Any value in using drones in PvE or PVP play?
It seems like one on one combat evolves so quickly that Im questioning whether or not I would even have enough time to deploy drones where they would be effective.
and a total noob question here. Are scout drones just a lighter version of heavier attack drones?

yes scout drones = light drones, and any drones can either give u an edge or let u not have to worry about fitting to take smaller ships

Scout drones are designed to track and engage small fast interceptors. Mediums are designed to engage small fast cruisers. Heavy drones are designed to engage big slow moving battleships/cruisers/battlecruisers.
Now before any of these new players throw you off. Scouts are useful. They don't do a lot of damage single handed. They do great damage in groups. Now with the tech II's out, they do more. Drones used for frigate defense either NPC or PvP. One thing you got to factor in when using drones is speed. Unlike the first poster who obviously has no clue what she is talking about is that Heavy drones have very slow speeds. If you use heavy drones in Pvp then you sacrifice your drones to being usless. They just can't move 2000-3000m/s if a frigate is orbiting you at 15-20km and warp disrupting you.
I must have said this a million times today too heh. Heavies are not totaly useless. They do good damage but suffer in speed. Which isn't that hard to overcome if a frigate for example is out of web range (Mod to decrease speed at 0-10KM). The combo most used today with more bigger sluggish drones is "Heavy NoS (21KM Range) with Heavy Drones". The idea is to cripple the cap of a frig so they can't use Eletronic Warfare as well microwarp drive the next cycle. Which will reduce there speed to stock which is around 300-600+ m/s. Thats more than enough decrease for a heavy drone that moves 800-1200m/s to catch and beat down.
The reason speeds of drones is vital is for the fact they do follow the target and they can only hit the target if in range. Ranges on the drones are from 3000-5000km. If they're not in range then they suffer the same misses as we do with guns. Which renders slow drones vs high speed ships useless.
NPC wise, if you're not fighting NPC Interceptors or Rouge drones. Then heavies are fine. They will rip any frig down moving 800m/s and below. Even ones going 1000's. But if you're faced with something out of web range that's moving 2000-3000m/s and you have no way of stopping there speeds or reducing it more. Then medium to light drones are the best defense. They have speeds up to 5000m/s.

Light drone damage is still next to useless, so I disagree with the above poster tellin you to ignore these 'new' players telling you as much. And, since you're asking this question, I'll assume you're a long way off tech 2 drones and not able to take advantage of them as the above poster said :P
On a very basic level, you only need to worry about two types of drones. Medium drones are for targets that are too fast for heavy drones to hit effectively, or catch. They are also useful for ships with smaller drone bays (for example, with the Gallente Vexor, you can potentially control 15 drones, but it's bay is only 150m3, meaning a maximum of 6 heavy drones, but allowing 15 medium drones to be carried).
Heavy drones have the best damage and *are* generally fast enough to for most things. They're great for NPCing with also, since very few NPCs go fast enough to cause them a worry. Their downside is that they are very large at 25m3 each. _______________________________

Well desipite the downing of my little scout drones damages. Damage is better than no damage. You get no damage if you use heavies without nos support in pvp. Some drones that can come close and have better chances if you can't cripple 2000+m/s are mediums like
Hammerhead Medium Drones - 1400m/s - 1680m/s Valkyrie Medium Drones - 2100m/s - 2520m/s (My recommendation) Vesp Medium Drones - 1600m/s - 1920m/s
Although these somtimes still wont be fast enough or close enough to hit. Really all depends on the speed of the ship and where the drones are in orbit.
2000 - 1400 = 600m/s
I like to use hammerheads and when I was tackled by Hanns on the test server with his crow. My hammerheads still couldn't hit his MWD in orbit around my ship. Sitting there laughing at me too. By the time it looked to of getting closer to the target. I was dead anyways.

What a load of crap - lol - so if you had 5 lights doing 0.1 damage each thats better - lol
Plax just have a go m8 and you can update this with your findings.

Lights don't do 0.1 unless you have no skills at all. They have around 25-40DPS where Mediums have around 40-70 DPS so on.
Heavies wont be fast enough with drone navigation skills end of story. You need extra support like NoS or Web to kill speeds of the MWD frig.
Mediums and Lights are the only way. With good skills mediums is all you need. Lights shouldn't be overlooked though. Lights can chase where mediums will struggle. There is more to combat than a orbit. Frigs to flee from drones all the time. Where DPS is lost chasing, lights make up in being on there ass till out of range.
