filter back and forth to reload the list. I've asked 3 or 4 times in the feedback thread if that's a bug or intentional, with no response yet. The new sigs also take 30 seconds or so to show up in the space view. The devs keep calling it instant, but it has been anything but instant in my tests.

Thank you guys so much for taking the time to respond to everyone's concerns here. I am glad that we are on the same page in regards to the overlay and the fact that new signatures showing up instantly will adversely affect WH life. I think there's a few suggestions that CCP could easily code in to fix the problem.
1. Disable the "auto-repeat" function of the Discovery Scanner and put in a 10-30 minute delay or session change before it can be used again. This seems to be the easiest option. What purpose does an auto-repeating Discovery Scanner have anyway?
2. Only show a full list of signatures (including new WHs) upon a session change. The purpose of the Discovery Scanner was to show people what was available to explore, not to be a real time intel tool. Having new signatures/anomalies update only on a session change achieves CCP's objectives and addresses our concerns as well. This however would require DSPs to remain in the game so if that is not possible then this suggestion may not be as viable.

The instant intel from the DS is the replacement for the gankers no longer needing to put out probes to find the grav site. Removing the possibility for the miner to GTFO when they see trouble coming will kill mining in lower-class WHs--thus reducing the number of targets you have available.
Honestly, it's balanced right now.
Tranquility server: Gankers have to put out probes to find the miner, miner can see probes on dscan. Odyssey patch: Gankers don't have to put out probes to find the miner, miner can see new sigs on overlay.
It's already a bigger buff to the gankers, since the time it takes to find a miner has been sped up greatly. It's also a win for the gankers if you find an already-open hole. |

This is a much bigger issue than ganking miners. Cap escalation fleets, t3s doing sites, industrials doing PI. The list goes on and on. I am honestly confused how any WH resident could call this "balanced" now. |

It is an issue. Although I am curious on a sidenote about Cap escalation fleets. I haven't yet had the priviledge of playing at the varsity level, but I don't understand the difficulty catching a cap escalation fleet. When the dreads on field siege aren't they stuck? so essentially depending on the timing the fleet is stuck there for 5 minutes if a new sig spawns, unless they wanted to leave the sieged caps behind?
Seems very much like some C4 sites, where the sleeper BS can keep you pointed for a period of time, so if we were to get visitors its either stay and fight or leave the pointed guy behind to die. |

While I fully agree the new overlay shouldn't give players intel on a silver platter, everyone seems to have conveniently ignored that these changes completely ruin any logical reason to mine ore in w-space. The fix is easy, too, just convert only the k-space gravimetrics into anomalies, and leave the w-space ones as signatures. Because let's be realistic here, if you're in w-space and don't have probes to find a grav belt, you have way bigger problems anyway. |

also, a lot of people dont keep probes out when running sites. myself included cos, well, im lazy like that ;) |

Not wanting instant and free intel is not equal to wanting easy living, on the contrary. We like having to work for our intel, unlike the sheep in null. |

You reference this one point of change but it's the same with any suggestion of change in wormhole life.
I think it has become pretty stale now compared to the day the first wormholes opened. Please give us back the the excitement of Apocrypha where everything was new and no one has a guaranteed, safe place.

If you'd bother to look up some of my posts, I've previously suggested that wormholes would be scannable on both sides when they spawn, regardless of whether they are warped to or not, addition of more random holes such as a semi-static hole where the static bit would be that one would always spawn when the other one closes, but the randomized bit would be the actual space it spawns to, as in no more knowing that I live in a C5 with C5 static, the other randomized static could lead anywhere. More guaranteed connections to every system would lead into more player interaction and as such more pew for everyone. Not being able to easily turtle up your system for farming by crashing your statics and not scanning the new one would also make things more dangerous again, even if this could be overcome by a simple change of starting to crit the holes instead.
In short, I'm all for making things more difficult and exciting, rather than introducing even more mechanics to make things even safer for everyone. |

I also think CCP should change things that affect the top alliances as well as the new settlers. Use more bar graphs instead of cut and pasteable numbers to lessen the advantage of OOG tools. Monitor the tears in this forum to see what upsets the big alliances the most - they are the changes we all need!
Elite scanning carebearism has had its day. Let's have some change, any kind of change, all kind of change.

It'd only make it harder if people start paying attention like they should, it'd make it easier to catch the people who don't do that. |

That's just bs. Mapping tools are not elite and there are plenty of freely available mappers that any scrubs can use, including the mapping tool that my alliance uses. Complaining about that is one of the stupidest things possible. |

Not the tools, the number of people who have proudly expressed all their scanning skill levels in their fight to keep DSP and the little numbers for scan strength and, with the CSM's help, prevent anyone else having a more friendly visual scanner.
Again, CCP, please shake up the whole wormhole game and give us some challenges to overcome again. Introduce all you have suggested and even some you haven't mentioned yet! Sure there'll be some rebalancing and lots of tears, but there'll also hopefully be more game and less sheepish following of all the WH guides that are now totally established and therefore stale.
The best years of Apocrypha, in my opinion of course, were when we were all trying to work out what was going on. I think we all know all the maths and game styles now, it's too much like nullsec in that sense. If WH people can't adapt, maybe freeze WH space as it is and introduce a new kind of space for, what shall we call them, explorers? You know what, CCP, maybe this new space should be engineered to make permanent residence even harder still.

Ah that, personally I couldn't care less about DSP's, they're mostly a tool for the null and low sec explorers who have a very narrow scope of what they want. Stuff that would interest wormholers fall into so many bandwidth ranges that it's simply not even convenient way of doing things. Besides, if you're using a proper mapping tool and listing the signatures there like you should (to ease spotting brand new signatures for example), you want to list each and every signature there with at least the signature type in your mapper if not the exact site type.
While some people might feel different about the use of DSP's, I'd be inclined to believe that you're really preaching to the wrong choir with your claims of us not being able to adapt. And no matter what precautions CCP uses to prevent permanent residence, if it is profitable to do so or if the people find other things they wish to find there (pvp for example), people will find a way to live in such space even if it meant living out of an orca or a carrier. or even just cans. |

The whole notion of moving Grav sites to anoms is stupid. I've yet to see a cogent explanation from CCP as to why this is a good idea other than to make it easier for new players to find. That explanation doesn't seem to fit with the all the changes to scanning that will make it very easy to scan down sigs.
The change makes WH mining a lost cause. Having the instant intel about new sigs popping up without putting out a probe only increases the miners security if they were able to successfully close all the WHs in a system before mining. That is a huge pain for a wh crew, as it locks your buddies in or out during the mining operations.
It kills wh mining, but makes running anom sites much easier as it means you don't have to have a toon fit with a probe launcher spamming the DSP (oh yeah, they are removing those as well), the combat probe looking for new sigs to pop up.
Seriously, what does CCP have against folks that mine in WHs?

Site runners are in ships with weapons. Miners are in ships with mining layers. Huge difference. I run sites in a wh and am fine with the risks. We work hard to mitigate the risks of working anoms because we are easy to locate. Plus unlike the null ears, we have no local to warn of others in the system. I'm not complaining about that as that is what wh life is all about. However, mining is a different story. It already is risky and putting the rocks in an anom just makes it untenable.
